certainly there are more of them now than there have ever been but it's crazy how "annoying dude who thinks he's just like the romans" has been an unfortunately common Type of Guy for well over a millennium

I really do not think there's much in utena that terfs would find particularly disagreeable if they weren't put off by it being japanese and discussing incest. it's kinda weird to act like it's self evidently something "not for terfs". Obviously it's good to not want them around but it's kind of a lazy way to wash your hands of them that doesn't really make things safer for trans women.

Like Utena would actually be a great setting to discuss transmisogyny, I think it could work really really well. Because lo and behold transmisogyny is a form of misogny. But it doesn't do that. And barring that there's not really anything in the show about the patriarchy that a group of feminists who are also transmisogynists would find particularly objectionable (again barring racism and such, which itself assumes that terfs are all white). It feels like an attempt to wash your hands of any association with them, as if simply by liking something it becomes "anti terf".

And there's obviously a failure to understand what terfs actually are here (including the fact that they're like.... actual people who do stuff and watch things and have lives outside of being an internet boogyman), particularly their relationship to trans women specifically, which is a broader problem with TME people at large. And I think part of the attitude comes from "there's lots of Trans People [generic] in the fandom!!!" as if both tme trans ppl and terfs don't keep reading "After all, all AFABs are the rose bride" type shit into a show about a form of oppression far larger than gender assignment.

Anyway that shit is annoying, do better to actually meaningfully make trans women safe and welcome and especially challenge your own ways of thinking!!!!
