“I picked the best man to spend it with, I got lucky really.” She smiled and ran her hands in his hair, gently yanking him upwards so she could look him in the eyes. She loved him like crazy and even to this day, he still made her heart skip when he got emotional or opened up to her about how he was feeling. This was good for the both of them, with their crazy pasts and baggage knew one another. 

“I love you Abe. I don’t know if I said that today but I do. Not just for the little fluffball even though I’m pretty sure he’s gonna soon try and take over Pepper’s cuddling sessions. I just… shit, I fucking love you. You’re amazing, wonderful and still my goofball.”

The yank to his hair cleared his thoughts and he was staring right into the pair of brown eyes that he loved so much. He bit his lower lip as she spoke, a slow smile spreading across his face when he released his lip. Abraham cupped her cheek. 

“You can say it as often as you’d like. I love hearing it” he said truthfully. He sneaked a kiss on her pouty lips and continued to stay close when they broke apart. The hand that was holding her cheek went down to her hips. “I love you. So much Peach. Always have and always will. Promise” 

She was his life. His wife. His forever person. The reason it never worked out with anyone else. And he would be happy to remind her of that everyday from now until forever.

“Some creamer and sugar, two and one please.” She nodded and pulled out her phone to check some messages, allowing the two of them to relax for a moment to themselves now that they had gotten the kids to help with settling in the puppy.

Alexis smiled, her mother did like the same coffee after all. Sweetened up and definitely not super strong and bitter. “Hey let me tag along.” She went to stand and join him in the kitchen, immediately hopping onto the island so she could watch as he made some coffee for them all. “So now we have a little wiggly pup, kinda sudden but what is life without some surprises huh? The kids are happy, I’m happy… and you’re happy right?”

He was heavily focused on the coffee. “I....” he started after Alexis spoke. Abraham turned around to see her sitting on the counter. He stepped to her and placed a hand on her legs on either side of her legs. Face to face, he tilted his head up just slightly to catch her lips with his. 

“...my dear am the happiest I’ve ever been” he said softly. As he got older, he noticed that he was able to control himself around his wife more. And it had nothing to do with Alexis. She was still the most striking person to ever walk the earth. But now and again, when they were standing close like this, he had flashes to insatiable Abe where he wanted her right here and right now. 

“I am so glad we decided to build this life together” Abraham said, his lips dropping to her neck, fingers clenching on the counter trying to hold on to his rational side that reminded him that it would be bad to toss her in the car and take her to the nearest hotel.

“Yeah, you’re right. Trying to get a sitter for Moxie pre-Alexis was always a struggle” Abraham said, then nodded “I’ll have to take you up on that” 

“Hey pop!” Noah said running back to him. “Do you think Pooka can use the stairs? I wanna show him my room”

Abraham pursed his lips in thought “Not sure champ. Why don’t you put him at the base and see? If not, you can always carry him up. I’m sure the little guy would love to see upstairs” he rose from his seated position on the chair and smiled as his son ran off. The rest of the kids behind him. “I think I’m going to make some more coffee”

“Have enough for me as well?” His in-law asked with a small smile, she did seem a bit tired but that was due to being asleep before she was called to look after the kids. No time for coffee or breakfast, just a quick glass of water and five minute shower so she could arrive in time. 

“Mmm, make it three baby.” Alexis spoke from her spot on the couch where Pepper stayed nestled up to her, more interested in being spoiled than seeing what the kids were up to.

The tiny barks from Pooka did make her look over as he was actually barking at the stairs. Not the children… but the stairs and even putting his paws up on the lowest one to try and get up. His fat furry butt wiggling up as he attempted but made a noise of frustration. “Theory proven, guess he still needs some help? Or maybe a little encouragement. The stairs aren’t too steep.”

“Yeah but he’s like a fluffy potato” Abraham said with a small smile. He called out to Noah “No! Help Pooka please”

“On it!” he heard his eldest’s reply as his feet hurried down the stairs to grab hold of the pup. Abraham went back into the kitchen and get some mugs for the other women in his life. He knew exactly how his wife took her coffee but was stumped on Wilhelmina. 

“Hey Ma? How do you want your coffee” he figured she would rather it on the strong side. He assumed Alexis got her taste from coffee from her mother.

“He seems like the friendly type so far, hasn’t snapped or anything. Why not? I always liked dogs anyway, just couldn’t afford one with the girls needing things.” Back when she was living with her ex and two girls, there was a lot of concern money wise since neither she or Tim were able to give them the pet they wanted. Now here her little girl was, all grown with children of her own, cute house and a sweet pair of pets.

“Think of it this way, you get an easy sitter at your beck and call who won’t want to charge you ridiculous prices.”

