Iâm Colleen Burns, The Mom on the Run, with some Summer Survival Tips. I donât know about your family, but we have a lot more laundry in the summer, more costume changes I guess. So Iâve learned to stay on top of that, a little each day, so Iâm not stressed. I was talking laundry hacks at Grand Central Station a little while ago, and we had a yearâs worth of laundry from a typical family hanging from the ceilingâit was quite a site. Actor Colin Farrell stopped by to take it in, and get some tips, the kicker of course was with six kids, I have three times that amount in a year! Iâm always looking for ways to make doing laundry easier because my family generates so much, and now some new cutting edge appliances are letting me do laundry the way I want, when I want. Samsungâs new Flexwash + Flexdry laundry system is actually two washers in one and two dryers in one. So I can wash smaller items like swimwear on top, and heavy duty items like beach towels and blankets on the bottom. The dryer features a top load drying zone for delicates to lay flat and gently dry, and a full sized drum for larger loads like bedding. Summer is fun, but it can also be messy. Itâs easy to feel overwhelmed with toys and gear all over the house, dishes, sand, etc. Spending a little time each day tidying up means no big clean up later and your home is always presentable. When friends and family drop in the main focus is always the kitchen and bathroom. But now the most frequently visited room in the house can be the easiest to clean. The new Clorox toilet wand is preloaded with toilet bowl cleaner. You simply click a disposable refill head onto the wand, scrub away the germs, then toss in the trash. Just like that you can get rid of your old germy toilet brushâ there was never a good way to store those nasty things. And two tips for keeping the kitchen clean? Make sure your dishwasher is empty so helpful guests can pitch in, and have trash cans out and easy to find. When you have six boys, snacks are important. Picking up snacks on the road is usually more expensive and your choices are limited, so I like to pack a cooler with crackers, and hummus, cheese or peanut butter. I love Crunchmaster crackers because theyâre crunchy, glutenfree and perfect for Summerâs on the go lifestyle. The crackers are so crunchy because theyâre oven baked, but the best part is whatâs not in them. Theyâre made from whole grains and seeds and thatâs about it! As a mom, Iâm always looking for wholesome, well-balanced meals to serve my family. I love to cook, but summer nights can be over scheduled so my Plan B is always Boston Market. Their rotisserie chicken has always been a favorite and now there are the new Oven-Crisp Chicken Strips, made from all-white meat, seasoned and hand-breaded and then baked ( not fried! ) , so theyâre crispy but better for you. You can buy them by the stripâ I sometimes cut them up and top salads or pasta at homeâ or you can buy them in a meal with sides, a sandwich, a wrap or salad or kidsâs meal. Itâs also nice thatBoston Market partners with the Fisher House Foundationâ known for providing comfort homes for military families while a loved one is receiving medical treatment. You can help the cause July 4th, when Boston Market will donate up to 1,000 meals to Fisher House families for every oven-crisp chicken strip meal purchased . So you can eat well, and do some good at the same time. Hereâs to enjoying an organized and less hectic summer!

Family Vacation Travel Tips from the Mom on the Run
More than one third of us are planning to take a family vacation, this year. The idea of a vacation sounds wonderful, but the whole process can be stressful. How do you pick the perfect destination? And then the hotel, the restaurants and excursions. January 31st is National Plan for Vacation Day â and thatâs the perfect opportunity to plan ahead, so you can minimize stress and maximize family memories. Like anything, planning reduces stress. It can help you save money, and time, and make the actual trip more relaxing. I like to use the âflexible datesâ option when booking flights, then using a combination of Miles and no-frills seats, to save money. Home and apartment rentals instead of hotels are becoming much more popular in 2017. And, especially for me when my family includes growing boys, all-inclusive properties can make a lot of sense. Donât forget all-inclusives include cruises. Cruises also have the added benefit of built in excursion ideas, so you donât have to do all the homework.
