This is my final narrative piece. Iv e only including minimal text as i wanted to imagery to take control over how the story is perceived and i didn't want to congest the images too much as then it would become cluttered as the designs are very busy already as they are. I like the outcome as the images are very expressive through the marks and lines and also the figure are expressive even through the same clothes are expressions.
Evaluation
In this coursework i set out to include more photography as thats something that i may not of done before and also an artist that i feel helped influence my work was Richard vantielcke. This was because he used a wide range of conceptual photography that i took a real liking to and i wanted to include my interpretation in that as it was really powerful and expressive which is how i wanted my work to be seen as. I chose to take forward his concept within the narrative by doing a similar story line however i then decided to drift by included my own paint designs into it so there isnt a connection to that artist. i liked those outcomes amongst my coursework as i think there was a variety in designs and textures used.
Something that worked well was my book cover as i chose to use etching as a starting point and from that i got a better understanding of working with a different media which creates a different effect and also it produces designs that may not be done on the computer because i showed a variation in the level of ink used so i could have uncontrollable outcomes which may or may not work but in my case did as i though it gave me smoe nice options to take forward for my final book cover. the finished outcome was a good finish and maybe something that wouldnt normally be picked up but its interesting and has a nice indentation which creates a good texture.
Something that didnt work so well was my january zine as i wanted to use the tfl as a starting point and then lead into the politics side of it. as i began to look at differnet artists and also begin experiments the textures and abstract designs that were coming through were good as there was a contrast in the formal government leaders which contrasted with messy paint mark designs which is something that i wanted to take forward as it leads into a metaphor of the issues and leaders are a mess. However the message may not have been clear enough and also there was a nice design and some interesting combinations and marks however it may have been the wrong direct to take with this issue and maybe should of gone down the propanganda route.
The narrative i wanted to have have a variation with things that were directing the story so i chose a character, lego and also the book pages. I wanted to leave myself with different options of ideas to include and take forward. I chose to go with the box man but as it was similar to the original artist i looked art i wanted to mix it up and create my own idea and interpretation. i created paint pages to experiment with and my first one was really effective and one of my favourite outcomes i made and from there i wanted to slect images that could create a story and then take them forward to a similar standard and create a short story but expressive designs and also minimal text as i dont want to clutter the designs.
My editorial was based on the theme of TFL as its something everyone can relate to so its always topical and relevant to the time era. I wanted to show facts and figures that people may not know so it would interest peopel and also intruige people. I wanted to experiment with different lines to show routes and direction which i feel wroked well and was interesting on my designs. Furthermore i wanted to use images relevant to the theme and experiment with things with texture that is connected to the TFL.
Something that i would change would be the January zine and create a more propaganda design and include my primary images more and use that idea to have clearer outcomes that are effective and also of a better quality. Overall my designs had a consitency through and something that i used well was primary images and then using a veriation of my textures creating good outcomes that represent my themes and purpose well.
Box Man Narrative
I wanted to create some textures and design to use to display the story of the box more expressive and experimental and i wanted to include a variety of different colours to show the story that is going through. I wanted to have bursts of colour to show conflict and friction which is being felt within the narrative and the range of colours and strokes help improve the design and how well the images work.
Final Piece
I wanted to do some lego experiments with my designs to see how that story would develop and whether it was the right direction in order to get the best outcome. I went for a bold expressive design that would contrast with the simple layout design and be something that stands out and shows both well.
Danbo
Subjective - I chose to look at Danbo’s figures as they are on a small scale but yet effective. The facial features are minimal but effective as its simple shapes yet expressive emotions. The figures have been photo into different landscapes and situations which is effective as shows a journey that they have made. Also we can get a sense of scaling through the photos. Some images show the figures doing different activities and to accompany that they show different accessories and items that go with the figures scaling and the images environment.
Structural - The photography all show the figures and a variation of facial expressions, and the environment changes. The environment they use everyday situations and places where we have access to and all encountered. Often the figure has a close up to show off the detail in the face and the background situation shows minimal detail, just show the surroundings and whats going on in the picture.
cultural - The figures are constructed of delivery boxes that are used to this date, however put on a miniature scale, but still include the detail of the boxes which is effective as there can be a immediate connection to present companies today. The situations encountered are modern and the features seen in the surroundings are modern as some involve technology used to date. All of the outcomes are produced by high quality photos and these no real variation to technique or how the outcome is presented to us.
post modern - There is a lot of open spaces in the photo which allows us to appreciate how big the world actually is, and by using these figures we lose a sense of scaling as to how we are and the objects around us. As we are only miniature in the scale of the universe the photos show how big our surroundings are to us.
I like the figure as there is a lot of detail involved so the scale can be hidden up against big objects on a small scale. The figures can easily moved around different spaces and experimented with different spaces. The detail in the face can be used effectively and a lot to show emotion through a character and also the boxes can represent something thats travelling around adventuring.
Paul Smith Interpretation
These are my Paul Smith interpretations. I chose to stick to his theme of representing himself in his work but i liked the element of animals doing the same job, and my dog circled his territory well so i though the image would come out nice as there would be a variation of positions and shapes. I like working with form of narrative as in just one image its very expressive of what the story is being told and also using my dog i didn't have a real control over the outcome i could get so the story became more natural and un influenced. This technique is effective in narration there is a progression around the space that can be seen and it shows a journey that the viewers can interpret for themselves.
Slinkachu
I decided to look at Slinkachu's work because its really effective based on the scale used and also its a simple technique that has come across really effective because of the detail in the figures which make it a adventurous design. I like the areas the photos are taken in because the scenery really works with the message being displayed through the figures but also there is a connection to what is going on in the picture. The images have been placed so there is a element that we don't pay attention to every little detail because in the further away images its unclear as to what the items are but with a close up it shows a real story and effective photography skills.
There is a variation in the artists photography as they are trying to show off the figures but also through other images reflect the surroundings and how such a small story doesn't mean anything in a wide environment with so much more things going on. Also i believe that each image is displaying a metaphor through the message the photo is creating. Each figure is taking out a process and something that is either skilful or necessary to keep the image the way it is. Through the scale of the figures i feel the photographs are to make up realise the world around us and the things people do that go unappreciated.
The figures are very outdate style, whereas the situations are not. The figures may not necessarily be used as toy due to the advance in technology and what is in date at the moment, these sort of figures may go unnoticed. The environment is very modern and whats being expressed in the figures may also be modern with what they are doing.
The way the figures are in a mould there is a abstractive element as we would interpret faces to be clean and smooth whereas the plastic is bumpy and rough with could be to relate the photos to represent something else in the plant that it alive. For example toy story bringing live to the things around us. The photographer could perhaps believing that there are things on a smaller scale that are real just remain unnoticed because we don't always look where nothing is.
The stories in the images i really like and how Slinkachu has displayed them really works. I like the places chosen to photo as some involve people so we can compare and contrast but also see how people don't actually see whats going on around us.
