One Piece 1043 theory: Luffy still has the Gum-Gum fruit (kind of)
With the latest chapter it’s clear that something is up with Luffy’s Devil Fruit, and it’s almost certainly the one that was renamed by the World Government. Since then we’ve gotten tons of different theories about what Luffy’s real Fruit could be, like various mythical zoans, the Oil Fruit, and (probably the most plausible) the Resin Fruit. In fact, if my theory is wrong and Luffy’s Fruit really is just going to be another one the whole time, I’d say Resin is about as good as it gets.

Most of these theories seem to be based on the question of “what kind of Fruit could resemble Luffy’s abilities?” However, I want to ask “Why would Oda decide to give Luffy a new Fruit in the first place?” Because for most major characters Oda cares about the theming and meaning behind their powers to at least some extent. It’s the reason he decided to give Kaido a Fish Fruit instead of just a standard Dragon Fruit, despite dragon-type zoans already existing. He would absolutely care about this sort of thing for his main character, and no matter how I look at any of these theories, even the ones that “make sense” like the Resin Fruit, none of them fit Luffy’s character anywhere near as well as rubber does. He’s fun and playful, but always bounces back. Not to mention he’s been consistently associated with rubber and the number 56 (Go-Mu) so often that it would be incredibly jarring if that wasn’t at least half-true. Even in the current arc, Oda made Roger’s bounty 5.5 Billion just so Luffy could surpass it at 5.6 Billion.
However, there is one theme/idea that Oda has been building up over the course of the series, and in particular during the Yonkou Saga, that would fit Luffy just as well as, if not more so, than rubber. And that’s The Sun. Which brings me to the core of my theory.
I believe that the Devil Fruit that Luffy ate has two different abilities. The power of the Gum-Gum Fruit and the Sun-Sun Fruit.
I’ll go over how this could even be possible at the end (because I have two guesses), so for now I’m just going to focus on how I think this works both ability-wise and story-wise.
Ability-wise, It’s pretty simple. 95% of the abilities and traits that Luffy has shown are just him using the Gum-Gum Fruit as we’ve always known it. However, a few times he’s been able to tap into the power of the Sun-Sun Fruit.

When Rubber is heated it’s elasticity increases, this explains how his Snakeman attacks can stretch seemingly forever
Finally the last panel of 1043 is the heat of the sun making his rubber body melt
More importantly, story-wise there are a bunch of reasons why Luffy being sun-themed would fit.
Ever since the current Yonkou saga began we’ve been hearing talk about “The Dawn of The World.” In other words, the return of “the sun,” which is very likely related to the return of Joyboy, which is happening right now seemingly because of Luffy’s Fruit
The Sun in general has been a symbol of freedom and liberation since at least Fishman Island. Which, by the way, is the first time learn about Joyboy AND the first time we see Luffy use Red Hawk
Luffy’s final opponent and evil counterpart is probably Blackbeard, a man with multiple abilities, the Dark-Dark Fruit and the Quake-Quake Fruit. The Sun and Darkness are obvious counterparts, but Rubber could survive the vibrations of Earthquakes similar to how it insulates electricity. Thus making Luffy and Blackbeard even more clear-cut foils than they already were.
Luffy’s other major endgame opponent is Fleet Admiral Sakazuki. Sakazuki killed Ace because “magma is hotter than fire.” But the sun is hotter than magma, showing how Luffy would be the natural enemy of the Marines
Luffy learning to master a “stronger” fire-type Devil Fruit would also represent him surpassing his brothers.
Luffy is being associated with “SUN GOD” Nika. Nuff’ said.

Finally, there are a bunch of theories, like the Resin theory, that are associated with trees (The Sun Tree Eve, the Adam Tree, a hypothetical Devil Fruit tree). Sun and Trees go together.
So now that I’ve explained why I think Luffy having both the Gum-Gum Fruit and the Sun-Sun Fruit makes sense, I’m going to guess at how I think it’s even possible. I have two theories.
First guess: I believe that Sun God Nika was the first person to eat two different Devil Fruits and survive. And when he died, the two fruits merged together when they were reincarnated. This makes sense to me because despite being associated with the sun, the one silhouette we see of him is drawn in a “rubbery” style. Not only that, playing into the themes of inherited will, the Sun-Sun abilities could represent Joyboy, and the Gum-Gum abilites could represent Nika.
Second guess: It’s possible that the Sun-Sun Fruit is just a really weird and special fruit even by Devil Fruit standards, just like it’s counterpart the Dark-Dark Fruit. It’s possible that every time it reincarnates it also copies and “disguises” itself as a random fruit. In one cycle it could be the Chop-Chop fruit, another cycle it could be the Sand-Sand fruit etc. This theory would explain why it took the World Government 800 years to track the fruit down, and it could lead to a neat scenario where Luffy meets the “real” Gum-Gum Fruit.
TL;DR Sun God Nika managed to eat two Devil Fruits, The Gum-Gum Fruit and the Sun-Sun Fruit (which was originally Joyboy’s Fruit). When he died the two fruits merged together and now Luffy has the power of rubber and sun.