Iâll be perfectly honest, my husband and I didnât think we were cruise people, and you know what? Itâs kind of perfect. Thereâs always something to see, great food, you get to see a lot of places instead of just one destination, and your kids, depending on their ages can hang out safely on different parts of the ship. And it can be so economical! Carnival Cruise Line for example is offering some of its best prices of the year, with more than 15 different deals through January 31st. Itâs part of their say YES to FUN, promotion, and who doesnât want to do that? I you can take a three day or a fifteen day cruise, or anything in between to places like the Caribbean, Mexico and the Bahamas. And you may not want to even get off the ship! Carnivalâs brand new Vista which sails from Miami offers an IMAX theater and its own brewery onboard. Thereâs also a unique experience called SkyRide, where you can pedal high above the ship and take in views like youâve never seen before.
You can get more info on some of the best prices of the year, and free upgrades at carnival.com
There are a number of free ways to get the most out of your vacation. Firstâ wake up early. You can pack more in your day, and the lines are shorter at tourist hot spots Pack lightâ save on baggage fees and skip the carousel. Wear your bulkiest clothes on the plane and roll instead of laying flat your bagged items
Talk to localsâ of all my travel memories, the ones that stick out the most are those created by getting to know local people and their culture. So educational and eye-opening! A local street party with food and music was absolutely the highlight of our trip to Turks and Caicos!
And a last tip, because colds seem to happen when everything else is working out. There is a way to get better faster - Cold-EEZE lozenges are clinically proven to shorten your cold by almost half. And now Cold-EEZE has introduced Multi-Symptom lozenges, and gummies. They shorten your cold PLUS provide relief for cold & flu symptoms, including cough, congestion and sore throat. I use these all the time, and honestly, if I use these lozenges or gummies at the very first sign of a cold, Iâm better within a day or two. Definitely worth packing, just in case!
Wherever your vacation plans take you, safe travels!

TRAVEL TIPS FROM THE MOM ON THE RUN ïżŒ As a mom of six who travels for business and pleasure, I've learned a few travel hacks. One is to book flights for travel before noon Thursdays, because even though we've entered the busiest travel time of the year, Airports are always busiest Monday mornings and Friday afternoons because of business travel. It's worth getting TSA PreCheck enrolled. A no-brainer if you're traveling alone, but if your children are under 13, you can bring them with you through the faster lane. Two of the main reasons kids can get cranky while traveling is that they're tired or hungry. Make sure they're well rested before your trip. And make sure you have smart snacks on hand in case travel delays interfere with meal times. I like to bring along popcorn mixed with dried cranberries, because it's low in fat and high in fiber, watch for sugar content, though. I also like to rent an apartment or house while traveling. A lot less expensive than multiple hotel rooms, and having a kitchen and family room keeps everyone together, plus cuts down on meal costs. Also, make sure the kids' hand held devices are charged and loaded with movies based in our travel city, or tourist apps like Sygic Travel. Smartphones can be so helpful while traveling. Making and changing reservations, reading reviews and using the GPS for directions. And now I've finally found a smartphone that takes such high quality video and photos, I no longer need to even bring along my bulky camera! LG's brand new V20 is the only phone with a wide angle lens on the front AND the back. That means I can fit even my giant family, or all the stockings above our fireplace in one selfie shot! Or take a shot of the entire front of the house or a beautiful lake shot without backing up. And this is the only phone with an anti vibration feature, so you won't see any bounce if you're walking and shooting video. Backup everything. Keep digital copies of your birth certificate, driver's license, passport, health insurance card and important phone numbers, in case your laptop or wallet is lost or stolen, while traveling. Backup the information on an external hard drive as well as online. I also carry with me sanitary wipes to wipe down airplane trays and clean hands while traveling but sometimes the inevitable happens. When you do get sick, the only thing you can do is cut down on the amount of time you're suffering. Cold-EEZE lozenges can actually cut down your cold symptoms by almost half, it's clinically proven, and it's why it's the first thing I grab when my family is sick. And new this season, multi symptom lozenges and gummies that cut in half the time you need to suffer thru cold and flu symptoms. Finally, in this season of giving, consider volunteering as part of your vacation. It's such a great lesson for your children, and may be the highlight of your trip! Volunteermatch.org can help you find a local need while you're available. #FAMILYTRAVELTIPS #themomontherun #5boysplusbonusboy #5boys #LGUS #coldeeze
