With the recent rumblings about censorship and work deletions on Wattpad, many users are considering posting to AO3 for the first time. If that describes you, you may have questions.
This post is a collection of resources you can use to start finding the answers to these questions. If you donāt find what youāre looking for at the links below or you have something more specific to ask, please feel welcome to post questions in the reblogs and comments here.

How does AO3 work? What is and isnāt allowed?
My first recommendation for new users is always to skim the Terms of Service FAQ. It explains what AO3 allows and why in plain, straightforward terms. AO3 does not allow placeholder works, commercial content such as commissions links, or āwork searchā posts.
How can I change the look of the site?
The appearance of AO3 is very customizable! If you just want a basic dark mode, scroll down to the bottom of any page and click āReversiā under the Customize menu. For more advanced customizations, I canāt recommend @ao3commentoftheday enough. They have so many gorgeous tutorials for everything from site skins to making the siteās content filters do whatever you want.
Wattpad users may especially appreciate the Floating Comment Box extension, which makes commenting on AO3 work slightly more like Wattpad.
How does AO3 search work?
This handy guide by @backofthebookshelf covers the basics. Here is a cheatsheet with more advanced searching tricks.
Iām ready to post my own works. How do I add [specific thing]?
With a little bit of HTML, you can do some incredibly neat things in an AO3 work. Hereās the website running Doom. Here is a very comprehensive guide to Limited HTML on AO3. It may look intimidating at first, but you can get a lot done by copying and pasting and paying attention to the results. As a fun bonus, check out the rest of the series, which includes step by step instructions for making your fic look like text messages on a phone screen, newspaper articles, sticky notes, and more.
Why is Wattpad doing this now? Have similar things happened before?
Fandom creatives have been outrunning purges and legal threats for a long time. Here is a comprehensive timeline of fandom purges and legal actions taken against fanworks, from 1977 to the present day. Here is another timeline written by @olderthannetfic, with associated commentary from other fans.
Purges on LiveJournal and other sites circa 2007 influenced the founding of AO3. You can read in detail about the circumstances of its founding and the construction of the policies it abides by today here.

It's not the first site to turn on fandom, and it won't be the last.
At least AO3 makes it easy to find things, no matter how old or obscure.
Check out the fandom index by media type and try going directly to your fandom's tag or a ship or another tag and using the sidebar filters. AO3 does have a search box and even an advanced search, but those are less of a default compared to Wattpad and other sites.

(Prompt submission) Grace's Eridian doctors are large animal veterinarians. There are some awkward adjustment periods.
THIS š¤£š¤£ imagining the absolutely bonkers kinds of eridians that must have been yoinked from their jobs to suddenly be in charge of keeping the FIRST SAPIENT ALIEN EVER alive brings me cackling-maniacally levels of glee. yes, please tell me more about the eridian lab tech who does the boring, monotonous cataloguing of bacterial glycosyltransferase enzymes suddenly having their space phone BLOWING UP. random eridian who's job is just. feeding and wrestling the big terrestrial predators at the zoo into taking their meds is suddenly missing from work, later found to be kidnapped and taken to Eridian WHO headquarters with new job of putting pills in peanut butter for rocky's new alien pal. thank you thank you!
What if human astronauts visit Erid one day and are doing diplomatic things and whatnot and they learn Ryland Grace is sstill alive and is in a terrarium. One of the astronauts jokingly says āyouāre not experimenting on him are youā and the Eridians freeze cause yeah, they totally are. They experiment on him all the time. Theyāre experimenting on him right now in fact. They read about deep sea diving and are now testing the effects of replacing certain gases in Graces atmosphere. Right now theyāre testing helium.
They send someone to stop the experiment but Grace refuses cause theyāre so far in already and well that would just ruin the data.
The new humans think this is hilarious and insist on joining the experiment as Grace excitedly yaps about all the cool stuff heās learned about aliens but heās still got that high pitched helium voice.
Grace having left over vodka and asking the Eridian scientists to make him more, without telling Rocky or Adrian.. the scientists find the ethanol and think that Grace must not know how bad it is and tell Grace but then Grace explains that no, that is the entire point please leave the dangerous chemical in thank you.
So the scientists immediately assume Grace has completely lost it and tell Rocky and Adrian and it goes like this:
Scientist: so.. Grace has requested we make him a kind of human drink..
Adrian: okay? Is there an issue?
Scientist: see- the thing is- it has a chemical that is quite harmful to humans but he insists we leave it in?? Itās called ethanol and-
Rocky: NO NO DO NOT MAKE IT GRACE IS STUPID WHEN HES DRUNK NO PLEASE-
