Ian didn’t want to write a recovery record. Recovery records are dishonest. They have distance enough to say that you’re better off now than you were then.

But there’s an honesty in the margins. It’s the point where you know this is the thing that’s going to kill you. And maybe you want to die, but you can’t, because what’s your family going to do? Your friends? The people who love you? So you have to get clean and fix your fucking life. But you know the person you are when you’re high and the person you are when you’re sober and you know which one you like more and it’s the guy who’s gonna burn out like a comet.