“Yeah, you’re right. Trying to get a sitter for Moxie pre-Alexis was always a struggle” Abraham said, then nodded “I’ll have to take you up on that” 

“Hey pop!” Noah said running back to him. “Do you think Pooka can use the stairs? I wanna show him my room”

“Hey, Miss Pep. Looking for some love too?” Alexis picked her up and stroked her, knowing that she might have been a bit stressed because of the new dog but she was at least being civil. So far. Hopefully she wasn’t plotting to swat at or bully the new puppy because she did have a nasty temper on her when she wasn’t happy. 

“Is Pepper happy we got Pooka?” Cece asked curiously. She did love their cat and it was normally Pepper who curled up in her room when she was rotating between her and Alexis.

“We’ll have to see, she seems okay with him so far. Just have to keep an eye on them huh?” Alexis watched Noah help Abe with the bed as well as some toys and food. Luckily they had the room for all of this and the house was perfect for pets. 

“Abraham?” Wilhelmina spoke up from the laz-e-boy she was sitting in. “If you ever need any help pet-sitting I can help out with that too. You know I’m already good with Pepper.”

Abraham turned and smiled at his mother-in-law. Being without a mother himself, he had grown closer to the older woman. Never as a replacement for Diane but as a different figure. He went and sat on the arm of the chair and wrapped her arm around her. 

“That would be amazing. I love our family vacations but unfortunately, we can’t bring the furry ones everywhere we go” 

He looked back to his family who continued to shower their animals with affection. Alexis cuddling Pepper and the kids showing Pooka some love. “You sure you’re alright with that? We don’t even know his personality just yet. I don’t want you to hate Pooka”

“Awww yes baby, he’s gon’ be a wolf alright. A big fluffy wolf you can cuddle with.” Alexis cooed at her daughter who was absolutely in love with Pooka, maybe love at first sight? She knew she felt that way about Pepper when they got her from the shelter. 

With Noah offering to help, she took his spot on the couch and cuddled up next to their youngest and she reached over to play with one of Isaiah’s curls. “Time for a trim soon?”

“I like ‘em mommy” Isaiah told her with a pout. Unlike Noah, he didn’t enjoy his hair being cut short so he opted for the natural instead which she made sure to take good care of and teach him how to do things on his own every so often. “Are we gonna teach Pooka tricks and stuff?”

“Mmm I don’t know… your dad is the super amazing dog trainer. I’m sure he’ll do that while we make sure to spoil little Pooka after.”

Noah ooohed at some of the toys they bought and held up the stuffed sheep. “Did you pick this dad?”

“Actually, that was all Pooka” he said. Abraham held his hand out for the toy and looked at it affectionately. He squeezed it and it made a sound. Pooka jolted up from his resting position and hopped off Cece’s lap to come near the toy. He barked a few times, his tail wagging excitedly. “See? He loves it. Your mother and I just approved his choice” 

Abraham held the toy up and the pup tried to jump at it. His little stub legs only getting him so far off the ground. He growled playfully and jumped again. Abraham couldn’t contain the smile before tossing the sheep and letting the little Keeshond run after it excitedly. His legs sliding on their hardwood floor. 

“Yeah! Such a champ” he said affectionately. Then he turned back to Noah “Let’s take this into the kitchen to put up. We can keep his bed in the living room for now. Before he decides if he wants to curl up in one of your rooms.” 

At that moment, Pepper decided to make an appearance. meowing and weaving through Alexis’ slightly parted legs.

“Yes sir, dad sir!” Noah immediately spoke up, still remembering how he would help with Moxie when she was still with them. Isaiah also did, to a lesser extent since he had been young but he loved her all the same and would love to cuddle up with her. 

“Yeah dad, we’ll take good care of him.” Isaiah pet Pooka’s head and scratched behind his ears as he relaxed on Cece’s lap.

Cecelia was all smiles as their puppy laid down, trying to relax but enjoying the attention he was getting. “I’m gonna be super ‘sponsible daddy! Promise!”

Alexis trusted the kids to be responsible for Pooka just as much as she and Abe were going to. It was a family effort to make sure he was well loved.  

“Daddy” Cece asked with bright eyes and a small smile. Her hands busy in Pooka’s fur “Is Pooka gon’ be this little forever?”

“Aw, no princess. We looked it up and his breed is going to get pretty big. He might be able to block the whole TV.”

Cece gasped “Like a wolf!” she looked down at Pooka “You’re gon be a wolf!”

