Brothers (Cont. 6)

âIâd like to stay for the signing if thatâs alright with you.â Rafael didnât want to say that he just wanted to spend time with him because he was afraid that would sound too emotional. âYou know, because you donât know this city well and Iâd just feel better if I was here. Do you need anything?â
Waiting for Fredâs reply, he brought him around a long strand of screens that separated a makeshift âbehind stageâ area for Fred with his signing table in the middle. Rafael couldnât help but notice that his brother was sweating a bit. He wondered if this was because of speaking or general nervousness or his condition. Not wanting to embarrass him, he decided not to mention anything but be on the lookout for Fred not looking well.Â
Listening to his brother talk about not being able to let him pay for the ring was sweet. Rafael was more interested in the part where Fred took the time to say that it meant a lot to him. As long as he noticed that Rafael was trying to extend an olive branch then he was happy.
At the mention of dinner, Barba was now thinking about food which he was never afraid to admit generally occupied his mind. In fact, he realized that when heâd walked into the bookstore heâd taken notice of the adjoining Starbucks and glanced at their menu while Fred was speaking.Â
âYou know me, Freddie, nothing captures my heart more than a good dinner.â Being cautious not to move to quickly, he gently patted Fredâs upper arm with a light touch, enough to try and convey that he was eager to have a nice meal with his brother, but not brazen enough to trigger feelings of nervousness or PTSD for Fred. At least he hoped. âAfterwards I know youâll probably be tired after the whole day so I can get you back to your hotel or youâre always welcome to my place.â
They noticed the publicist waving Fred over to start the signing process. He had graciously set up a chair next to him for Rafael to sit at. But Barba thought twice.
âHey, Fred, I see he put a chair next to you for me but I know you hadnât planned on having me be here necessarily. Iâd like to sit next to you in case you need anything but if you would feel uncomfortable,â in fact Raf was uncomfortable saying this, âI could always, ya know, stay back here out of your way.â He threw on an itâs-okay-if-thatâs-your-decision-but-secretly-Iâd-be-really-disappointed smile as he inquired.
Frederick smiled at his brother. He so appreciated that Rafael was asking what he wanted now, and not just assuming. Fred watched as his brother struggled with words-it was nice to know he wasnât the only one who was awkward at times.Â
âCertainly, please stay Rafael,â Frederick said, as he allowed Rafi to move him to the screened area. He was also glad the speech was over, but he was also nervous about the signing. He wasnât really excited to meet so many different people. Surely most would be nice, but he was worried some might have upsetting questions. Perhaps that was something his brother could help with, since Rafael seemed more comfortable in dealing with the public. Frederick took a handkerchief out of his pocket, gently dabbing his forehead. âWell, you could tell me if I have to ahâŠâ he worried his bottom lip, not sure how to ask. âFix my faceâŠâ he said in a whisper, looking to the ground, his cheeks coloring at his own words.Â
Frederick also wanted to see Carolynâs ring, he was anxious to make sure it looked okay. He was taken from that thought at Rafiâs hand on his arm, which was gentle and kind. It warmed his heart to see his brother being kind to him, after being so upset with him earlier. Fred smiled, and let out a soft chuckle. âWell, some things never change,â he said. âWherever you want to eat afterwards is fine by me, as long as they have some things I can handle, which shouldnât be hard to find,â he said. âAnd you could show me the ring after? Iâm anxious to have it back, and make sure it looks okay,â he said nervously. He was also nervous about it getting lost, he knew that would hurt his love greatly.Â
Again, Rafael was deferring to his brotherâs needs, asking if he wanted to go back to the hotel afterwards. Finally Frederickâs words had been conveyed, and he wanted things to go well between him and Rafael. The fighting was much too painful.Â
âI am tired, yes Rafi,â he said quietly. âLetâs see how I feel after dinner, if you donât mind,â he said kindly to his brother.Â
Rafael sighed at Mark waving them over. The man grated on Fredâs nerves. He raised a finger to show he would be over in a minute. Frederick turned to his brother, away from Mark, speaking low so they wouldnât be heard. âRafael, I would like it if you stayed. ActuallyâŠI could use your help,â he admitted. âI told Mark I didnât want personal questionsâŠbut he doesnât always listen,â he said with a nervous laugh. âPerhaps you could, um, help with that, please? Maybe change conversation topics if need be?â he said softly and there was a slight tone of pleading in his voice.Â
Frederick hoped that Rafael wouldnât think he was being ridiculous, but Fred was nervous, more than he would like to admit. He hoped Rafi would do this for him, it would help with his anxiety. Frederick was afraid if people asked some personal questions, or insisted on talking about things he didnât want to discuss, he would get up and leave, not being able to handle it.
Watching Fred dab his face and then make a mention about fixing it, Rafael just couldnât help himself. âYou know Fred thank god someone finally fixed your face or youâd have to go through life looking even more like me and honestly, who wants that.â Barba chuckled at his own joke, wanting to create a little humor after a blow-out. âBut of course, if I notice anything is slipping or looks strange, Iâll just announce that you need a comfort break. Iâve always found it funny that judges can never actually seem to say they need to use the restroom; itâs announced that they need a âcomfort break.ââ
Seeing Fred smile was calming, even if he wasnât that funny. Anything to bring down his brotherâs anxiety.Â
âYeah, look, you just let me know what youâre comfortable eating and we can find a restaurant for you. This is New York City after all. If you canât find it here, you canât find it.â They walked together over to where Mark is standing while Frederick related his issues with Mark not taking into account his needs. Rafael thought about it for a moment and didnât even consider not helping him. He could understand how personal others can get and he wouldnât want to deal with that if he was his brother.
âYeah, listen, I donât think Mark is going to take the hint. He doesnât seem like the type to really care whether youâre uncomfortable or not. Iâll change the topic if it comes up. Besides, Iâm the one who can make a good argument right?!â He could see that Fred was probably still uneasy with his answer but Rafael knew people like Mark who were only out for the publicity and really didnât care what happened with their client. Then again, he understood because that wasnât really his job anyway. He switched his mind into attorney-mode and went on the defense.
The rope holding back the line of people was removed and they rushed forward. Rafael could see the anxious response from his brother at the sight of the crowd so as the first woman moved forward Rafael stood quickly and went around to the front of the table, cutting her off. He stopped her and held out his hand, taking the book from her. He opened to the title page and handed it down to Fred to sign. He decided in a spilt second that this was going to be the new plan. All these people rushing at Fred, oh no, I donât think so. He didnât feel comfortable with his brother being overwhelmed like that and honestly, from a safety perspective, he didnât like it either. He was hoping Fred would hand him back the book so he could hand it to her and they could continue on that way.
âDr. Chilton, oh my gosh, itâs so great to meet you!â said one older woman who was redder than a tomato. âI just loved your book and I even took off work to finish it because it was so amazing! Was it scary working with Hannibal? Iâll bet it was scary!â She didnât even give him time to answer. âHow did your wife feel about that? Iâll bet she was scared for you! Were you married at that time? Wait now Iâm confused!â
Barba opened the book to the correct page and put it down on the table. âAnd who would you like this made out to?â he asked calmly.
âOh God I almost forgot! Chelsea, please make it out to Chelsea.â
âHow far did you travel to be here today?â Rafael asked, completely ignoring her previous questions.
âOh I came down from Boston. It was a long drive but definitely worth it!â
