ARTH-322 Breakthrough Contemporary Artists

This artwork was inspired by one of my favorite things — sunsets. I always take pictures of sunsets because of their uniqueness and beauty. I like sunsets because they represent a new day and new beginnings. The sun always rises, meaning there is always a new day ahead. So, I figured I should paint one to be able to hang up on my wall.

The two art history lessons that inspired my artwork are Formal Elements and Viewing Art. Formal Elements inspired this piece of work because of the orderly & chaotic combo that this lesson presented. The disordered branches represent the chaos aspect of the painting. The sun and the sunset represent order, as the different colors of the sunset all blend and the sun is centered. I also was inspired by the Viewing Art lesson. As I was viewing art throughout this lesson, I saw Bob Ross and his painting of trees, a mountain, and a body of water. The nature in this lesson inspired me to create a sunset and trees. Overall, this was a very fun piece of art to create that I will cherish forever.

ARTH-322 NYC 1980s

I collaborated with some friends in class to create a piece of art inspired by Keith Haring’s aesthetic. Our design was inspired by peace, love, and unity. We drew peace signs to symbolize peace, hearts to symbolize love, and people to symbolize unity. On top of everything, we drew an Earth with the word “LOVE” to emphasize that we are all on this planet together and we should all love and respect each other. This was very inspired by Keith Haring’s pieces of art, as he often portrayed people hugging, holding each other, and supporting each other. Also, he celebrates love, peace, and harmony which we captured through peace signs, hearts, and people embracing each other. Overall, this was a super fun piece to make with my friends and it brought us together.

ARTH-322 Earth Art

For my Earth Art assignment this week, I started by making a triangle out of branches. My triangle is an equilateral triangle with 3 sides of the same length. Triangles were used in Ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians. The Egyptians used triangles, especially right triangles, when constructing pyramids. Triangles helped to ensure proper angles and measurements. Triangles were also used by the Babylonians, who utilized right triangles to divide property into sections.

Triangles have been used in music, engineering, mathematics, and sport formations. They are seen in every aspect of life. To add to my triangle, I planted a stick in the center with leaves stuck onto the stick. In each of the three corners, I planted small twigs, with a leave stuck onto each twig. I also put stones in between each twig. Since my triangle is an equilateral triangle, I wanted to keep balance on each side/corner of the triangle. This was a fun assignment to create shapes in nature and get creative.

ARTH-322 Feminism

I chose a beauty advertisement that stated “A Firm and Famous Weekend.” The ad revealed a variety of skin firming lotions that are designed to decrease wrinkles. This saying implies that firming your skin will make you look so good that you will have a “famous” weekend. I decided to respond to the saying with a sarcastic piece of text stating “ready to go.” This was meant to be sarcastic to criticize the fact that the beauty industry places such harsh expectations on women who are naturally aging. Wrinkles, imperfections, and other blemishes are completely normal but this industry makes people feel ugly for not conforming to societal standards. To emphasize the sarcasm from my saying, I added a variety of different people and objects that appear “ready to go,” confident and famous. Overall, I enjoyed using sarcasm to mock the harsh beauty standards that women face daily.

ARTH-322 Minimalism

For my minimalist piece, I used a glass cup, post-it notes, and the flashlight on my phone. To take the picture, I used my iPad. I covered my phone flashlight with 4 different colored post-it notes and projected the light through the bottom of the cup and onto my wall. I love how each post-it note color created a unique and vibrant ring on the wall. This was such a fun piece of art to create!!

ARTH-322 Arte Povera

For my Arte Povera assignment, I created a flower-themed inspired checker board. The black squares are cut from my Nespresso box. The triangle “pieces” are pieces of a paper plate that I cut out and colored. The small blue flowers are also cut out from the design on the paper plate. I then drew in different colored flowers in the background to continue the flower theme. This was a fun assignment to transform “garbage” into a creative piece of art.

ARTH-322: Pop Art

For my products, I chose makeup products. Over history, people have used makeup in different ways. For instance, in Ancient Egypt, eyeliner was used to protect people from evil spirits. Makeup allows people to express themselves in different in ways and feel confident in themselves. The beauty and personal care industry is projected to reach around $677.2 billion in 2025. Every day makeup products can range from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars. In my opinion, makeup can be very overpriced. Due to social media advertising and celebrity endorsements, many people want to buy the most expensive and “elite” products. However, in my opinion, much of the “off brand” products are the same quality as the name brand products. One of my favorite (more affordable) brands is Elf.

ARTH-322 Midterm

I had a really great time creating both the digital abstract piece and the canvas abstract piece. My goal was to create a fun piece with lots of colors and shapes. I felt more in control creating the canvas abstract piece because I had physical control of my notebook, pencils/markers, and supplies. I liked being able to grab different materials and see everything in front of me. I felt I had less control with the digital piece because the stylus and app I used (Notability) were very touchy and tedious. Also, switching between colors was much more of a process digitally, whereas in person I just grabbed a different pencil.

I appreciate that digital creating is very convenient. I can bring my iPad, phone or computer anywhere and create a piece of art. I also like how digital creating allows you to gather many different sources of media from the web and put them together in an instant. I appreciate the process of working with my hands. I like grabbing materials, cutting pictures out, gluing pictures down, etc. It’s very satisfying seeing the physical work you put in come together. I also appreciate working with my hands because I can access materials without the assistance of an electronic device.

