3:13. Knocked 44 minutes off my LA Marathon time from 3 years ago. Thanks to @dawitty for inspiring me to get out and run. Huge thanks to @rebflaherty for being ok-ish with me getting back to my running 2 days after our new baby was born, for also being ok with me being gone for 581 training miles over 16 weeks. And also for being my amazing chef helping me drop 23lbs in the process. Thanks to my running community for the advice and Strava kudos over the last 4 months @tapalesramon @shovensko @russellbunim @sean_j_flaherty @tacplasma. And thanks to my wonderful friends and family for helping to push me beyond the wall on the course @torcoomes @naterhoades20 @andihenke @shwoopa. Cheers to the next race! Nearly three years ago with Rebecca 9 months pregnant was the last time i ran a Marathon. At the time my goal for the race was to train and complete the race without injury with a respectable time. I did all those things, but i really struggled at the end of the race, having to walk numerous times over the final five miles and feeling very defeated (emotionally and physically) at the end of the race. I wasn't sure i'd ever run another marathon and was leaning towards not.
But time heal all wounds they say.
Inspired by seeing my closest friend, David, crush the Seattle Marathon a few months back i decided to sign up for the LA Marathon this year with Rebecca's approval/support. The race was fortunately 16 weeks after the Seattle Marathon (Thanksgiving weekend), an ideal amount of training time for me. Leading up to watching David's result on Facebook i had a poor diet (eating pretty much whatever i wanted - 'tis the season), while still working out a few times a week. I've always been very very goal-oriented when it comes to fitness, so its just lazy on my part to not have a goal to work towards. And so here it was, the LA Marathon on March 18th.
Knowing the struggles from my past race, i setup a few tactics to help me have a more successful race. I put together a training schedule in a google doc and included these tactics along side the daily mileage program:
1. Lose weight to ease the burden on my body.
2. Train at a faster pace to shorten the amount of race time (decrease time on my feet)- after 3 hours running the body especially suffers.
3. Increase the hill/sprint training so that i could be be better equipped for the challenges of the race.
So far i'm on-track with my tactics and am hopefully setting myself up for a strong result during the race on March 18th. February has helped infuse energy into my eating habits so that i could get my diet together and i've been dropping additional weight while putting in 40-50 miles of running per week. Since Thanksgiving i've lost 17 pounds (8% of weight loss for those of you who watch The Biggest Loser) and also lost 5% body fat. I'm feeling great with good energy on my runs and feeling very motivated.
My hope is that after the LA Marathon i can continue on eating well and setting about 5 fitness goals/milestones for myself annually to help me be motivated.
Harry woke up to news of the Blake trade. Real life hyper pissed after napping in his Clippers shirt and diaper this afternoon. He has no idea who Blake is, but impeccable timing on wardrobe and waking up on the wrong side of the bed. Editors note: his Dad is also hyper pissed, end of an era. #GoClippers #cmonClippers (at Santa Monica, California)
“Listen Santa, everything’s negotiable and everything’s for sale”
Motivating video, but also a lil frustrating (read: hard to believe) to see someone who claims to not be a runner finish a half marathon in 1:37 after five weeks. A little suspect there, but still interesting nonetheless.
This song just popped on my Pandora station, definitely got my knee rocking. Going to be playing this on repeat for the next hour.
