i feel like jeongje does not get spoken of enough considering how important he is not just in regards to the events of the story but also from a craft angle. he serves as an interesting parallel/contrast to hjw (sons of privilege, sons of expectation, sons of abuse) and kjm (recipients of ds’s fierce protection, betrayers of that love). and he’s the only other character aside from dongsik whose relationship with yuyeon is given depth within the narrative that doesn’t have to be wholly guessed at. and not only that, but their relationship lets her step off the pedastal that death places her on.

no wait sorry i’m still thinking about this literally twelve hours later. i am certainly not going to be any less incoherent at midnight than i was at noon, but my demons will not let me rest if i don’t release them from the prison of my brain.

it’s the way that, of the flashbacks i remember clearly, yuyeon is cast into two different roles: an idealized version of herself (perfect daughter, good christian, musically gifted and intelligent, dongsik’s better half, etc) or tragic victim of a horrific crime. EXCEPT when we see her communicating with jeongje. she breaks the perfect daughter mold by sneaking out after dark to see him. she has secrets and she gets mad and she feels so real and close in the scene where the two of them argue. and i just think that it’s so interesting that it’s jeongje’s memories that make her feel more human to the viewer while, at the same time, his mind desperately tries to shape the memory of her into something other than human (a deer) in order to protect him from the devouring nature of his guilt!!!!
