Whoever said 2019 was gonna be a good year can get in the bin I did a titration today and not only did I smash a bastard conical flask I also covered the bench and a good portion of myself in hydrochloric fucking acid and now the head of department thinks I’m inept
7 Tips on How to Become a Morning Person
1. Prepare for work/school the night before
set things out that you need to do
pack your backpack or work bags
make your breakfast ahead of time
make sure you have a yummy breakfast so you have something to look forward to in the morning
2. Get to bed early enough that you get 6-9 hours of sleep per night
sleep is important to physical and mental health
when you sleep more then your performance at school/work will be much better than if you get less sleep
sleep can help better cope with emotions
studies have shown adequate sleep can help combat depression, eating disorders and substance abuse
3. Wake up at the same time everyday
this helps to regulate your body’s clock
when done repeatedly this makes it easier to wake up
your body is less likely to know when to start feeling sleepy
this will make you likely to push your bedtime later and further deprive yourself of rest
4. Do NOT hit snooze
the body needs some time to get you ready to wake up
when you hit snooze it allows your body to settle and enter another cycle of sleep
if you hit snooze a second time then your body gets a groggy, fuzzy-headed feeling called sleep inertia
the more you hit snooze, the more confused your body and brain gets
5. When you wake up open your curtains and make your bed
opening your curtains and letting in natural light will let your body know its morning
if it’s still dark outside just turn on the lights
making your bed lets your brain know that the day has begun
this also decreases the chance of crawling back into bed
this accomplishment will set the tone for the rest of day and will encourage you to continue to be productive
6. Stretch
when you sleep, your muscles lose tone and fluid tends to pool along your back
stretching helps massage fluid back into the normal position
stretching can be a great way to get ready physically and mentally into the day
7. Establish a routine
healthy morning rituals set the tone for the rest of the day
it may take some time to master your morning routine
but once you have one try to stick to it
many productivity expert recommends a morning routine in order to start the day
when making a routine think about what kind of person you are
“don’t talk to me before my coffee” person?
sharing your routine with someone? (an s/o or roommate?)
do you like having breakfast with others?
accountability is always a good idea
Waking up earlier and being productive was one of my New Years resolutions! I hope this helps you as well!
so your last semester wasn’t great.
we’ve all been there fam. in fact my previous semester was not great either – i got kicked out of my university’s honor program. You need a 3.5 cumulative GPA to stay in, and because of a lot of different circumstances, I finished out with a 3.48 – which is, frankly, better than i deserved. But this semester I’m gonna get a 4.0 and reapply. So here’s how ya do it.
1. have a good first day.
a big mistake is to go balls-to-the-wall discipline on your first day. Fuckin… relax, dude. Wake up as early as you need to be ready, but don’t push yourself to be up at 5am or anything like that. Set our your stuff the night before so you can have an easy morning. Treat yourself to a good breakfast or just get that fast food you’ve been craving for lunch. It’s really important not to stress yourself out too much, especially after your last semester kinda sucked, and it’s VERY important not to let yourself automatically associate school with negative emotions like fear and stress, because that will paralyze you down the line when things get more difficult closer to exam season, etc.
2. don’t be afraid to drop
when going to all your new classes, really seriously evaluate your ability to succeed in a class with that time slot/professor/etc. last semester I had a quantitative reasoning class that was part of our core curriculum – the professor was NOT good at their job, did not teach us the material, and frankly showing up to that class was a waste of my time. What i SHOULD have done was DROP THE DAMN CLASS the first week, and taken it the next semester with a better professor.
3. limit other activities at first
your first couple weeks of the new semester, cut back on other activities. I’m really active in political stuff going on around my city, and i’m on a leadership team for an organization that does that kind of stuff. I’ve let the team know that I’m not going to be participating, going to meetings, or ANYTHING for the next two weeks while my semester gets started. The reasons for this are many – it helps you get used to the pace of all your classes without being stressed out by other things, it helps you reorganize your priorities and put school first, and it also helps you build credit with your professors, so down the line if you’re having problems (like ‘oh SHIT i forgot this homework’ or ‘FUCK i don’t understand this project i need an extension’) they’ll be more likely to help you out, because they know you’ve been putting the effort in.
