What I really appreciate about birds who live near water, is that they hunt. I watched this Green Heron stalk prey on this dock and within the marsh. A few times he'd jump up and quickly grab something from the water. This Heron slowly walked, and peaked around bushes with his long neck extended. The Fish Crow is a coastal variant of the American Crow. It's a bit smaller, and has a distinct call from the American Crow. They're opportunistic, stealing food from other birds and stashing it away for later. I know they're just pigeons, but hear me out. First, these pigeons are called Rock Pigeons (which is cool, cause geology) They navigate by detecting the earth's magnetic field, giving them an excellent sense of direction. The Great Egret is exactly that, pretty great. So great, in fact, that they were nearly wiped out in the United States. In the late 19th century, plume hunting was all the rage, as feathers became a valuable commodity. Birds like the Great Egret were over hunted extensively. The symbol of the National Audubon Society is the Great Egret. This Carolina Marsh Rabbit is a small sub species of the Cottontail Rabbit. There are two other subspecies of Marsh Rabbits, both in florida. Interestingly, they prefer to walk on all four legs, like a cat. Though these rabbits can hop, walking & running is more suitable for the marsh environment they live in. Unsurprisingly, these rabbits can swim.
