Ponyboy being unable to view himself as a hero because he thinks he started the fire in the first place, so he only saved those kids from the endangerment he caused.

Ponyboy feeling torturous guilt for running into that church because that’s what got Johnny and then Dally killed.

Ponyboy sometimes secretly wishing he hadn’t rescued those kids because then Johnny and Dally would still be alive. Maybe Johnny thought those kids’ lives were worth more than his, but to Pony, their lives aren’t worth more than Johnny’s.

Ponyboy wanting to crawl out of his skin every time someone calls him a hero. Ponyboy snapping one day, lashing out at the latest person to use that word, because he’s not a hero, he’s a murderer.

Ponyboy being unable to acknowledge his act of bravery as such, because it had such terrible fallout. Ponyboy feeling like the harder he tries not to hurt people, the more he fails.

Soft hearted, sensitive Ponyboy who couldn’t even shoot animals on his hunting trips, feeling responsible for two different brutal, agonizing deaths of two different friends, and the terror and near death of a bunch of innocent kids.
