        uma’s not very good at playing nice,     can you blame her,      she’s the daughter of ursula and if that’s not bad enough,     she grew up on the isle,      stripped of all magic and belonging.      but hey      —-       AT      LEAST       SHE’S       TRYING      TO      MAKE       AN      EFFORT.       she doesn’t really have much of a choice anymore,     after all she’s no longer stranded on the isle.         "       so you like basketball,     that’s cool.      “       with a nonchalant roll of the shoulders and a small smile tugging at glossed lips she continues.      “      i prefer to fence,      requires a lot more skill.       “       playing nice sure lasted long.

        he starts to nod at her words, opening his mouth to confirm     &     maybe offer to ask if she would like to play a game, but stops at the rest of her statement. a beat passes, before he lets his usual smile take its place, nodding again.     “     fencing, that’s pretty cool ! i’ve never actually known anyone who could. is it fun ?      ”      troy’s words come out maybe a little too enthusiastic, a little to eager to bring out his natural kindess, but it’s what he’s used to.

        he blinks, considering her words for a moment or two, before nodding his head in agreement, lips tilted down.        “      yeah, you got a point there   ---   as much as they tell us its up to us, they’re still going to try   &   pull us another way, right ?      ”

“ somehow, i think you might be right about that. ”   he laughs a little, shaking his head and dusting himself off as he clambers up from the dirt.  chad is still better at tourney than jay is, no matter what anyone says or thinks, and he’s got jay at a distant disadvantage with their respective statuses alone.   “ and hey!  nothing really wounded but my pride, right? ” 

         troy laughs a little too, offering a friendly pat on the shoulder once jay gets up.     “     hey, that’s the spirit.     ”     he laughs again, shaking his head.     “     besides, if it helps any, you were doing really good out there.     ”     he says, smiling brightly at the other.

         “     still already happened, sharpay, but i love the school spirit.     ”

HE WANTS TO THINK THAT  he’ll find a couple clubs to join, but upon looking at the board, he feels a little let-down. maybe glee clubs are a northern thing. mike should’ve known not every school has one, even though it seemed every school around lima had one, and he could ask, but he’s not about to out himself like that, especially with their NATIONALS FLOP circulating around the internet.

        ‘‘ my dad got a new job higher up and they moved him down here. which sucks            for me because, you know, senior year in a new place is going to be rough. i’ll keep            a look-out for those theater sign-ups, though. you guys have a football team, right ?             hope i’m not too late for those try-outs. ’’

        “     ---   oh, man, that’s rough, showing up somewhere new for your last year.      ”      his usual, seemingly permanent grin falls a little, more toward a frown,     &     he turns to face mike.      “     but uh, hey, if you want, come sit with me     &     my friends at lunch today. you’re cool. they’ll like you. won’t be hard to miss us either, we’ll have one of the bigger tables.      ”

      “      but, anyway, theater     &     football huh ? cool, but don’t say it too loud. people hear get kinda crazy with that.      ”     he says it as seriously as he can, though the new smile tugging at his lips probably gives the joke away.     “     darbus should have theater signups in a few weeks, make sure you show up on time for those. with football, i’m not sure what their schedule is like, but our basketball coach is close with the football coach, so if you want, i can ask around for you.     ”     

        a pause.      “     don’t take it the wrong way, but i wouldn’t have guessed football. i would have said like   ---   baseball or soccer or something. maybe basketball.     ”
