Sum up
To sum up my plan for the next two years, I aim to get my contracted hours from yorks to provide me with a consistent income whilst applying for and doing internships and gaining whatever experiences come my way. I also intend to complete mine and Aileens application for a flat in the area to enable us to stay in the area for more opportunities.
Bring on the next two years.
Sites
I have joined a few sites that will help with my search for creative opportunities, such as Hiive and Indeed.
These sites notify me of new opportunites, internships and jobs within the design industry and in my location.They have proved really useful so far in the search for these types of jobs and I will continue to use them after my degree is over.
Side Projects
I also intend to keep my creativity up by completing side projects for myself and loved ones, such as my photography, visiting exhibitions, Graphic designs (cards, baby grow etc) and Illustrations. This way, even if I do not fall into a job or internship straight away, I can still stay creative.
Claire Hartley
I emailed another freelance illustrator/graphic designer called Claire Hartley who is based down in London. I asked her a few questions which she replied to and she also attached a list of other questions she has previously been asked by other students looking for guidance. She suggested (the same as Alan) that I gain as much experience through any opportunities that arise such as internships and working in agencies as she found this to be the most important stage of developing her career and where she found she gained the most knowledge of the industry.

Internships
I have been applying for any internships that I come across that are based in the Midlands as this is where I want to stay in my first two years following university. I have applied for any that come under digital design, designer and graphic designer. A few of them have been possible internships with design agencies which I am waiting to hear back from such as Scruffydog and Squibble design agencies. If I do not get any of these opportunities I will keep applying for anything that comes up so that I can keep on being creative alongside having a consistent income from Yorks.
Yorks
I am in talks with my manager and boss as to setting up contracted hours for myself, rather than the 0 hours contract I currently have. This will help bring in a reliable and consistent wage to keep me going while looking for other work/internships. As I have held my job with the company for 20 months, I am confident this will be processed quickly, enabling me to start looking at renting somewhere with Aileen so that I can stay local to the Birmingham area.
Alan - Phone Call
After talking over email, Alan arranged for me to call him on Wednesday 5th April at 3pm.
So I called him at this time and we chatted about what he does and he gave me some tips for starting out in the design industry. He works with Creative agencies and freelance designers to create work for companies. He pulls in the people with the necessary skills for the job. He said while freelance is a great way to work, when starting out in the industry you need to build up two or three years experience working with clients on projects outside of university. He suggested the best way for me to go about getting my name out there would be to start off working in an agency or as an intern in a company, where you are supported by mentors and colleagues. This way I can build up a portfolio of projects completed outside of university and build up my knowledge of the industry while creating contacts and learning new skills. He said that if I can’t find my way into such an agency then to look at other ways of using my creativity, such as marketing roles, working with their in house designers while still being able to appreciate the good designs. He also suggested that I start applying for internships and contacting agencies now. He wished me luck with everything and told me to email him if I have nay more questions or need any more information at all.
He was really useful to talk to and helped guide me as to what to aim for next once my degree finishes.
Freelance Designer Case Study 1
Ryan Carter
This designer worked for a large company, creating designs for this company but also completed freelance work on the side of this full time job. He decided to focus on his freelance work once he had built up a reasonable amount of clients and his freelance work had started to build up and he had a waiting list growing. He also has a background in product design as this is what he studied in university and completed some work in but now he mainly focuses his work on graphic design and web design.
To also get my name out into the professional industry I have created a LinkedIn profile that allows different industry professionals to view my account and potentially seek me out for possible work.
Alan
My step mum gave me the email address of Alan, someone who she had worked with through DeliFrance and who deals with freelance designers. I emailed to introduce myself and ask if he would be available to chat or even answer some questions over email about how he got to where he is, exactly what he does and for general advice about working in design. He responded a few days later (because he had been out of the country) and so I started organising a time and a place for us to meet up and have a chat.
