If you were able to talk to your mother and Moira again what would you say to them?

To be honest I have no idea what I would say to Moira. She has changed since when we were training to be handmaidens. She does not want to escape as much as I though she would. If I did see her again I don't think I would say anything. If anything it would be small talk, not anything important. I would tell her I love her and I missed her. That she was one of the most important people in my life and that I search for her everyday since she almost escaped.I would tell my mother how much I missed her. I want her to know how proud I have always been to have her as my mother. She helped me so much and I regret not talking to her as much, how I didn't keep up with her as well as I should have once Luke and I got married. She deserves better than the colonies.

I have realized why all the restriction put in place bother me so much. It's because I have always been surrounded by strong, independent women who were not afraid to protest what they did not believe in. My mother used to come home from Protests with her friends and talk about the issues they were protesting. From abortion riots to women's right, she wanted everyone to have a choice in their society. Then I had Moira who wanted her right to marry whomever she wanted and always seemed to be going to a protest. I know Moira has decided that being a Jezebel is the best option but I want out of a system that doesn't give me the right to choose how I want to live. I grew up knowing that you should always fight for what you want, and right now I want to have my daughter and husband back. I want to be able to walk around in whatever I want. I want to have a life worth living. This life here, as a handmaiden, it's not worth living, especially not now that Serena Joy knows I've been sneaking around with the Commander, breaking a lot of laws, and going behind her back so soon after she tried to help me. I'm dead already. The Guardians are sure to be on their way here in the black van of theirs. Should I kill myself like Ofglen? I don't know what to do. The last handmaiden killed herself after something similar happened to her, I don't have all the facts but I know the Commander took her to Jezebel's as well and Serena Joy found out. What will happen to me when the Guardians come? I don't even want to think about that. -Offred

I never meant for it to go so far with the Commander. I went along with it in the beginning because it was something different, something exciting in a life so full of grey and boredom. It felt nice to read again, the word ‘Faith’ on the throw pillow and the phrase ‘Nolite te bastardes carborundorum’ carved into the floor was already ingrained in my memory. I knew he let me win the next time we played Scrabble; I couldn’t even remember the last time I had to even think about spelling a word, let along actually spelling it. I felt empowered, a bit more free, as if the world was back to the way it was before. As if we were back to the old normal where my biggest concerns were my daughter and when I could smoke my next cigarette. This feeling was intoxicating. I wanted to feel it more and more and soon I was playing Scrabble with the commander at least three times a week and kissing him afterwards. I thought that if I didn’t do what he said I wouldn’t be able to have this ‘freedom’ so I went along with him when he procured the outfit, the cloak, and the makeup. If I hadn’t of gone with him who knows if I would have ever seen Moira of head a peep about what happened to my mother. -Offred

What is your least favorite part of living in your society?

I do not particularly like how none of the women are allowed to read and how everyday is the exact same. I spend a good portion of my days looking out my window. I can not do much beyond that. Before the Commander and I started playing Scrabble the highlight of my day was the walk with Ofglen to buy food. When I first came to live with the Commander and Serena Joy I explored a new portion of my room everyday to slave off the boredom. So much of my day is empty, the Martha’s do not talk to me often, Serena Joy doesn’t like me, Nick is prohibited from really talking to me, and my conversations with Ofglen are based on what we are allowed to say. Everyday was the exact same and I had nothing to think about except life before. My life with my mom, Moira, Luke, and my little girl. That’s what I hate most, the amount of time I have to morn and covet my life before. The time I have to think of if I had just done something differently everything could have changed. It drives you mad if you dwell on your decisions too much. -Offred
