Shacklebolt to resign?

3rd July 2016

Kingsley Shacklebolt’s position as Minister of Magic has today been speculated, following rumours he is pondering his resignation.

A spontaneous cabinet meeting of all Heads of Department was called by Shacklebolt yesterday evening, presumably to discuss the matters surrounding Shacklebolt’s rumoured departure. The minister’s secretary Lance Spair refused to comment on the matter when questioned earlier this morning, though appeared slightly flustered and fatigued; Daily Prophet photographer Jules Fernhead noted that “he’d clearly been in meetings all night, he was wearing his jumper back to front.”

Shacklebolt celebrated his 18th year as minister last month, and is not due for another election until 2019. Recent polls illustrate a strong national approval for Shacklebolt’s post, leading many to question the basis for possibly vacating his role.

There are a variety of potential reasons for Shacklebolt’s likely abdication, since the Ministry has faced recent turmoil following the abnormal movements of trolls, giants and werewolves during the past 8 months. Muggle Britain’s inevitable departure from the EU is also another likely trigger, the imminent arduous negotiations over the next 4 years could perhaps be a step too far for the 67-year-old.

The possibility of Shacklebolt leaving his post has also aroused rumours of his successor; probable individuals include Head of the Department for International Co-Operation Deon Royston and Head of the Department of Magical Education Astarte Samson. Though the most foreseeable candidate would be Head of the Department for Magical Law Enforcement, Hermione Granger. Granger has headed the department for 2 years and has worked an effective partnership with Shacklebolt, whose alliance dates back to the legendary ‘Order of the Phoenix‘. At only 36-years-old, If Granger were elected she would be the youngest Minister since the MoM’s inception in 1707.

Shacklebolt has overseen the rocky transition of post-war Britain, imposing various political and constitutional reforms which have shaped the stable society we live in today. Though many would be disheartened by his departure, if he did leave, there is no doubt he will be one of the most highly regarded M.o.M’s in British history.

Wizarding Schools Descend Upon Hogwarts

Hold your horses, readers! This week marks the initiation of the seventh W.A.C (Wizarding Academies Conference), currently unearthing at Hogwarts School for the first time since its inception. Last held in 2013, the conference was introduced following the second Wizarding War in order to tighten international relations and improve global student prospects. 

Though attendance at the conference is not compulsory for all 11 recognised wizarding institutes across the globe, this year sees the most schools represented since its inception 18 years ago. A total of 8 have agreed to attend; Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, France; Uagadou, Uganda; Mahoutokoro, Japan; Castelobruxo, Brazil; Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (host), United Kingdom and Ireland; Ilvermorny, of Northern America; and The Durmstrang Institute, of Northern Europe. This year also sees the addition of the Russian Academy of Koldovstoretz, which had previously refused to the conference on the grounds of their heated rivalry between the Durmstrang Institute. 

However all previous quarrels appeared to have been forgiven and forgotten as representatives and collectives of students arrived via air, sea, land and apparition earlier this morning. Each school is thought to have brought 50 students each to depict their respective institutes. The scene was an array of warm greetings and colour, as Castelobruxo’s bright green robes contrasted with Mahoutokoro’s varying gold and pink ones. 

It was also perceptible that a number of the students appeared particularly stirred at their arrival at the legendary school, undoubtedly due to the presence of Harry Potter’s son, first year Gryffindor James Potter. 

Students are expected to stay until Friday, and the week will be filled with exchanges, dinners and games, as well as usual lessons. For readers who would like to get involved with the conference, students will be visiting the Ministry of Magic on Thursday afternoon.

2015: Quidditch Reflection

With Christmas now coming to a sombre end, with many of us stirring from our beds after a day of celebrating, drinking and one too many mince pies - it’s now time to think ahead. There are just a handful more days left of 2015, and it’s been quite a year for Quidditch, and the British wizarding community alike. 