Abraham chuckled and scratched the back of his neck. They created some really cute kids, that was for sure. “Alright, you guys get settled. I’m going to start unpacking what we got for Pooka.” Noah hopped from his spot. “I can help dad”

“Like with other friends and family?” Wilhemina looked a bit hesitant, she was always concerned about being in the same room with her ex-husband but for her daughter and grandchildren? She’d pull it together and hold her tongue from saying anything out of pocket… more so something that would upset him and make his already short temper with her go off. No that she could blame him.

“Something along those lines mom.” Alexis pat her shoulder as they got inside and set down Pooka’s things near the front, some of which they’d sort out in a bit. For now she was just happy to see the kids loving the newest member of the family. “Today’s been weird… but a good weird. I like good weird, ya know?” She smiled at Abe and one of his hands in her own.

“Agreed” he said. He brought her hand up to kiss, a grin on his face, “We are definitely a good kind of weird family”

Abraham was happy they kept Pooka. And he knew that at some point, he wouldn’t be able to imagine a life without the little trouble maker who just appeared on their doorstep. 

“Alright, MacAllistair children to the couch please. We have to have a quick talk about Pooka” he said. Still holding Alexis’ hand, he walked into the living room. The kids all scrambled on the couch. Noah (being the oldest and tallest) reached down to grab Pooka and set him on the lap of Cece who was between her brothers. Abraham smiled at his thoughtfulness. “So, this is our new pet. But, this means all of you are going to have to be responsible and help with walkings and feedings and playtime. Understood?”

“Awww you’re welcome baby.” Alexis hugged him back and also got one from Noah before they busied themselves petting the puppy in Cece’s arms. His tiny little tail wagging a mile a minute. She was right, their faces were like Christmas, maybe even more so because they hadn’t had a dog around in so long it felt. Just memories of the old but sweet lab who would keep an eye on them like another parent of sorts. “So we named him Pooka, he seems to like it but has to get used to it.”

“Pooka!” Cece grinned and got onto the floor with the pup, wanting to rub his belly and play. It was easy to see how fast she’d fallen for the Keeshond, there was no way they could separate her from him. 

“Well, they’re excited. He is cute.” Wilhelmina chuckled and watched them for a moment before seeing all they had bought. “You went all out on this one huh? I can see why, he loves the kids… and Pepper isn’t hissing in a corner either.”

Abraham looked up and saw Pepper in the window, watching them. She wasn’t glaring like she sometimes did, but she definitely wasn’t running out just yet. But, he was certain that the two would get along just fine. 

“Yeah, we couldn’t help it. We just kept putting things in the cart. Plus we wanted the little guy to feel like he was home and not taking up the space of another dog.”

Cece stood up and Pooka did too. Barking excitedly. Abraham, Alexis, and Wilhelmina gathered some bags and followed the excitable trio into the house. 

“We’re thinking about having a get together to celebrate” he explained.

She did know that her father and mother in the same room might not be the best, per say but they could come together for the kids every once in awhile. Wilhelmina wanted to be back in her life so she would need to understand that with that? Tim was number one grandpa… well tied for number one since he and John were both well loved. 

She got out first and saw Cece’s little face peering through the front window at them, curious about when they were returning. Upon seeing the little furball, she lit up and hopped down going to the front door and jumping up and down.

“He’s back! You brought him back daddy!”

Wilhelmina stood behind her, a knowing smile as she pat the little girl on her shoulder. “Go get your shoes on honey, okay?”

“Okay grammy!”

Abraham smiled seeing his daughter’s excitable face. His mother in law seemed to have gotten Cece dressed (sans shoes) and hair pulled back into a curly pony tail. Abraham shut the car door with his hip, Pooka in his arms and went to the back to get some of the bags. 

As Wilhelmina came towards them, all of a sudden she was passed by six excitable feet. It seems like Cece had told her brothers that they brought the dog back. She reached Abraham first and bounced in excitement. 

“Do we keep him? Is he ours?” she asked with pleading eyes. If the answer wasn’t already yes, it would have been after he saw that pout again. In response, he handed Pooka over to his youngest and Cecelia barely contained her squeal as Pooka started to bark and try to lick her face. 

“Thank you mommy!” Isaiah said and wrapped his arms around Alexis as she came round.

“We should! A little housewarming family get together to celebrate the unexpected new baby.” She couldn’t help herself, giving the pudgy furball rubs to his belly which he seemed to love and not get enough of since when she stopped he would whine and demand more. 

“Damn, I’m going to spoil him absolutely rotten you know. Just like I did to Pepper, soon he’ll have used wrapped around his tiny little paws.” She even placed a kiss on his small black nose and grinned when he tried to lick her back. “I should invite my dad… I mean he and mom still aren’t on the best terms but they’re civil for me at least.”

