actually you know in the cinematic where you see chamber’s glasses on viper’s bedside table
do you think she just held that close to her at night as a source of comfort do you think she outlines the frame with her thumb to commit the edges to memory because thats the only tangible thing she has left of him do you think do you think she doesn’t let herself cry because it was only supposed to be a fling and yet her jaw is tight every time she looks at him in thar hospital bed
So, Riot, you're telling me that Sabine Callas, who codenamed herself as "Viper", has a suit inspired by snakes, makes references to them in her personal armory, study their poison in her lab, and definetely doesn't have money problems, only has ONE pet snake??
No no no no no! Mama Viper surely is a cat lady but, like, for snakes, of course! She totally can't see a single snake without immediately going like "New baby!!"
Jokes asides, I'm a huge snake fan too. They're astonishing and smart creatures. If it weren't so hard to get a snake in my country (legally) I would totally have one as a pet. So, consider this post not only a compilation of Viper headcanons, but also a snake apreciation post. A lot of people fear snakes, but many of them aren't venomous and hardly attack humans. Just be chill and appreciate their unique nature!
That being said, let me present to you all of Viper's ten snakes!
10° - Mrs. Grinch/Doe
Ya know this one right?
The snake that Viper keeps in her lab in Seattle is a female White-lipped Pit Viper (yeah, I'm almost sure about it). She keeps Viper company when she's back home working. But, she doesn't spend much time in her hometown or in her personal lab. Before, it was because of constant travels around the world to check Kingdom's experiments. Now, it's because of the Protocol. She didn't have much time to know this snake, so, Viper generally call her as Doe. Like, Jane Doe.
However, who usually takes care of this snake is Viper's niece, Olive. She really like this pet, even if she can't handle her freely, because of her venon. Olive named Doe as Mrs. Grinch, which is a much more interesting name than Doe. Viper, by other hand, refuse to call the snake as "Mrs. Grinch".
9° - Curie
Now, things get more interesting
This snake is one of the snakes that Viper keeps in her lab in the Valorant's HQ. It appears in Chapter IV of "A Fall for You", my Chiper fic (what? Don't judge me. I must sell my fish - or should I say snake?). She is a peculiar female Boomslang. Her peculiarities start with her color. Female Boomslangs are usually brown, but Curie is one of the few that are green.
On other layer, she is a radianite affected animal. Now, I must explain something. She isn't a radiovore. Radiovores are cratures who probably came from another dimension and envolved with radianite. Mosh, Dizzy, Wingman, Thrash and the bear who ripped Deadlock's arm off came from a portal that Kingdom opened to other dimension besides Earth Omega.
Radianite affected animals works like radianite affected humans. Phoenix, Jett, Reyna, etc., weren't born radiants, they became radiants with the First Light event. In the same way, Curie and Viper's other snakes are animals that were affected by radianite and developed mutations because of it. Got it?
Back to Curie. Boomslang venon is already scary in its normal form. It causes bleeding from the ears, nose and eyes. Very painful. Now, Curie’s radianite-affected venom causes her victims to bleed through their pores. Every. Single. One.
Viper discovered that a normal Boomslang antivenon works to stop this terrible sensation. However, in her tests, she realized that, even the main symphtons stop with the antivenon, there are side effects, such as diseases and mutations in her victms. Similar to radiation effects.
That's why she's named after the mother of radioactivity scients! Marie Curie!
Also, Viper is studying the possibility of radiance (? idk how to conjugue radianite) being transmitted this way. Imagine, discovering that someone can gain radiant powers because of a snake bite! It would give her an amazing prize!
That's why a valuable snake as Curie must be kept close to her mother owner. It would be such a shame if someone else discovered this about the snakes, right?
8° - Lilith
Lilith here is a rare leucistic King Cobra. King Cobras are the biggest venomous snakes in the world, with such a large amount of venon that it's capable of killing even an elephant! On the other hand, leucistic snakes have inspired many stories around the world. One of the most famous is the "Legend of the White Snake" from the Chinese folklore. In short, a guy falls in love with a demon girl but some dumbass dude say "that's wrong" and try to kill them. The legend varies a lot but, it's basically this.
Viper is pretty aware about this legend and cosidered named Lilith as Bai Suzhen (白素貞). But Lilith is also a radianite affected snake. Her mutation didn't change her in therms of powers but made her very, very, very angry. All time, 24/7. In the legend, Bai Suzhen is a cute demon that warms (almost) anyone. This snake is dangerous, unstable and totally mad. Viper named her because of other popular female demon, Lilith.
And, as such a rare snake affected by radianite simply couldn't be away from Viper! No one has the resources or the touch to properly take care of this snake as her! And it has nothing to do with the fact that Viper loves her strong personality.
7° - Cyanide
The fairest of them all
This pretty girl here is an Indonesian Pit Viper. Her astonishing blue color gave her her name, Cyanide. In chemistry, cyanide (from Greek kyanos, "dark blue") is an inorganic chemical compound that contains a C≡N functional group. This group, known as the cyano group, consists of a carbon atom triple-bonded to a nitrogen atom. (thank you, Wikipedia)
Althought cyanide anion is extremely toxic, Cyanide has a nerfed venon because of her radiant mutation. For some reason, the typical poison of her species was smoothed out when she became a radiant animal. But that doesn’t make her any less dangerous. She developed another mutation that allows her to hypnotize almost anything that can see her. She just makes her preys mesmerized by her beauty and then NHAC!