Perhaps one of the most notable occurences of 2015 was the sudden resurgence of the ill-famed Chudley Cannons. As the current bearer of Seeker Weekly’s ‘Worst Quidditch Team of the Decade’ award (thrice running), it’s hard to believe the Cannons managed to make it to the British and Irish League league finals. However equipped with a team of fresh faces, the team’s small legion of fans rejoiced as their defied all expectations and progressed to the finals. Unfortunately for the Cannons, their opponents were the Holyhead Harpies, one of the most established teams of the decade. 

Friendships were shredded and families torn as debate roared in anticipation of the match, with myself included. It seems I was burdened with a die-hard Chudley Cannons supporter for a brother, who initiated several heated disputes on this topic, resulting in numerous insults directed at my somewhat small height (much to the amusement of my husband, who has teased me on our ill-fated height difference for the past 18 years) and my brother’s unfortunate receding hairline (he’s in denial and very fragile).

Another substantial Quidditch tournament in 2015 was the European Quidditch League, which got under way in March, hosted in Zurich. Unsurprisingly to all of us England’s hopes of winning were diminished in the knock-out stages, as we were defeated 30-260 to Slovakia. Current World-Cup holders Bulgaria pulverised all competition and were favourites to win until their fateful semi-final match, in which 2 of their chasers suffered injuries from a suspicious case of spontaneous tonsillitis. Ireland therefore seized their chance at victory and reigned supreme after a close match with Turkey, beating them by just a 30 point margin. 

And so we may be drifting amongst the last remains of 2015, but let us look forward to 2016; a year of promising Quidditch antics and happenings. Will the Cannons take vengeance on the Harpies and claw their way to victory in the British and Irish League? (An article that I, for one, hope I never have to write.)

Whisper Bell

A curious small flower, Whisper bells can be made to grow in a number of colours, but cuttings should only ever be taken of two flowers of matched colours, which may then be grown apart, at different homes, to act as a means of communication. Simply, the flowers remain linked as long as they bloom, and speaking into one bloom will allow one to be heard by the possessor of the other flower. These plants were developed by renowned Herbologist and war hero, Neville Longbottom in the years after the war, who has said he did so “to just make it easier and quicker for people to talk.”

The plants themselves can live some 20-30 years, and have become rapidly popular, with some parents sending their children to school with a small potted one, so their child can speak to them from school. However many do not wish to go to the fuss of maintaining a plant when they could have an owl which hunts for itself, or indeed, nothing at all, and simply use school owls. The plants themselves can grow quite large - to the size of a decent shrub - and bonsai versions are being explored.

Season’s Greetings

We sincerely hope today is full of merrymaking, benevolence and most importantly, the excessive consumption of some excellent Christmas nosh!

Emergency International Conference Held Following New York Incident

International relations are at an all-time low succeeding an emergency conference in London last night. It is thought leaders of over 165 countries congregated upon a secret location in London to discuss the incidents transpiring in New York, where a muggle extremist group known as the “Second-Salemers” threatened to expose the Wizarding World. 

The anti-wizard group are thought to have been reigning in New York for many months, forcing the wizarding community into hiding. However no real threat transpired until Ministry of Magic employee Newt Scamander inadvertently released an array of perilous beasts upon the historic muggle city. Though all creatures have been contained, it is thought the mass muggle exposure to such beasts will result in the unveiling of the Wizarding World.

Uncertainty around the globe has led many countries holding the UK accountable for the incident, and although media access to the conference was strictly forbidden, it is reported that the Minister of Magic departed the conference in tears after only 11 minutes. 

Leaders allegedly shouted an array of insults at the Minister, including Italian Minister of Magic Antonietta Fonda, who shouted “è tutta colpa tua, porci!” (This is all your fault, you swines!). As tensions began to rise further, the Minister was promptly replaced by ex-member of the Wizenmagot and Head of the Department for International Relations, Henry Potter, whom calmed affairs. 

“Though the incidents transpiring in New York are troubling, we must be cautious not to hold all muggles - or ‘no-maj’s’ - accountable,” explained Potter in a responsive speech. “The group in New York are a few hundred out of billions of muggles, who have lived harmoniously amongst us for centuries. Since the incident in New York, felonies against muggles and muggleborns alike have risen by 98% in the UK alone, and this is clearly due to the rising ideal of pureblood supremacy. This situation can only be contained with international co-operation not only on political grounds, but moral.” 