ARTH-322: Your Art Voice

Both of these artists put the heads of animals on human bodies and did fun backgrounds that incorporated wavy lines. I liked how both of their pieces of art were abstract and caught my eye. My piece took aspects of both of the pieces of art. From Tori's art, I took the idea of the animal head on a human body, as well as the sophisticated look that her figure had. This inspired the cat in my artwork. From eeylon's artwork, I was also inspired by the animal head on the human body so I continued this theme throughout my artwork. I also was inspired by the blue images on the side of eeylon's artwork, which reminded me of space. This is why I created a space-themed background with stars, patterns, and chaos.

Viewing Art Assignment

For my artwork this week, I took my inspiration from the album “Comfort in Chaos” by John Summit. My favourite song from this album is Palm of my Hands. I decided to use this album as it has many different elements, colours and concepts. With the “chaos” I thought I would be able to find different aspects in magazines and piece it together to replicate elements from the original album cover.

When creating this piece of art, I tried to incorporate all aspects of the cover, including the colours and ideas. Incorporating blue, orange, red, pink, purple, etc. As well as finding a sun and a human figure for the centre of the art. In the original album there is a snake that wraps around in an Infiniti symbol, although I could not find an exact replica, I was able to find a snake which I added to the bottom of the circle.

For this first assignment I took inspiration from Tyler The Creator and his Flower Boy album. The sunset sky and flowers stuck out to me when looking for inspiration. My favorite song from this album is See You Again. I enjoyed creating a fun colorful sky, sunflowers, and finding fun magazine pieces to make this piece more unique.

ARTH-322 Formal Elements

For my complimentary colors, I chose blue and orange for the background. My goal for the outfit was to create a super fun, bold, and random look. Since the Super Bowl is this weekend, I went with the torso of a football player. For the pants, I chose snickers bars because snickers are one of my favorite candy. I did deviled eggs for the shoes to stick with the food theme. For the arm sleeves, I chose branches because they resembled the person waving.

ARTH-322: Viewing Art

Attendance Prompt:

This picture is inspired by the album "F-1 Trillion" by Post Malone. My favorite song from this album is "Pour Me A Drink." Post Malone has always been one of my favorite artists and this album cover is very unique to me. As seen above, the album cover features a car that is nose-down in a body of water. There are mountains and a clear sky in the background behind the water.

To represent the car, I included an image of a man at the top of a set of stairs looking over the edge of the stairs. He is facing downward as well, so his positioning reminded me of the car. Instead of drawing water below the man, I used a fun, yet simple, orange background. I wanted to make it seem like the man was staring into the orange below him as if he were searching for something. Above the man, I stuck with the nature theme but put a twist on it by splitting the sky with nature and outer space. The leaf, as well as the vines drawn, represent the nature aspect of the album cover. The Earth, as well as the blue shapes drawn, represent the new outer space theme. Overall, it was fun to interpret one of my favorite album covers in a new way.

ARTH-322 Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Brooke and I am a senior Health Science major. I am also a member of the Women's Lacrosse team here at Saint Bonaventure. In my free time, I enjoy working out, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. My favorite season is summer and my favorite color is purple.

This is my third art class here at Saint Bonaventure (I've taken ARTH-101 and ARTH-102) and I love that art has allowed me to express myself and be creative. I am excited to continue to grow as an artist while appreciating the incredible work of my peers.

Final Project:

For my final project, I wanted to make a landscape. Instead of sketchbook paper I used a water color sheet. My first movement I tied into the piece was landscape impressionism. Impressionism involves making subtle changes to natural light. I did this by incorporating purple into my bushes. Impressionism also involves small unblended brush strokes. To incorporate this I made thin and small horizontal lines within the water to create texture. 

My second movement I tied in was naturalism. Naturalism involves creating art that looks as close to reality as possible. I attempted this by trying to make a focal point and adding depth to the picture. I wanted the water to look realistic as well so I tried to make reflections of the trees and bushes. In terms of class, I used the formal elements power point for inspiration for creating a focal point and complementory color combinations.

My third movement I tied in was landscape fauvism. Fauvism also deals with unnatural and unblended colors, so I used more purple in my trees than necessary to give it a bolder feel. Fauvism also uses defined brush strokes, so I emphasized that in my pine trees to give a bolder look to the painting.

Carolyn, I love your artwork! I love your choice of landscape, it is so calming and peaceful. It also looks very realistic, almost as if I could just walk right into your painting. Purple is my favorite color, so I loved that you added some purple to the trees. Although the purple is unnatural, it blends into the painting so well. Great job!

the surrealism part of this artwork is captured by the psychic automatism where the images are placed in no particular order to create a flowing scene which does not have any particular order.

impressionism is depicted by Vincent Van Gogh’s painting in the top right. It depicts some sort of form but stays away from making clear objects.

Renaissance is portrayed with the figure on the left and the two cherubs. This art movement focused on appreciating human life and learning the anatomy and depicting it in the most artistic way possible.

Hi! Your artwork is so unique and creative. It caught my eye immediately! I like how you used the surrealism movement to randomly place the images throughout the scene. Although they are randomly placed, they flow so well together. Each aspect of the piece can be viewed independently or as a whole. Great job!

Brooke, I love this piece of art! All of the different colors are so captivating and fun. The landscape you chose truly resembles an enchanted forest. My favorite part is the moon in the sky that has a smile. It gives the artwork a warm, welcoming feeling.
