Raglan Harbour, Waikato
Log: launched from Te Kopua beach and paddled for about an hour and a half inland to Okete Bay where there are two waterfalls accessible by kayak. Stopped there for a swim and lunch, then paddled back to Te Kopua.
Highlight: the waterfalls!
Rating: 6/10 would be higher but the to and from was a long slog. Next time I would start nearer Okete Bay.

Raglan Harbour, Waikato
Log: launched from Te Kopua beach and paddled across the harbour to the north side. Paddled inland, exploring the pancake rocks and limestone towers for about an hour, stopped for a swim then paddled back.
Highlight: paddling between the towers of layered limestone, and also paddling over large schools of small fish
Stingray count: 1 (probably)
Rating: 10/10 a really nice paddle with lots to see

Mairangi Bay, Auckland
Log: Launched from the boat ramp and paddled south to the north end of Kennedy beach before turning back to Campbell's Bay. Stopped for a swim and to eat lunch, then paddled back to Mairangi Bay.
Highlight: bobbing up and down on the gentle swells

Browns Bay, Auckland
Log: Paddled out from the northern boat ramp at Browns Bay, heading north around to Torbay and on to Winstones Cove. Stopped for a swim then paddled back to Browns Bay.
Highlight: crystal clear waters and sunshine!
Rating: 8/10 a classic and beautiful trip
Note: I'm officially at 26 paddles for 2024! While I'm not gonna get to my original goal, it does mean that I'm averaging a paddle every fortnight, which is really cool! I have a trip to Raglan coming up before xmas so fingers crossed I can make it to 30 :D

Log: launched from the northern boat ramp at Browns Bay, paddling north around to Torbay and on to Winstones Cove. Stopped for a swim then paddled back to Browns Bay.
Highlight: the sunlight on the crystal clear turquoise water
Rating: 8/10 a classic and beautiful little trip

Highlight: SAW A SHARK!! It must have been at least 1.5m long and swam directly under my boat!!!!

Martins Bay to Moturekareka Island, Auckland
Log: took off from Martins Bay boat ramp and paddled across 1.5km or so of incredibly calm water to Moturekareka Island and the wreck of the Rewa, a scuppered ship. Enjoyed an amazing paddle around the wreck!! The paddle back to the mainland was a lot more strenuous haha
Highlight: paddling INSIDE a wrecked ship and seeing the fish and rays swimming about the bones of the ship through the crystal clear water

Scotts Landing, Auckland
Log: Paddled out from the boat ramp by the wharf area, across the bay and around the island. The tide was low so I paddled around the other side and stopped for a snack on the far bank. Paddled back to the boat ramp across the bay.
Highlight: beautiful flat conditions in the bay

Log: Paddled out from the beach around 6pm, partway around the headlands to see the rocks.
Highlight: being back on the water after the winter!!

Lake Rotoiti and Ohau Channel, Rotorua
Log: launched from Ohau Wall boat ramp onto lake Rotoiti, paddling west into the Ohau channel. Paddled upstream to where the channel met lake Rotorua, then cruised back to the boat ramp.
Highlight: many beautiful and quite rare birds including royal spoonbills and a white heron! Also, the last paddle of my Rotorua trip :(
Rating: 7/10 a nice little paddle with some good upstream work

Log: Paddled a short way out into the lake to watch the sunset.
Highlight: the sunset was beautiful, and the moon also stole the show!

Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
Log: said goodbye to Hot Water Beach campsite and headed out across the open water to the peninsula. Hugged the coast around to the wide bay on the other side - decided not to try and cut across this side but kept in close to the shore instead. Stopped about an hour in at one of the beaches to stretch my legs before continuing back along the shore to The Landing (where my car was still safe and sound!).
Highlight: stunning views of the volcano, including the crater in its side.
Rating: 9/10 lovely vistas, beautiful weather

Hot Water Beach to out past Wairua Stream, Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
Log: An evenings paddle starting from Hot Water Beach and travelling west, out past Wairua Stream and exploring the coastline on the south side of the peninsula. Turned around before exiting the bay and stopped off at Wairua Stream for a starlit soak, then paddled back to camp by moonlight.
Highlight: the moonlight lighting up the clouds of steam coming off the lake. Indescribably beautiful. Also got to see a family of Miromiro on the lakeside!
Rating: 100/10 magical

Hot Water Beach to Rāpatu bay, Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
Log: headed east from Te Rātā bay along the coast to Rāpatu bay, hopped out and hiked the short Isthmus Track over the brow of the hill to Lake Rotomahana (couldn't bring the kayak unfortunately). Had lunch on the floating pontoon on the lake, then hiked and paddled back to the campsite.
Highlight: Lunch on Lake Rotomahana, bringing me to five lakes I've floated on in total on this trip!
Rating: 8/10 including the little hike.

Hot Water Beach to Wairua Stream (twice), Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
Log: Launched from Hot Water Beach campsite and paddled through hot (!) water from Te Rātā bay to Wairua Stream, which has been dammed to create a natural hot spring. Soaked in the hot water for a time, then paddled back. Did this the evening of the 21st and morning of the 22nd.
Highlight: Hot water! Not just at the hot springs, which were magical, but all the way along the route also. My legs were toasty warm in the boat! There were even some lakefront pools too, and I had a dip there as well. Magical, especially paddling through the thick clouds of steam!
Rating: 100/10 so cool!

Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
Log: Launched with all my camping gear from The Landing boat ramp on the west coast of the lake. Hugged the coast out of Kōtukutuku bay and then attempted to cut across from the opening of Hawaiki bay to Mourā bay, which turned out to be a struggle without my rudder! After a bit of a slog, finally turned the corner of the peninsula and into the southernmost section of the lake. Hugged the coast some more until I could see Hot Water Beach opposite, when I paddled across open water to the campsite there.
Highlight: setting up camp on Hot Water Beach - after ferrying all my gear for over 13km!
Rating: 9/10 tough but worth it!
