Mikoshi parade in Ueno

I’ve never been interested in photographing festivals. Because festivals are people’s activities and I’m not interested in people much. So this night was a rare opportunity for me to shoot it. The sight of the mikoshi being carried through the glittering city lights was quite a spectacle.

Mikoshi parade in Ueno

The parade took place in a narrow drinking district on the opposite side of Ameyoko, across the elevated railway tracks, around 7:50 to 8:10 pm. It was Saturday night and the street was so crowded. I let the crowd carry me along behind the parade with my camera.

Mikoshi parade in Ueno

That night, after going to the Andrew Wyeth exhibition, I was strolling around Ameyoko (famous shopping street in Ueno) and came across this mikoshi (portable shrine) parade. This is the starting point where the man is saying something like “We’re gonna rock the street!”
