Thank god they had friends with a pool. The weather had become just plain unbearable and with all of the baby preparations, they weren’t exactly in a place to keep the air conditioning on all the time. So a pool party was very much in order and thankfully she wasn’t showing too bad just yet, at least little enough to wear her old bathing suits.

She was enjoying a drink by the pool, lemonade instead of the cheap beer everybody else had. She sighed and casually dipped a toe in the pool, not noticing her boyfriend walking up behind her. She screamed as she was bumped accidentally or not, failing in the pool for a second to catch her bearings. “Alex! What the hell!”

Godammit it was fucking hot. Alex ran his fingers in his hair, chlorinated water from his swim earlier slicking it back. Smiling as one of his friends passed by he picked up his beer, blue eyes shifting to his girlfriend standing near the edge of the water. 

It didn't take awhile for the idea to come up. Getting to his feet, Alex took a swig of the beer walking towards the pool. There was a grin on his face even before he touched her, growing as Tink fell into the water. "Oops, I didn't know it was you Tink."

Change of Plans

One shot. And she knew, she would have done the same thing. That didn’t stop her from almost keeling over. 

"Jesus, Alex, couldn’t you have hit his leg—?" She ran over and took the phone from the man, ending the call with the press of one gloved finger. The blood flooded from his head, and it was so much darker than she’d ever thought. It didn’t create a red river on the carpet, but a black one. She wanted to throw up.

Instead, she stood up, throwing a few more items from what she assumed what his wife’s jewelry box into her pockets before turning back to Alex. Already, she could feel her knees starting to weaken. “We’ve got to get out of here.”

He didn't reply, staring at the body a little bit longer. Why didn't he feel anything? His eyes darted around for a bit, mind taking a few seconds to make plans tying up any loose ends. Backing away he pulled a few more things from dressers and shelves. Thank God they were wearing gloves. 

"I don't think there's anything left pointing this back to us," back tracking Alex followed his same footsteps to the rooms they'd visited, careful but quickly, police sirens already sounding in the back of his mind. "Okay, we gotta go let's go." Feeling Daisy in tow he rushes out of the house, leaving everything as he'd left it save for the bloody, lifeless body on the floor.

"I can’t," he admitted, already working on climbing up from his place at the base of her window. He’d done this before, but now he wanted to be extra sneaky. He didn’t want her parents to find him again. He’d never live it down. 

As he got his footing on the shingles, he quietly made his way to her. “Let’s do something so fucking stupid, come on,” he said, pressing a kiss to her lips. “Get out of your window, come back with me. Let’s get out of here.”

She hated the build up of adrenaline and fear that filled her veins as he began to climb. This was only going to get them into more trouble. Not that she cared much of defying her parents, that was one of the perks of being with him, she was more worried about what would happen to him if they were find out. 

Even with the worries and warning signs flooding her mind she accepted the kiss, melting in to it even before the night air chilled her lips as he pulled away. Why was he always able to do this to her. She shouldn't had even opened the window. The one act already signed her name on the dotted line to the contract of whatever plan Seth hand made up for them in his mind. 

She was stuck.

           The boy had effectively gotten his attention now. He'd gotten enough contacts and had a free moment. Alex looked the boy up and down before lowering his hands. >

"Hey look no need to get frantic on me." Alex gave him a sly smile, "So is there a reason you were staring at me?"

Hattie chuckled slightly at his compliment about her being beautiful and shook her head. Her face was covered in stitches and there was a large set over her chest. If her stomach was to be shown it would have shown the scar forming along her stomach from the ruptured spleen. Her leg was in plaster and luckily her hands and arms were not but one arm was in a sling from her broken collarbone. No piano for her for a while. 

She looked over at him and reached up with her good arm.  "I mean you look pretty handsome yourself." She told him with a weak smile. She pushed her self up and leant over to press a kiss to his cheek.  "I’m sorry for shouting at you." She whispered and moved so she could rest her head on his arm slightly.  "Do you know if they’ve called my parents?" She asked quietly. A nurse came in at that point to change her IV.  "They said they’re out of state. Something about your brother looking at college’s." Hattie sighed and sunk into her pillows.  "Henry is going to college this year…they won’t be back for a while and I suspect they arn’t rushing home." She reached for Alex’s hand again and sighed.

"Yeah they say neck braces are the new black," he smiled more, cheeks raising a little from the foam collar they rested on. Alex didn't rest in content for long, slight panic seeping into his chest at the sight of Hattie's movement. "You really should keep still so you don't hurt yourself even more. Though he accepted the blessing of her lips on his cheek it was his fault she was in here and he didn't want it to be his fault that she got worse. Still he didn't object much to the presence of her head on him. 

"I actually don't know," he didn't feel like talking about her parents. He was sure that they didn't give as much of a crap as they needed to and Hattie didn't need anything bringing her down. Alex clutched his girls hand, hoping to take some of the pain and disappointment away. "They call them soon don't worry about it alright. Just relax and focus on getting better."

She’d seen it before. In herself, in friends, in strangers. Never had she ever seen it in a lover.

Opiates. Narcotics. Percocet, Percodan, OxyContin, Vicodin, Lorcet, Lortab, Demerol— she didn’t know the extent, nor did she really even want to. It could have been any one of the aforementioned drugs, possibly more. He hid his stash well, in a shoe box inside the drawer of his bedside table. She should have noticed sooner. When he started taking a glass of water to bed with him, rolling onto his side so she couldn’t see, rummaging around in his drawers before taking a drink. “Vitamins,” was his excuse every time.

