Final Assignment

My piece incorporates elements of cubism. It does so through the geometric shapes that make up the background. Like our cubism assignment, I tried to go beyond the basic geometric shapes and use unique and imaginative shapes.

My piece also incorporates surrealism. This is through the mermaid that is the focal point of the canvas. Mermaids are imaginative and surreal creatures that do not actually exist, which aligns with the surrealism art style.

Lastly, my piece incorporates aspects of abstract expressionism. I used abstract scribbles and line work in order to fill the rest of the background of the piece, and get rid of excess white space. I free drew the lines, and used whatever color I felt like, not necessarily following a certain color scheme or pattern, which aligns with abstract expressionism art style.

I love the mermaid and how it is the focal point of your piece. I think that the piece flows well together and you incorporated abstract expressionism well into getting rid of the white space and it really added to the piece as well. Good job!

Final

For my artwork I made a background using paint on a canvas. I was inspired by the cubism unit when creating the background. I used familiar shapes like circles, squares, triangles etc and then also incorporated made up abstract shapes in all different colors.

In the next part of this artwork, I was inspired by the unit on abstract expressionism. I wanted to use a different medium so instead of paint I used a fine point marker for this step. I made abstract shapes and lines to add to the canvas. After finishing with the marker, I went back to paint and used the technique of splattering. The last material I used for this part was sticker gems to add to the abstract of the piece.

In the last part of my piece, I created a character inspired by my work from the surrealism movement. This character is similar to that of Frank from this unit. I used paint to create him and marker to add his facial features.

Lily, I really like this piece! I like how you were free with it and added a bunch of different shapes, it makes the piece pop! I also like the character that you added as well, Frank is the main focal point of this painting. I am obsessed with the gems that you added as well!! Good job.

Final

The first movement that I incorporated into my piece is futurism. I used inspiration from the futurism movement to draw my background. Since futurism pieces are super high energy, I wanted to incorporate different colors (green, purple, blue). Also, there is no pattern with the colors. Instead, they were drawn in randomly to fully capture the chaotic feel that futurism brings.

The next movement that I incorporated into my piece is surrealism. Surrealism is quirky, weird, and fun. Surrealists often use objects that contrast each other, so I thought it would be fun to paste human features on a clock and add a cowboy hat on top. Furthermore, pieces of art in the surrealist are often symbols to represent different things. By pasting a face on a clock, it can represent the human obsession with time and how time dictates our lives.

The last movement that I incorporated into my artwork is abstract expressionism. A main characteristic of abstract impressionism is the "All-Over Composition," meaning that artwork does not need to be confined into specific shapes. To add to the background, I cut and drew out a bunch of unique shapes of different colors from magazines and construction paper.

I love your background!! It really makes the piece pop with the different shapes and colours. I like how you added the facial features and top hat to the clock, it really brings the piece to life! I like how you added in your writing that abstract impressionism is the "All-Over Composition", and so you cut out shapes to put them all over the piece. Good job Brooke!!

I incorporated Formal Elements, Abstract Expressionism, and the Renaissance for my final piece.

For formal elements, I split my page in half. On the top half I did cool colours and on the bottom half warm colours. Using the dog food cutout, I incorporated an "S" shape into my piece.

When implementing abstract expressionism in my piece. I added a bunch of different cut-outs and quotes to make the page pop. I just flipped through magazines that I had leftover and added whatever I felt like, and made it.

Lastly, I used the Renaissance in my piece. I decided to add it to the side of my page so there wasn't really a main point to the piece. I found pieces of human facial features and then added my own to the other side of the face.

Abstract Expressionism

I first took a toilet paper roll and decided to make the body of my puppet. I used a straw and put it through the roll to make the arms. For the legs, I used a piece of paper and glued it to the roll. I then cut out a face and some clothes and put them on the roll as well.

The name of my puppet is Owen. Owen is a fun and adventurous guy who loves to dance every once in a while even though he has no rhythm. Owen has a large collection of striped shirts and vibes with Spanish pop music. Owen loves to go to the beach, soak up the sun and get a tan. As you can see in the video, he is being burnt by the sun and trying to run away!

I chose the phrase "brain boosters" to describe my relationship with technology as a child. This is because I was able to use it as a source of entertainment and use it to "boost my brain". Growing up, I did not get a phone until the 9th grade, but I would watch TV, listen to music, go on the computer to play games and watch videos.
