The Right Questions
Hello, my name is Paul Alcorn and here is your 60 seconds for this week.
One of my favorite quotes is this: If they get you asking the wrong questions, they don’t have to worry about the answers. In the busyness of last week I realized I was spending far too much time on the wrong questions and so tried to shift, at least a part of my focus to what I thought the right questions should be. To help me out, I made a list of the questions I wanted to be mindful of to and then tried to spend some time that day paying attention to them. Not to be naïve or to dismiss the seriousness of situations in which we find ourselves, here is the list of the “right questions” I did my best to pay attention to. What am I grateful for today? Where did I see or experience kindness? What can I do to help? What, today, took my breath away?
In the busyness of your own life, what are the right questions you want to make sure you pay attention to?
Thanks again for joining me.
Made For Each Other

Hello, my name is Paul Alcorn and here is your 60 seconds for this week This past week I read an article which sighted a 2013 study by the United Health Group which among other things found…
• 75% of employees who volunteered said they felt healthier
• Over 90% said volunteering put them in a better mood.
• Over 75% said they felt less stress • 96% said that volunteering enriched their sense of purpose in life (which in turn has been found to strengthen our immune function).
The study puts data around what philosophers and mystics and our religious traditions have known and been telling us this for centuries. We are made for each other. Empathy and compassion are the building blocks of our being. With them we flourish. Without them we perish.
Creating Heaven or Hell
Here is the video: http://bit.ly/1dpABW8
And, if you would like to read it, here is the text. It was Jonathan Sachs, Chief Rabbi for the British Commonwealth who said, “You can’t get to heaven by creating hell on earth. We certainly see enough examples of the hell being created. The atrocities in Syria. The chaos and killings in parts of Africa and in Afghanistan. And, this week marks the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001.
I can do little to influence what is taking place in Syria or Afghanistan. And I can’t undo the events of 9/11. But I realized that what I can do is this. If others are doing their best to create hell on earth I can do my best to create heaven on earth with all of the intentionality and conviction and courage I can muster.
Alone I can’t match their “fire power”, but together, with you… I wonder.
Crashing The Party
Here is the video: http://bit.ly/189wyMd
And, if you would like to read it, here is the text: A story is told about a time when Jesus was invited to the home of a prominent person. The guests were gathered. The meal was about to be served. Just as everyone was about to take their seat at the table a woman crashes the party and falls crying at the feet of Jesus. The crowd gasps. The host looks on in anger... First at the woman for crashing the party and then at Jesus for not distancing himself from the woman. As the host stammers in indignation, Jesus turns to him and says, "Simon, I have something to say to you."
Believing as I do that the Bible is not just about then, but also about now and not just about them, but also about you and me, I have found myself wondering what might Jesus was to say to us...about who we are and how we live and the choices we make and the challenges we face. And then, I wonder... Would we have the openness and courage to hear what he had to say?