She’d watched it when it was abuse, but she let it go because she wouldn’t want him to say anything about her club drugs. But now it was dependence, verging on addiction, and that’s where it started to get scary. When he needed them, it was like he had the flu, sweating and shivering, dazed and confused. But when he took them, he slept for hours and hours, sometimes he would behave irrationally, like he’d smoked a fuckton of weed. His pupils were always tiny when she would look, and he would sometimes vomit, but he would tell her that he felt fine, great even. And what had she done? Stood back and watched. 

Not anymore.

When he rolled over this night, she reached to grab his forearm. “Don’t. Please, don’t.”

There were always the warnings. Cautions surrounding pain killers and other prescription drugs. But that wasn't going to be him. He wasn't going down the road of needing. All he needed was her. There wasn't room for anything else. When the crutches left and the orange container filled of tiny white pills stayed he didn't think anything of it. It had become routine. 

One every 4 hours, just to keep the pain away. 2 in the morning just in case. Maybe 3 sometime during the afternoon just to be sure. He didn't need them. He could put them away if he needed to. But the pain. He needed to stay away from the pain. 

It wasn't until he'd left them at home, and he felt the shivers, the sweating the headaches, the literal. discomfort. everywhere. that he'd accepted the crutch. 

Checking out for the night he almost snatched his arm away. But then her voice. Alex turned back to her. Bec. She was supposed to be your only drug remember. "Don't what?"

"What the actual fuck Seth," Hayley's head stuck out of the window, arms perched on it's edge, her hands gripping it's sill tightly. If their parents woke up they were both going to be dead. Her in the form of being sent to some type of boarding school and him being picked up by the cops after her parents dialed 911. 

Still, she couldn't help the slip of a smile looking down at the shaggy haired boy. Looking back into her room she checked the open doorway for any sign of her parents, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Staring back into the dark night, the privileged girl looks down at him, "Go home Seth."

Change of Plans

They couldn't be caught. That's the thought that replayed over and over. No matter what they couldn't be caught, they had to get out alive, they had to make it. But then everything was happening too fast. The phone was in his hand. He was dialing. The phone was next to his ear and a voice was droning on the other end. 

The seconds in between he glanced at Daisy. Her face, the face that he'd known for so long was unreadable. He needed to do something. His hand moved before he even thought about it. The movies never show how simple it is. Killing a person. There was the loud blare from the gun, then the buzz of the bullet then finally a crack. 

The phone dropped first, the body following with blood leaking out of the hole in the mans head. There was supposed to be more emotion, even regret in seeing their neighbors lifeless body. But Alex only felt relief. They wouldn't be caught.

Hattie’s fosters had apparently gone out of town without telling her so she would have no one to support her for three days. It didn’t bother her too much. She liked being independent. But it would sure be nice to be covered in love and affection at that moment.

She came to as they wheeled Alex in and her hand wanted to go for his. "Am I allowed to hold your hand now? She asked with a weak laugh and reached for it slowly. She brushed her thumb over the back of it and closed her eyes. Like Alex she couldn’t move her head just in case she had hurt it seriously so all she could do was stare ahead and hope he would respond with a word other than sorry. "It’s fine." She mumbled. It wasn’t and she still felt dizzy and in pain but she wasn’t one to moan about pain.

He frowned watching her, easing up a little at her hand thumb against his hand. There she was, being strong, trying to keep herself together in the hardest moments. "You don't have to be strong for me Hattie," he intertwined their fingers smiling a little. "It's amazing how you look beautiful despite all of this." 

Alex struggled to make the atmosphere a little lighter. They both looked like shit. And he certainly felt like a whole bunch of shit. But being that there was a high probability that her parents wont show, he needed to be there.

When the second car hit Hattie watched as Alex was thrown towards her. She tried to cushion his blow but it only hurt her more. She slipped into unconsciousness quickly.

When she woke she was in a separate room from Alex and she had a tube helping her to breath. Doctors and nurses were tending to her as she woke and then she heard him. He was screaming her name but all she could do was groan. She heard the words ‘sedate them’ and soon she was under again and after 3 hours of surgery she had a reinflated lung, a cast on her leg and bruises all over her body.

She was brought round slowly and instantly asked for him. The nurse sighed and moved to the next room. "She’s asking for him. Take him in."

They wouldn’t tell him where she was. Not until he settled down. But fearful that she might be dead. That he would never see her again. Alex did everything but. After unsuccessful attempts to stop his screaming and to restrain him, needle met with is IV doing the job for him. 

He wasn’t as bad off as she was. Whiplash, a broken arm and collarbone and a hell of a lot of bruises. Luckily the car that hit his side wasn’t going full speed. Seeing the incoming accident he driver hit the breaks and burnt the fuck out of the tires. It could’ve been worse. For him, the one who got them into this, it could’ve been worse. For her their car was pressing 65 mph and was hit by a car going 35. She didn’t get simple casts. She got 3 hours of people cutting into her and the promise of being a few heartbeats away from a flat-line. 

When they would finally let him see her, he was crying. He couldn’t move his head or neck so they put him as close as he could be facing her. Tears falling on his lips, Alex called out her name apologizing between every uttered word. 

"I’m so sorry. Oh god I’m so sorry Hattie."

"Really," God he couldn't believe he was saying this. How was this happening? He was okay. "I love you." That felt to amazing.