The Minister later blamed his premature departure on a meeting with the Muggle Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, where they pair discussed matters. Although the Muggle Prime Minister appeared positive whilst initially greeting the Minister, Mr Fawley later explained “he didn’t understand what was going on much.”

Potters’ Embrace Muggle Traditions With Strange Decorations

Despite recent rumours of tribulation in the Auror Office, Harry Potter appears to have embraced the full Christmas spirit this year by adorning his house with an array of festive ornaments and illuminations. 

The controversial hero was seen with his wife Ginevra and 8-year-old daughter Lily on Friday Morning, bedecking their Georgian home in Bloomsbury, London with an exhibition of muggle Christmas lights. This is not the first instance the couple have illustrated their fondness of strange muggle traditions, as only last month their were seen engaging in the muggle tradition of ‘trick or treating’ with their 2 youngest children. 

The duo are reportedly thoroughly integrated within the British muggle community, and are often seen conversing with their muggle neighbours. Some allegations suggest that Mr Potter has even gone as far to purchase a muggle communication device, known as an ‘iphone’. 

“Considering the past few years, I did not suspect the Potters’ stature could be tarnished any further, but perhaps not,” commented Rita Skeeter on Tuesday evening. “This constant adoption of muggle ‘traditions’ may discourage muggleborn discrimination, however it consequently means neglecting our own wizarding traditions. The Potters are so iconic they have become representatives of British wizarding culture - what messages to we send internationally if we are abandoning our own traditions for these substandard muggle ones?” The Potter couple appeared undeterred by Skeeter’s comment however, with Mrs Potter allegedly responding with the comment “you’re just bitter I hexed you last year, you old bat.” 

Nevertheless the Potter family appear to be entirely elevated for their Christmas celebrations, as they welcomed home their eldest son James, 12, on Friday evening following his first term at Hogwarts School. Current Hogwarts Head Boy and Godson Teddy Lupin has also been glimpsed around the Bloomsbury area, supposedly visiting the family.

so i was pondering the cursed child and remembered this quote from the DH epilogue, and until now i never realised how weird it was. 

Why does Albus ask why everyone is staring at Harry?? Does he not know about his fathers’ fame and what he did?? What if in the Cursed Child, Albus struggles so much with dealing with the family reputation, because it’s a genuine shock to him? Did Harry and Ginny possibly hide all that happened in the war from their children??

What is everyone elses thoughts on this? I can’t help but feel this line is important.

Personally I think that Albus did know about how Harry was famous and The Boy Who Lived. I interpret that line as meaning more “why do they bother staring, don’t they see that’s kind of weird”, and not so much “why are people staring at my very normal dad”.

I once read someone’s post where they explained why they thought the same as me - they said that the use of “Albus demanded” as opposed to “asked” or “wondered” shows that it was more of an annoyed, slightly outraged statement than a real question. It makes it seem like Albus has already encountered this before.

Also, Ron makes a joke, “it’s me, I’m very famous” or something of the sort, and Albus and Rose laugh. If they really didn’t know, wouldn’t they ask him for more details instead of laughing? Also, Ron wouldn’t take all the credit if it wasn’t going to obviously be received as a joke.

Also, I think I read somewhere, I think a quote of a JK Rowling interview (or maybe someone’s post), that the Potter children knew the generalities as children, but obviously were told the more gruesome, horrifying aspects as they grew older. It makes sense to me that Harry and Ginny would tell them whatever piece of the story was appropriate to their age, and explain more and more as the children grew up.

I don’t see how Harry would manage to hide all that for 11 years (plus James Sirius had already been to Hogwarts, he would 100% know about it by the epilogue, and I get the sense that he would tell his brother). From the Prophet, acquaintances, books, and from general public outings, the children would notice.

I’m not sure if Harry would want to hide it from his children either, considering the stuff he wasn’t told a child.

It’s possible Albus could discover specifics that would shock him, but I think he knew in general.