4. try out something new organizationally
if you’re like me, keeping track of assignments is really difficult. I lose papers all the damn time. So this semester I’ve bought one of those accordion file thingies – so I can keep all my papers in one place, while still having them separate and organized. Just remember, the strategy is only one part, but you’re responsible for sticking to it and making it work.
so there ya have it, friends. you’re ready to start this ‘recovery semester’ off with a bang. you can do it, and so can I!
anyone else who starts their second semester on monday? i wanna throw up fml :’)
So lucky to be learning in a beautiful place

Tips For The New Semester
I. Time Management
Use your planner to map out your weeks
Remember to study smarter not harder
Check your emails before each class
If class is cancelled then use the time to study/review for that class
Take a 5 min after each assignment to avoid distractions
Break up projects into smaller parts to avoid doing it all at the last minute
If you feel burned out or unmotivated then do one assignment or use the 5 min rule
II. Studying and Learning
Be present in the moment
Actually make the effort and go to class (biggest goal for me)
Turn off your phone while studying
Write notes on the reading before class and add to notes during class
Study in a place with no distractions
Do your own homework
don’t copy other’s homework answers esp. if you don’t understand the topic
Make practice tests for yourself
Always do the extra credit
Go to the tutoring center if you need help
Talk to your classmates and make study groups
Go to your professor’s office hours for help
III. Treat Yourself
Sleep at least 6 hours every day (2nd most important goal to me)
Don’t cram for tests in one night (causes too much stress)
Find someone you can talk to about stress
Find what motivates you
Go out with friends or family at least once a week
Take some time to stretch, take a walk, workout, or meditate everyday
Read something for fun everyday

Morning Habits Worth Starting (Especially for College)
Give yourself enough time to get ready before you have to leave in the morning. For me this means setting my alarm about an hour before the time that I have to get my foot out the door. Eat a proper breakfast, do a little stretching, figure out your plan for the day. Having a slower paced morning is a lot more relaxing, and you can get your day started correctly.
Drink water first thing. I used to be a pretty heavy coffee drinker in the mornings in high school, but I realized that I could get away with a lot less caffeine if I started my morning off with a nice glass of cold water. You’re probably dehydrated after sleeping and water helps wake you up.
Make your bed. Making your bed is a visual reminder that sleeping time is over and that it’s time to get up! If I have a messy bed, I want to climb in and snuggle back into my blankets. This is especially true in the winters when it’s cold and dark. The movement also helps you wake up, which brings me to my next point:
Move! Your! Body! You don’t necessarily have to run through an entire yoga routine or go for a run (but hey, props to you if you do), but getting some movement in your mornings will help you wake up. I like to stretch a little bit, warm up my joints, maybe loosen up my limbs. It helps to get your blood flowing.
Open your curtains. In the winter it might be kind of dark and depressing where you live, so this isn’t always something recommended. I like to open my curtains when it’s sunny out so I can get some natural light, which helps your circadian rhythm so you wake up better - and fall asleep at night better.
Do something productive before your class begins. If your first class is super early, this might not apply. But I find it tremendously helpful to get something done, whether it be a flash card set, a work out, or a load of laundry, before my first class. It’ll get you into a productive mood for the rest of the day, and even if you aren’t productive for whatever reason, you can go to sleep knowing that at least you got something done that day!
Making the perfect study plan
Exams are getting closer and now is the perfect time to create a solid study plan to get motivated and be productive. Here are some tips to help you making your study plan!
You don’t need a fancy planner. You can just use Excel to create it as you like and it will be more than enough!
Make a list of all the topics you have to study and gather similar subjects in the same category. Then, classify them by priority order.
Estimate the amount of time you’ll need to study each topic. Don’t underestimate it : you have to take all the time you need to understand and memorize, otherwise you’ll end up rushing things up and not being productive enough. I remember adding 1 hour more than I thought I would need so I could have plenty of time to go deeper in the subject without stressing myself out.
Know when you’re the most effective and do the hardest tasks in that moment. Keep the lighter subjects for the rest of the day. When I was doing my first med school year I would always study chemistry and physics in the mornings and the rest in the afternoon and evening !
Plan your breaks and meals. If you want to watch an episode from your favorite TV show, plan it. Your free time is important too! Make to create time for daily activities that fulfill you :)
Plan your delay! Set a day in your planner where you just catch up on everything you’re late on so you don’t get super stressed if your study day didn’t go as planned ! I always use my Sundays as « delay days » haha
If you have enough time, try to plan review sessions of the topics you’ve already seen. When I was studying anatomy I would make review sessions one day a week so I could memorize in the best way possible.
Also, plan a day or half a day to test yourself. Do it early enough to re-adjust your study plan if you feel like you have to spend more time reviewing a certain topic!
And you, what are your “planning habits”? Do you use a planner ?
