“Oh, sh…oot,” Bucky let out as it became apparent that the lodgings he’d booked were not as accommodating as he’d expected.
The boys ran into the small cabin, bouncing all over the place and nearly knocking over and busting multiple decorations that might’ve been heirlooms. Sarah’s alarm skyrocketed. “Hey! Calm down!” she demanded. “There’s stuff in here that doesn’t belong to us, alright?”
“Alright,” they agreed together, slowing down slightly as they flopped onto the bed.
“Maybe the couch is a pull out?” Bucky said softly.
“Wait,” Sarah began, raising an eyebrow. “Do you mean that there’s only one bed?”
“Maybe,” Bucky said soberly.
Sarah found herself laughing before she could stop herself. Poor Bucky, she thought. He’d planned this whole trip on his own. He charted the course, picked the dates and made arrangements for the boat, and booked the cabin.
She took the groceries they’d brought along to the very small kitchenette and started to stuff things away. Bucky groaned from across the room. “This couch is just a couch,” he said.
“Well, the boys can sleep on the couch anyway, can’t they?” asked Sarah.
“Nah, look at this thing,” Bucky replied. “It’s too small for both of them.”
“I’ll take the floor,” said Cass.
“C’mon now,” Bucky began. “No, you three get this enormous bed and I’ll take the couch. Or the floor maybe…”
Their eyes met and he shrugged, exasperated. “I want you guys to have a good time. That includes a good night’s sleep. So we can do some good hiking in the morning, you know.”
“You should have a good time, too,” she said softly.
“It’s fine,” he assured her. “I used to sleep on the floor all the time.”
“Haven’t you softened up?”
He shrugged. “I guess… maybe.”
Sarah woke up in the night to Bucky groaning and standing to go somewhere. “Buck?” she whispered quietly.
“Oh,” he breathed, turning to look at her. “Sorry… Did I wake you up?”
“Yes, but it’s fine,” she said, considering getting out of bed to talk but changing her mind when she realized how cold it was. “Couldn’t sleep?” she asked.
He shook his head. “Too cold.” Then he smiled and gestured towards Cass on the couch. “Didn’t stop him, though.”
Cass barely had a blanket. She smiled. “He’s always been like this.” She sighed. “What if we slept together on the floor?”
“No, Sarah, c’mon,” he countered. “Your back would never let you–”
“Okay, then come get in with me to warm up.”
He considered for a moment, she scooted into the middle and held the bedclothes up for him. He sighed, defeated, and smiled, cozying up to her, little spoon. He hummed happily and they fell asleep.
