How can you know where you are going if you don't know where you came from? Know your rOOTS.
"A white blood cells intelligence is so profound that it orchestrates its own death when it is no longer useful. Once it consumes the invading microbe, the macrophage dies, the victim of its own chemical weapons. Its suicide is voluntary and altruistic. A single white cell knows that the good of the individual and so it is that the cell makes the ultimate sacrifice in support of that understanding."
"I no longer know who I am and I feel like the ghost of a total stranger."
Every morning when I say what I did the night before, it sounds very similar to this montage haha
The scene I picked from Run Lola Run is a scene when Lola gets shot in the chest.
The first shot is a tracking medium shot of Lola and her apprentice running and then two cop cars show up. We know by the action that a crime has been committed. The next shot the camera is tracking backwards as Lola runs forward it seems that they making more distance and then it cuts to a closeup of them running. This was effective in showing space from the initial point they were at when intersecting with the police.
When the camera cuts to the closeup of the couple running the camera begins to track along the back of them bringing the viewer to the action. It is effective in showing the movement of the actors on the screen. As the camera continues to move with the actors we notice that they are up against the police and there is no where to go. The camera begins to circle rapidly around the actors it is effective in showing that there is no where to go and that they are screwed. The next shot after panning around the actors and speeding it up in editing is a medium close up of the police with their guns up. Lola's partner throws the bag of money in the air and the camera follows the action of the back and the next shot is a close up of the police officer blowing his gun and ultimately shooting Lola in the chest.
The editing leading up to this moment were effective because it made the viewer feel the panic. We knew that neither of them were going to get away with it after being corner on both sides. When the camera spun around the actors I felt the panic of the actors. When Lola is falling to her death she is the only thing in focus. The background is a blur and all we see is her colorful hair and pants. In a shot that is so sad it was also made very beautiful like a fallen angel. The last shot is a close up of her partner with the sky as her background. It gives the feeling of doom and that this is the last image that Lola will ever feel.
The scene I picked from "Slumdog Millionaire" is very youthful, the choice of music, shots and editing give this scene a feel good feeling. If you used a different soundtrack to these shots it would have changed the complete feel of the scene.
In the first shot we see two young Indian Boys, we can tell by their clothes that they are poor children. Directly after the closeup of the boys, we cut to a medium close up and the next juxtaposing shot is the shot of train and we see the boys standing on top of the train. Initially the first shot did not give away where the two boys were.
The editing of the scenes are comprised of a lot of jump cuts to show the the boys journey but also being playful. We see the atmosphere of the train. The mise en scene confirms that we are in India.
Each shot goes from seeing the boys hustle and then will cut to a shot of the boys either sleeping or playing and then will cut to the train moving in a different terrine showing the time and distance that is passing throughout the scene. As the viewer we see the lives of two poor Indian boys and as I said before if the music was different the scene wouldn't be as playful as it is.
The editing of the scene was very effective. It showed time, distance, and a glimpse of the boys lives in a minute and a half. The constant transition between showing the boys at work on the train trying to survive to the moments where they having fun and then to them sleeping and the wide shots of the train running through different locations was effective. If it had been a continues shot it would not have had the same feel and it would have been drawn out. Many Bollywood movies have a very youthful feel and the cinematography is typically very beautiful so I think this editing and scene was a good representation of Bollywood movies.
another version!
Museum of the Moving Image
I finally made it back to the Museum of the Moving Image. The first time I went there a few months ago I was on a guided tour and this time around I got to actually really enjoy it on my own. The main thing that I took from each trip to the museum was just how planned everything in a film was. Every single detail on screen the house, the wardrobe, the lighting etc. was planned to create some type of emotion in the viewer. I also love the wall of actors photos. I learned from the tour guide the first time around that when photos of actors in the 20's-50's it was taken of the actor in the form of the characters that they played not of the actor was off stage. It reminded me of how different that is with todays celebrities. The image that they hold off camera sometimes layers over to the characters that they play because of the tabloids and their lives being exposed.
Another favorite part of the exhibit for me was the sound editing lab to Titanic. It really opens my eyes to how much sound effects and music can add to a scene. Without those sound effects and music in a scene, the scene would be less engaging and not have the same effect on the viewer.