Emails to Design Agencies
I have tried emailing multiple design agencies to ask them questions about what it is like to work in this kind of environment, however I have had no luck in the way of response. So I am going to go to my next plan of contacting individuals in the design industry and asking them about their experiences in the industry. Starting with Alan, a freelance creative who is a contact given to me through my step mum.
Client Experience
The Last Fanz Standing/Zesty Orange Productions
I have recently taken on some work for two production companies made up of two groups of media students from Birmingham City University. I created the production company logo for Zesty Orange Productions, as well as the logo for their quiz show, The Last Fanz Standing. I worked closely with this group although they allowed me to be creative and suggest my own ideas, interpreting their own ideas in a different way. Overall they were really pleased with what I created for them and both have been implemented into their social media campaigns and into the quiz show itself.
Robyn
I also worked with ReelReal Films, who are creating a short film called ‘Robyn’ They wanted a logo creating for their social media sites and so I took on their suggestions and themes, and created something that they thought was right for what they needed, something simple that implies the theme of an interview. They than asked me to mock up their exact idea for another graphic in the show which would be a simple, corporate, accounting business logo for smaller graphics on pieces of paperwork that will feature in the film itself.
I have really enjoyed working with and for people, helping them to bring their ideas to life and being able to add my own creative input. This is making me think that a design agency or freelance work is the kind of thing I would want to do.
Tea
Tea is a series of podcasts ran by one of the third year media students, discussing mental health. I also used the colour blue to coincide with the colours of the mental health organisation. I was asked to create two logos to be used in the marketing of the podcasts and radio sessions, and worked closely with the client, making changes to the parts he wanted tweaking but in the end he was really pleased with the results and even recommended me onto a few friends as well as some charities he has worked with in the past.
CV
I have produced a CV in order to send out along with a link to my website when I email companies and agencies to ask about what kind of work they do. I wanted to create a creative CV that links, to my website through having the same aesthetic for the visuals. I have also included all of my relevant qualifications and work that I have carried out recently. I have included large segments about myself as I feel it is important to get as much about yourself into a CV as possible as it is for most part, the first thing employers see and judge you on. I have tried to make it more creative by drawing up the illustrations for the logos for each section, which I feel may make my Cv stand out more from others.
Content
About
The first page I worked on was an about page. I have put a section about what I enjoy doing, the mediums I have worked in and the softwares I am competent in. I have also put some information about where I am from and where I have studied. I have also included my email as a point of contact, should anyone want to get in touch with me.
Projects
My photography is shown in my Instagram, with a link from my website to my instagram account. My bookshelf B-Spoke and AD-4107 projects are there to show my 3D work. The bike photography and video are there to show my basic understanding of film and editing images. I have also included the website I designed as part of the group project in second year called ‘surface deatail’ in order to show I have a good understanding of Muse. I have a logo design that I created alongside a group of media students for their production company, to show my digital design work, as well as their quiz show logo ‘The Last Fanz Standing’ and a social media logo for another group of media students who also wanted me to work with them. I have also re made the ‘rotters’ project I did in first year to show my campaign design. Finally the last two images are of the logo designs that I created for another media student for his website project for third year called TEA.
For each of my projects I have a page full of imagery as the main focus and then a link to a brief written blurb about each project.

Logo
To start my website I decided to design a logo for myself to base the themes of my website on. I decided to create these on Adobe Illustrator in the hope of creating a website using Adobe Muse.
The last image is my final Logo design. I have drawn up the font to make it stand out more and used a slightly blue/green colour for my middle name to add a bit of colour into it. I have also drawn up an illustration of myself with my camera as part of the logo. I wanted something that would immediately show my skill set as a designer.
Messaging Tiff
I messaged my Step mum, who works as a product developer for DeliFrance, because she has some contacts with a couple of design agencies in Leicester that she has used before. The first is an agency called Juice, who they used for a lot of their branding material and Tiff gave me the e-mail of the best contact for me to get in touch with. The second was an independent designer who has done some work for them also. I want to next build a website and create a CV before contacting these people with some questions about working in a design agency and as an independent designer, along with a link to my website and a copy of my CV attached also.
