I was tagged!  Last line in my current WIP: 

Mac and Wallace look at him, at her and then roll their eyes as they look at each other.  Logan sees and takes heart.  Veronica is oblivious.

Her perfume lingers beneath the fig trees beside the courthouse where we held an impromptu picnic, plotting our European adventure that was never to be.  Her laughter lilts behind me as I snap photos at Shoreline Park, where we rollerbladed down the path, and Lilly hit on a brunette named Eva or Eveline who majored in marine biology.  I feel her presence as I slip inside a small restaurant near my motel and order a burger and fries, then add on a glass of wine.

Lilly deserves a toast, after all.

“Travelling alone?” my server asks.

“No,” I reply softly, refusing to explain. - From the final chapter of In The Cards

Six Sentence Sunday

The crowd cheered for a bit longer before finally dispersing and heading back home, leaving Logan Van Helsing alone and in quiet. He steps back into the inner sanctuary of the enormous house, pulling the door closed behind him and ensuring that it’s locked.

Before going any further, Logan locates a bar and pours himself a tall bourbon. Sitting in the still, silent room, sipping slowly and making sure no villagers try to enter. The manor may be old, but it’s not abandoned. The story in the village is that the owner is just away on another continent. In truth, the owner is upstairs, but before Logan goes to her, he wants to make sure nobody else will try to enter the house.

He sets his glass down and rubs the back of his neck. Becoming a so-called monster hunter had not been what he wanted to do with his life. Unfortunately, his family’s legacy made the choice for him. Now, he is the last of the Van Helsing line and ready for it to end with him, not wanting to subject anyone else to a fate they have no say in.

Once Logan is certain that the people have indeed left, he finishes his drink and makes his way up to the second floor. To the master bedchamber where the curtains are drawn to hide the glowing candlelight around the room. He glances around the room, taking in the opulence that befits the woman who resides here.

Logan knows he shouldn't even be surprised and yet for some reason he is.

"Should you even be here? Since, ya know, you're dead and all?" He asks, grabbing her arm and dragging her farther away from the crowd gathered to pay tribute to her.

"And miss out on this homage to the fabulousness that is me? Not hardly!"

"What if some one saw you? Jesus Christ, Lilly! What if Veronica saw you?"

"She has seen me a few times," Lilly shrugs. "She thinks I'm a ghost, it's no big."

“Okay. Guess who has two thumbs, a roommate who is headed out of town this weekend, and speaks limited French? This moi.”

Waggling her eyebrows, she points her thumbs at her chest and waits for him to leap at the opportunity to sleep over. Instead, he groans and holds his head in his hands.

“Wait, what’s wrong?” Veronica puts her hand on his bowed shoulder.

“Such wasted opportunity,” he moans. Lifting his head, his mouth turns down in genuine disappointment. “I’m supposed to go yachting with my parents.”

Are you a bounty hunter, boy?

“You didn’t go after either of them.  Not Solo or Skywalker.  They both had big bounties,” said V’ica

Logan shrugged.  “No point going after Skywalker.  I only go after Jabba’s bounties.  Money I make elsewhere won’t pay off my debt to him.”

“And Solo?” she asked.

“Too tied up with the Empire for my taste.  I’d rather take longer and keep my head than end up on the wrong side of someone like Darth Vader.”

A taste of what I’m trying to write for AU week.  Maybe I finish it, maybe it won’t get there.  Here’s hoping, crosses fingers

Follow up to “Long Way Home” for Lovecember

“I mean Veronica, I expected some kitschy knick knacks, a book on Scotland Yard, pictures from the Jack the Ripper tour you took. This,” he gestures to Logan’s leaning form against the doorframe, “was not what I was expecting in terms of a souvenir.” He sighs but drops the subject, asking Logan instead about the Padres.

Veronica fights the urge to tug the hemline of the too-short skirt, and crosses her arms to try and cover her bare midriff. If somebody told her two months ago that she would be wearing a Neptune High cheerleading outfit, her hair high in a ponytail, she would have laughed in their face. And then punched them. Not necessarily in that order.

As Veronica and Lilly walk towards the field, she surveys the group of girls in matching green and yellow outfits. At her old school, she went out of her way to avoid these types of girls. And now, she had to be this type of girl.

She wants to flee. Lilly owes her big.

Veronica stretched out on her bed and sighed, adjusting the phone to the other ear.

"So, how was your meeting tonight?"

Logan snorted and chuckled on the other end. "My Magic The Gathering night was fun.  Thanks for asking."

"Did your wizard beat their wizard or whatever it is that happens?"

"Veronica, I know you're making an effort, and I appreciate it, but you don't have to. It's okay for us to have different hobbies. It's fine."

"Well, that's a relief, because I know you explained it to me back in Neptune but all I remembered was blah, blah, nerd something, blah blah..."

"Duely noted. Just so you know, my first M.I.T. D&D get together is this Sunday afternoon, so we can just skip the convo about that on Monday too."

"Okay, that I remembered a bit more about when you explained it because of the little figurines you have in your room. They're cute. Especially that tiny purple dragon you painted."

“So you and Macy, huh?”

Logan can’t help but smile, she’ll never stop jumping to her own conclusions when it comes to him.

“You know I prefer blondes.”

“Preferences aside, I’m sure more than one stunning brunette has made it into your bed over the years.”

And there it is, the insecurity she hasn’t been able to shake off in half a life time.

“Veronica, I—.”

“No, you’re right, it’s none of my business.”

“I was actually going to say let’s try something new for us and not dance around the truth. I’m not with Macy. I’m not with anyone.”

“Listen, Veronica, there’s something I wanted to…” Piz trails off and his eyes ping-pong back and forth between Logan and Veronica. “Oh, I’m sorry. Was I interrupting something?” 

Logan opens his mouth to say he will give them some privacy, when Veronica’s arms snake around his waist. Logan pulls back out of surprise, but Veronica latches on tighter.

“Actually, Logan and I were just talking about how it’s our one-week anniversary.”

Logan isn’t sure whose face shows more shock, his or Piz’s, but Veronica tips her head up to look at him and firmly squeezes his side with her hand. 

“Yes, our one-week anniversary. Best week of my entire life, Snookums.” He scrunches his nose in mock affection and she scrunches hers back.

Six Sentence Sunday

I’m still figuring this stuff out. 

It started as a game. Just something silly to pass the time since I was alone on Christmas. I figured, who doesn’t love a good mystery. I’d put it out there and see what happened. 

If it made a connection, got someone else to feel a little better while making me less lonely, so much the better. 

Who knows maybe it’ll even lead to love.

“We need a lawyer. Do you have a lawyer?” asked Logan.

“You’re joking aren’t you?” replied Veronica. “Poor people don’t have lawyers.”

“What about Cliff?”

“Well sure, if you want my dad to find out.”

“I didn’t think about your dad.”

They looked at each other in horror.

“Logan.” Barging in the bathroom, she perches on the counter and speaks over the spray. “You have to talk to me.”

But apparently, he doesn’t. He ignores her until the water turns off, then grabs his towel. Drying off, he wraps it around his waist in silence before sighing. He runs a hand over his wet hair, eyes anguished.

“Veronica, how could you? You broke into Dick’s office!”