It was also really amazing to see the different types of cameras on display. Today we have little handheld cameras that do not weigh that much and have fairly good quality to HD quality, but many many years ago it would have been near impossible for a woman to carry around one of those huge cameras to create a film which I think has a lot to do with why women became editors. Women also became editors because film was so intricate it was almost similar to sewing in a way. I really enjoyed going to the Museum of the Moving Image, It always blows my mind to see the wardrobes of cast, the memorabilia and inspires me to put every single inch and soul into what ever i create because every detail counts, nothing is ever by accident, well sometimes.
Food Truck Video Haiku
Blog Assignment
When I like things, I like them just because. Even with the knowledge to express a specific technical idea, I usually don’t feel any underlining meaning behind a song, a movie, a picture, or anything that touches my soul. I could listen to a song on repeat for days and I wouldn’t explain that it was the guitar rift or the lyrics that spoke to me; it just happens to spark a feeling in me and ignites my senses. After watching this typography video on the five senses, I found that what really pulls me in is the beauty behind the madness. The beauty in the production of people collaborating to create something, the beauty behind the madness of the actors and singers that make our words reality on screen, and to the beauty behind the writer who threw his feelings on a piece of paper and made them living in a sound or visually. I’ve often found myself in situations where I thought I was the only one living through it, the suffering of a broken heart to the happiness of eating ice cream in bed with the one you love. The fact is what you are feeling has been felt, what you did has been done and you are not alone.
The video that I found to talk about for my blog assignment was for the Typofile Film Festival. What I loved most about the video was that everything you see was created nothing was made with CG effects. The feeling I received after watching this video which is words was more powerful than if it was visuals of someone expresses these emotions.
Color: The color in the video is very expressive. The saturation is high in most parts of the video and it is very vivid. In the beginning when it talks about “If eyes are meant for seeing then beauty is its owns excuse for being.” All of the fonts are different but varying in white tones and black, but beauty is a completely different font and is the color red. This really put an emphasis on beauty for me when watching it. Many people would say that using too many fonts tends to be too cluttered, but I beg to differ in a situation like this scene it really got its point across. I like how they are turned the fonts in different position and changed the focus on them until the final reveal of the exact quote.
Proximity: The proximity of the letters was also very effective throughout the video. I felt that none of the letters were ever overlaying or spaced too much to be overwhelming.
Composition: The composition of the video overall works for me. The symmetry of the letters was always placed in a good focal point with the word of interest being the main focus. The texture of the entire video made it feel very alive to me. I could feel the letters frying in the pan; I felt I could feel the fur rug, and the jello. Especially in the scene with the plato going through the “spaghetti maker.” It brought me back to being a little girl playing with plato.
When I think of mail I think of time and distance. Before I moved to New York City, I heard a lot of bad things before I figured out the good things on my own.: "Oh my gosh the rats, the homeless people, the garbage, cockroaches, the murders etc. etc." I decided to exaggerate that theme in New York City for my stamp project.
Distorted Reality
One of the many things I love about New York City is that every wrong step I make ends up taking me to a better place, some place new. Surviving in New York City while continuing on a path to success has been a constant battle. When I arrive at school I am present in the flesh, but not in the mind. Highly caffeinated and lacking sleep from juggling too many things all in the hopes of for filling my goals and passions. Will walking these liquid halls guide me and help me to be who I want to be? Will the piece of paper I earn here be worth all the time and effort? Would I be better off slipping through the backdoor of my dreams? These pictures resemble the way I see Hunter. Between taking a lot of night classes and looking up trying to keep my eyes open to stumbling across moments in time and new places while on the search for another. Its a distorted reality
Another amazing photo-essay
The first time I saw Maisie Crows work was in an audio class. Maisie is an amazing photographer and she actually captures the reality. I have found most things today are a product of editing and over-acting. Reality television is not reality, but when I saw her projects I was shocked. She truly does everything I want to do. She is the fly on the wall. Her subjects in her short documentaries are who they are portrayed to be. They are comfortable around her to the point that the camera doesn't change anything happening. In my experience when a camera comes out everyone changes. It is no longer reality the moments turn into fiction. Please please check this is out.

For the photo essay project I picked a multi-media project that uses still photography, audio and poetry. When I first saw this project I fell in love with multi-media. It was so simple and yet so powerful. Troy, New York was one of the richest cities in the USA and now is below the poverty line. Most families in Troy live off of minimum wage jobs.
