I do think a lot about the relation with animals that rural communities often had in europe, and how that sort of arcadian look at their companion animals from cities (and often literally backwards from the future) betrays the comically severe ethical mismatch of what someone who lives as steward to animals will do to animals for fun

phrasing this with as little judgement as possible, because when you're not making a joke and wielding shock value it's important to clarify that there really isn't a universal true ethical system that we've finally landed on, but industrialisation really did lead to some unpleasasnt collisions between what the urban worker had been assuming farmers were doing in their spare time and what was actually done with excess, lame, or otherwise non-traditionally-productive animals in communities that could not afford to maintain them
