MarchFourth Marching Band

The MarchFourth Marching Band took an afternoon off on their busy tour to entertain students over the lunch hour on City Campus. 15 band members and 8 dancers set up on the City Campus Union Plaza for 30 minutes while several students watched. Set up and tear down went seamlessly, as every band member pitched in to get things up and running. The performed a few songs and got most of the crowed pumped up for their show at the Bourbon that evening.

MarchFourth hails from Portland, OR. They are touring across the country hitting up most of the midwest and southern states, including North Carolina and Florida. While this wasn't their first time in Nebraska, it was their first time on campus. "It was fun!" said the band's leader John Averill, "We really appreciate the opportunity from KRNU and enjoy performing for students."

Lincoln Calling 2012 - Part 2

Lincoln Calling is a refreshing reminder of just how well coordinated our music scene is on a local level. The bands sounded great, the shows were starting on time, and everyone was happy. While the turnout was far short of overwhelming, the atmosphere was warm and cozy, with a healthy mix of age groups and “scenes” being represented.

The Bourbon Theatre is an all-around great place for music, the sound is good, the people are friendly, and their smaller secondary stage provides a special sort of intimacy that is hard to beat locally.
! The acts were very impressively executed and none of the performances lacked talent. The first show I caught was The Mynabirds, a two piece from Twain Harte, California, with one of the pieces missing. Even without her accompaniment, Chelsey, the remaining member, was phenomenal. She stood at her piano and belted an array of original work, possessing a deeply soulful classic voice, her whole act was received excellently.
! Each performance I saw went by the book, the bands held the audience’s attention and seemed to be having loads of fun doing it.

Another notable performance was Classes, a local three piece with a folky sound, that I found to be a friendly reminder of just how much talent us Lincolnites have. I really can’t say enough how impressed I was with all the acts; they were high energy, original, and the performers were clearly dedicated to their craft.
! Everyone involved helped to make the night a success, and even though numbers for Wednesday shows are generally low, too many people missed out on some groovy tunes. Lincoln has a great music scene and the capacity to attract some outrageous talent, don’t miss any of the nights of Lincoln Calling, you won’t be disappointed.

Lincoln Calling 2012

Lincoln Calling brought musicians from coast to coast (literally).  The schedule contained acts such as Hume, from Baltimore, and Minor Birds and Gayle Skidmore, both from California.

The sidewalks were sprinkled with unknown musicians displaying their talents for all to see. There was a wide variety of acts ranging from singing and playing the guitar, to someone rhythmically pounding on bongos.

Lincoln native band Classes started off the lineup at the Bourbon Theatre. The dim lighting of the venue set the mood for the trio of drums, guitar, and viola as they started off with calm tone.  The stage was the perfect size to make for a comfortable and intimate setting with a night of great music.

Meanwhile, across the street at Duffy’s Tavern, Good Show Great Show was jamming out to their music. The band was very energized, especially because they were celebrating a birthday among one of the band members. The crowd fed off of the energy the band was giving; there were people dancing and cheering in complete happiness and enjoyment.

Back at the Bourbon Theatre, Minor Birds was rocking it out. Minor Birds consists of one musician who sings and plays keyboard. She was very open and conversational with the crowd, as she told a story that pertained to her song “Meet Me After Dark.” Minor Birds, who is currently touring with Gayle Skidmore, blew everyone away with her controlled, powerful, and strong vocal and keyboard skills.

The night was undoubtedly a success with the variety and quality of the musical talents. This was only the second night of Lincoln Calling; one can only imagine what the rest of the festival will bring.

KRNU Sessions: Good Show Great Show

On Tuesday September 25, KRNU continued their “KRNU Sessions” series with Good Show Great Show. The band’s name suits them well, as they not only put on a good show, but they put on a great show.

Lincoln’s own Good Show Great Show consists of three best friends and University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduates: Anthony Galvan, Dan Kohler, and Taylor Weichman. Amidst answering questions of behalf of KRNU Music Director, Joe Teplitsky, Good Show Great Show played a set list containing four songs. Three of those songs were from their new album “Larry Turquoise.”

The band kick started the session by playing “Sheppard’s Last Stand,” which they said was the very first song they wrote and recorded together. The guys of Good Show Great Show met in college by being apart of the Bathtub Dogs (a male a capella group) at UNL. After years of talking about starting a band, Good Show Great Show started December of last year. The band went on to play two more songs from their new album, “Francis” and “Iron Gates.”

The band wrapped up the session by playing a brand new song titled “The Old Wolf.” The song was first heard in this KRNU session and does not appear on the album “Larry Turquoise”, which is set to release on Wednesday, September 26th. Good Show Great Show will be celebrating their album release along with Freakabout and Field Club at Duffy’s Tavern on Wednesday.

KRNU Sessions: Communist Daughter

KRNU hosted Communist Daughter to kick off a new live series called KRNU Sessions on Wednesday, Sept. 19th. Communist Daughter, after a slight delay, played through their set, live on 90.3 FM and KRNU2. They proved to be worth the wait as the folk rock band from Minneapolis put on a wonderful performance.

The band’s lead vocalist Johnny Solomon, along with female vocalist Molly Moore, performed the acoustic versions of three of their songs live and on air for all of KRNU’s listeners as well as answering questions from the station's Music Director Joe Teplitsky. They started off with the song Ghosts, which is featured on their recently released EP, Lions and Lambs.

After the first song they were asked who some of their musical influences were and Solomon quickly came to Paul Simon, saying that he didn’t see a direct influence in their music but he had always been a big fan. He went on to talk about a phase he went through in which he listened to many soul records and he thought that could have influenced some of their music. They then performed the title song from their 2010 LP, Soundtrack to the End. The duo finished their performance with the first ever live acoustic performance of the song, Avery, from the aforementioned Lions and Lambs EP. All three songs sounded great, even in the small confines of the KRNU studio which is far from the best acoustic environment.

Communist Daughter were a lot of fun to be around, cracking jokes and having laughs in between songs. The band began it’s month long tour at Blue Bird in Omaha and they will continue to perform in the coming weeks at venues across the Midwest and West Coast. Overall the first installment of KRNU Sessions goes down as a success with a great performance from Communist Daughter. The next band to be featured on KRNU Sessions will be Lincoln’s own Good Show Great Show on September 25th. Be sure to check it out!

New Geographer album, Myth, released today. I’m just four tracks in and I really like what I’m hearing so far. Saw them at the end of 2010 and have been a fan ever since.
