hgg's worldbuilding is always so thoughtful chapter 285 illustrates that beautifully. what's particularly fascinating to me about this comment and aiden's demeanor in general is how pervasive dehumanization is. he cares so much for phill and his safety, and yet, his first instinct upon confession is to treat him effectively like a zoo animal. empathy and a lack thereof play such a big part in immortal days; it's real interesting to see the grip it has on phill and his relationships.

the recent trend to hate on argentina and to characterize doing so as woke has allowed many first worlders to show their true colors. as soon as you all seem to get the 'green light' that hating on a third world country is acceptable you stop hiding your disdain and xenophobia. this and the "calling ice" jokes show you don't actually give two shits about racism or cheating or whatever, you just want a socially acceptable way to hate on latin americans
