The Blue & the Beyond - Pencil Test vs. Film

Here are the shots I animated for The Blue & the Beyond! I thought it’d be neat to show how each shot progressed from storyboard, through rough animation, to final.

A lot of people worked on this film! I was one of the animation leads, but there were teams for story, layout, animation, color, compositing, and so on. For the most part, I did rough animation and some cleanup, and as a lead prepped shots with Barren (the big bad) for cleanup, by drawing over a frame or so. Whoever was assigned cleanup animation for that shot would use my drawing as a guide. 

Animation is often a group endeavor; in our case each shot was passed through the hands of many! This little video shows “my shots” in the sense that I rough animated them, and in some cases did the cleanup as well.  I also tried to incude a few intermediate passes of the rough animation for the shots where I still had those files. Animation is a very iterative process; each shot went through many, many versions before being finaled!
