All Emilia’s life, she’s only known one place as home: a modest trailer nestled in the center of Tripp’s Trailer Park, in Roswell, New Mexico. All her life, she’s only had one person to call a parent: Margarita Herrera, her mother. If Emilia’s mother had ever known who her father was, she never filled her eldest daughter in on the details, and Mia was young when she started to learn that asking about him wouldn’t help her case. Though she never married, Margarita was no stranger to love, and much of Emilia’s childhood was spent watching men come in and out of her mother’s life. That’s how she got her little sister, Gracia, the much needed addition to their little family. To this day, she doesn’t know where she would’ve been without her.
A young mother, Margarita didn’t want to give up having a social life despite being a mother, often leaving her girls home alone after they had gone to bed so she could go out with her friends, asking the neighbors to keep an ear out in case anything were to happen. She loved to party – especially drink – and eventually when she got older and her friends stopped wanting to go out, she would continue that drinking and partying in their own home. By the time Emilia was thirteen she began to understand the effect drinking would have on her mother, often having to take care of her after coming home late at night, and trying to shield her sister from it for as long as possible. But Gracia know, and everyone around them knew, and soon enough it became impossible to ignore.
Having to take care of her mother, her sister, and herself, Emilia grew up pretty quickly in the Herrera household. She got a job as soon as she turned fourteen, right around the time her mother got fired from her current job and didn’t bother trying to find something new. The family never had much money to begin with, but even the smallest luxuries they had growing up seemed to disappear— namely the dance classes Emilia had begged her mom to sign her up for, at the age of eight. Her interest in dance quickly grew to a passion, wanting to absorb as much as possible and one day be a professional, but she could no longer afford the classes. For a few years Emilia worked as a custodian at the local dance studio, using that to secure her and her sister free classes, but like with all of Mia’s jobs, that couldn’t last for long.
It was gradual at first, Emilia realizing how similar she was to her mother. Though she had initially been turned off from alcohol because of her mom’s struggle with it, Mia had made friends through one of the many jobs she would go through over the years that were big into partying, bringing her into that lifestyle. She was smarter than her mother, granted, and learned quickly the power of limits, but by the time she was twenty-one nearly every bouncer and bartender in town would know her name. Emilia had also been cursed with her mother’s anger, loud and boisterous and ready to go off at the drop of a hat, which made keeping jobs pretty difficult. But Emilia always found a new job, never wanting to completely abandon her sister, like their own mother had done to them.
She was twenty-six when their mother passed away from alcohol poisoning, and Emilia started working twice the amount of hours to save up to live somewhere other than the trailer she had left them. None of the jobs she took were every of interest to her, useless service industry jobs and cleaning up other people’s shit. Emilia practiced dance on her own, trained in the hopes of one day leaving town and making a career for herself in Vegas… but despite blowing smoke to anyone who will listen, part of her expects to die in Roswell, just like her mom did.
Above all, Emilia is fiercely independent, learning from watching her mother recycle men over the years to not depend on anyone else. The only person she’ll lean on is her sister, and even then she doesn’t enjoy doing it; anyone else who tries offering her a hand will simply get a finger in response. Despite turning twenty-eight in a month, she still hasn’t gotten tired being the life of the party, and Emilia does love to drink, flirt, and dance with whoever she meets. But most relationships in her life are fairly skin-deep, because it takes a lot to really let somebody in.
