primarily due to the size [and weight] of the model, it needed to be either taken apart + kept or thrown away. Reminding myself the concept of the model [shelter], i decided to take the model apart and promote the final article as a buildable model. My thinking became the mass production of the model would allow the message to spread further and be seen by more people over possibly a greater period of time. and so, ‘the shelter - model of contemplation’ was borne.

[i have annoyingly misplaced a series of photos between this post + the last. there was lots of on-the-spot edits throughout this phase too including the adjustable ‘bolt’ legs [along the black platform] and the actual mechanism itself. alas].

installing various components. firstly drill aluminium footings + secure with pop-rivets. continue attaching laser cut sprayed truss + brackets to the model. looking at the bottom picture, i think a good lesson for next time would be to cast the both components of the base at the same time to avoid the color variation + joining crease. the epoxy has given the mould a smooth almost plastic appearance + feel making it a bit of a spin-out to touch.

good for the night.

a new base was formed today using rapid-set concrete [1.75 bags, dryish mix] for the project. tmrw im hoping to apply the epoxy coats to match the already constructed ‘ramp/contour’ piece. to the right of the image, are the folded aluminium ‘footings’ with the drill-holes completed for the pop-rivets to come. the aluminium was folded using a sheet-metal bending press + hand/plier folds with some hammer work to flatten the surfaces. to the left foreground is the contour piece drying. and behind are the previous moulds used in the project.

the concrete mould with the second layer of epoxy applied + drying. unfortunately the filler along the bottom edge was not entirely dry when i began sanding which resulted in some of the bog falling away. it does however add to the roughness of the piece which may hopefully aid the contrast between the smooth, plastic-y, acrylic trusses + platforms to come..

feeling emboldened by using a new/old technique with the mould, i ditched the laser-cut ‘footings’ and decided to fabricate some supports using aluminium strips. again moving beyond glue, i wanted a mechanical fastening to enhance + further relate to the project concept. the above image shows a fixing-test i conducted using pop-rivets. happy with the sturdiness of the material and connection, the decision was made to move ahead.

the automotive bog experiment is also displayed on this sample piece of ‘scrap’ concrete. if time had permitted for extra sanding, the bog on the surface would have been removed. it was thought with a final coat of sealer [still to come] the remaining bog in the crevices may have appeared like aggregate in a polished concrete floor. definitely something to remember for next time..

once popped from the acrylic mould, the concrete was filled along the base-edge using a similar colour exterior masonry ploy-filler. automotive bog was tested and was thought about as a possible simulation for aggregate, however the post-filling sanding process was deemed to take up time i just didn't have at this stage.

and so.. knowing i wanted a material in which i would be able to more easily sculpt a smooth surface, i ditched the foam mould and settled upon a malleable mix of concrete..

the foam mould was detached from the vac’d acrylic [background]. the acrylic mould was flipped and filled with rapid-set cement [foreground]. the acrylic mould, under the strain of holding in the concrete, got a slight ‘muffin-top’ so was propped using a timber paling [middlegound].

the initial process was to construct a foam-mould for the vac forming process. having spent several hours unsuccessfully carving [and ruining] giant blocks of foam with the heat-wire cutter, the CNC approach was utilised.. awesome, simple process capable of eliminating time-spent and ‘cutting’ neatness/outcomes.

67 minutes total ‘cutting/milling time’.