The only way to avoid her power is with special glasses. Fortunately, Viper discovered this before she became snake dinner and created a special terrarium for this girl. Also, Viper is studying the possibility to use her venon as a cure for Lucia's (Reyna's sister) disease. That's why she keeps her close. Not because she is beautiful.
(No, Olive don't know about the existence of Cyanide. Otherwise, she would name her Gary)
6° - Mustard
She's so silly, I love it
This is an Eyelash Viper, named after the eyelash-like scales above its eyes. She is another radianite affected snake and her venom has effects similar to Mustard gas. You know, burning skin, hemorrhages and nausea. That's why Viper named her as Mustard. And not because she was looking foward to a red snake to name as Ketchup. Mustard is able to shapeshift. She can turn herself into other snakes and objects. But shhhhhh, Viper doesn't know this yet.
Also, Mustard and Viper have a sweet story together. Some time after the First Light, Mustard shapeshifted into a banana. Eyelash Vipers often hide among bananas but, of course, this show off would turn herself into a banana. But then, she got exported to the USA in this form until she ended in Viper's college lab. The interns freaked out when discovered there was a sna(c)ke (*ba dum tass*) in their food. Viper had the happiest day of that year.
She keeps Mustard... Well, because she was a snake who needed her. And Viper takes responsibility for her.
5° - Chrysolite
You know that Viper has a weak spot for green, right?
Chrysolite is a Green Tree Python. A shy, non-venomous species. She's pretty sweet, likes to be on her own, happy in her tree branches. And, as most of GTP, she's too delicate to be handled. If she weren't a radianite affected snake, Viper wouldn't have any other excuse to keep her beyond the fact that she's pretty. She's named after a green gemstone that, althought not famous as Jade or Emerald, is equally beautiful.
Oh yeah, she can also turn invisible. Viper doesn't know about it yet. She just thinks that Chrysolite is really good in disguising herself in her terrarium. Seems like Chrysolite is very good at keeping her own secrets, right?
4° - Black Hole
Oh yeah, another famous one
This smiling boy here is Black Hole, a Black Mamba. Viper acquired him with three other snakes, which she affectionately calls her "Trinity".
Black Hole is also a radianite affected snake, which makes him much hungrier than a normal snake. He must eat like, three or four times a week, which, for a snake, its a LOT. That's why he is named Black Hole, an endless eater.
Black Mamba venom is already fatal (if you get bite you're gone within ten minutes if you don't receive antivenom). But, you don't want to know what this angry boy can do with his radianite-enhanced venom. Viper always make sure to keep him fed and happy. And, like, who else could take care of this dangerous species if not her?
Fun Fact! Did you noticed that Black Hole isn't, well, black? That’s because black mambas get their name from the inside of their mouths, which are black and opened as a threatening warning. Pretty cool right?
3° - Black Jack
Ok, now we're getting out of excuses
Here we have a Mexican Black Kingsnake, Black Jack. He came to Viper with Black Hole and thinks he can eat his mate. He can't. Viper just pick him up because he's pretty and she admits it.
Like, snakes aren't acessories, but look at how gorgeous this boy is. And it's not Viper's fault that he's always so chill and loves taking pictures with her and being handled by her. He's one of the few snakes Viper can handle freely and they both love to be together. Viper sometimes let him hang around her arms and neck while she's working. And they like making other people terrified when she walks around with a real snake.
2° - Jack Daniel
Dear Lord, he's so ADORABLE
Jack Daniel is named after the whiskey brand, because of his characteristic color. And to match with his siblings, Black Hole and Black Jack. He's a hognose snake specie, easily recognized by his upturned snout. This type of snake is also knew by its defense machanism, where it dramatically plays death when it feels threatened. (and they're really dramatic)
Jack Daniel is also a radianite affected snake. It changed his mood, making him feel more deadly tham he really is. At least, it's what Viper think. His venom seems normal and harmless to humans. But Viper never really lets him get into a real fight with other snakes and, who knows, he might win.
Also, she really likes Jack Daniel, too much for letting him get himself killed. She trained him so, when she makes a gun with her hand, he plays dead. It's hella cute. Oh, yes, and he's chill with her, so she can handle him without any problems.
1° - Caladium
Oh, a First Love
Caladium is a ball python. A common domestic python, know by its shy personality and its defense system, where the snake curls itself into a ball. It hardly presents danger to humans. Equally, Caladium is the name of a popular house plant, which is poisonous if ever ingested.
This Caladium isn't venomous, and isn't even affected by radianite. It's a simple and normal snake who Viper, or rather, Sabine, loves deeply.
Sabine always wanted a pet but her parents never let her have one. Not even a hamster, much less gekkos, tarantulas, or, for God's sake, snakes.
When she finally moved out for college, one of the first things she did was buy herself a snake. She had no experience at all, so she starts with something easy and simple. Ball pythons don't really need as much care as a dog or a cat. What could go wrong?
Well, everything. Sabine didn't get her enclousure right, had trouble finding her a decent food and couldn't handle her properly. They had a hard time together.
But they also grew together. Caladium kept Sabine company while she was crazy about her grades, has breakdowns because of her finals and inspired her to develop her thesis about the use of snake's venom as a treatment for diseases. They learned to get along and how to love each other. Sabine keeps her close always because, well, Caladium is probably Sabine's best friend. And, of course, made her fell in love with snakes.
And that's all about Viper's snakes! Hope you like it and, if you have any more thoughts about it, tell me! I would love to hear them!
