is the reason totems only work for steve because they Believe they work, or is there something that happens when they touch one, that the evokers are trying to extract/exploit?

So glad someone asked, I can now talk about my headcanon that 100 people already probably came up with but shhshs-

Totems work for anyone. In game, if you give a mob a Totem and kill it, it will be revived just like Steve would. The reason Totems don't work for Evokers, in my AU at least, is cuz they're not charged.

To charge one, you gotta give it a living sacrifice so it traps their soul inside it. I think this tracks with the constant reoccurrence with soul magic and... soul-adjacent stuff in Vanilla MC and MC Dungeons (soul sand, sculk, all those weapons etc.)

I imagine Raids themselves to not just be for looting but giant sacrifices. For both Totems and just cuz... Illagers love some ritualistic killing!! You will be sacrificed for our glorious crusade against the world!!

However this also makes it so that... during Raids, the Evokers themselves end up the sacrifices...

Both Illager and Villager souls can work. Piglins... maybe as well...? Um- Villagers preferred cuz those guys are strangely prone to life. They have a chance of circumventing death and becoming undead upon a zombie attack. Illagers don't do that...

Are the souls inside the totems still conscious? .... Maybe!

Now if they could somehow trap Steve's 'soul' inside it... but they don't if Steve even has something like that. And it... clearly doesn't seem to be working with what they have but-- who knows! Maybe they'll work it out...