Abraham was impressed. Usually Alexis didn’t want her folks near each other for fear of fallout. This...was slightly unexpected. “Alright, I guess I’ll start making the phone calls once we get home” 

And that seemed to happen sooner rather than later. Because in no time at all was Abraham turning into their driveway. He was excited to see the kids, but he was more excited for the kids to see Pooka. With how much energy they all had, he could already picture the four of them tuckered out by the end of the day. 

“Ready bud?” he asked the dog who flipped to his feet, shook out his fur and barked excitedly. Pooka jumped and landed in Abraham’s lap. Panting and wagging his tail with excitement.

“I think they will, Pepper’s always been excited by other animals. Might teach him how to get into trouble though so we’ll need to keep an eye on them.” Alexis leaned back in her seat, Pooka peeking outside but relaxing enough that he looked happy just riding in the car while being held. Sure enough he was probably going to be all over the kids when they had them as well. Better to teach him early to sit in one spot so they didn’t have a large dog acting like a lap one during long drives.

“Oh, you think your dad and sis will like him? I know how much they love animals.” Though Moxie was primarily Abraham’s, she meant every bit as much to John and Hannah as she did to her husband.

“I hope so. Hannah will probably fall in love in an instant....and you know what, so will Pop. They’re pretty much one in the same” Abraham said with a small chuckle. The Keeshond barked and then rolled onto his back. Asking for some rubs in his own way. 

“What a ham, I think I love him already” Abraham said. “We should invite them over. Introduce them to the new family member. And I know Pop misses Cece”

“So far I think he’s proven himself to be very smart. Look at him, suckered us out of giving him a home” she teased but that didn’t stop her from holding him close. The tiny keeshond enjoying the attention and peering at the two of them curiously, letting out a tiny bark as he was placed in the front passenger seat so she could help with the supplies. After, she gave Abe a pat on his shoulder and went to her side, attempting to put Pooka in the backseat but he jumped forward again right onto her lap.

“I think he’s not a fan of being alone though.” She stroked under his chin and sighed, hopefully that was something they could quickly figure out and do what was best to not stress out the puppy, keeping him happy and healthy.

“We’re going to have to work on that with him. Can’t have him being destructive if we decide to go our for a night” Abraham said. Even though at this moment he couldnt imagine leaving their little love bug behind, he knew eventually there would be a point where Pooka would need to be alone for a little while. It was better to have him trained now. 

Abraham started the car and backed out of the parking space. As he hit the road, he began to think about how excited the kids would be. How, even though this was a big step, he couldn’t wait for their family to be complete once more. 

“I hope him and Pepper get along”

“Yeah? Looks like it huh?” Not that she minded, all her men around the house. Both big and small and now furry added to the mix. Alexis was all smiles as they walked to the front of the store and added up everything, which she somewhat winced because… well, thrifty in nature though they could afford it no issues.

The pup looked satisfied with his new toy and his soon to be new home, which she already could imagine the lit up faces of the kids when they came back with him in tow. “We’ll have to get him a regular groomer too with all this fur.”

“Oh absolutely. And when the shedding months come about we should look into one of those vacuums that help with pet hair. I love him, but I can’t have him shedding in our Saturday morning cereal time”

The clerk put the bags back in the shopping cart and Abraham handed Pooka to Alexis and pushed the cart out the door with a wave. As they headed to their car, he started to think about training a new dog. 

“I hope he’s a smart one. That will make training extra fun” he said.

“Really now?” Alexis hadn’t known that but now she was going to take note that harness might be the best option for their little fuzzball. “Alright, harnesses for you then little guy.” He seemed happy with his new toy and they moved on to grab some teeth cleaning supplies as well as bathtime products. Even a little tub that she eyed and decided to do the splurge on it. Why not.

“I think we have just about enough things, I know I might go overboard on our newest baby sooo you have to stop me.” 

“Will do. I was powerless to stop the Cece spoiling but I think I can put on a strong face with this one” Abraham said confidently. In reality it was him who spoiled Cece. After the initial panic over having a daughter, he immediately wanted to give her everything her precious heart desired. 

“Alright, to the checkout. I dont even want to know how much it is. Just take my card and let the little guy know we love him” Abraham joked. He scratched under the pups chin and heard him gruff in happiness. Their little guy. “Looks like the guys are outnumbering the girls again”

Pooka was adorable, and seeing Abraham perked up with another dog in his life? It made her heart warm because she knew his soft spot for animals. That and it had been some time since he had the chance to really love on a furball of his own besides Pepper.

“Mmm… now that’s up to us, he can’t see colors… maybe a blue one to match his little raincoat outfit?” She did love all hues of blues much like her husband did which made shopping and matching a hell of a lot easier than if they had differing opinions. “Probably a regular leash and then one of those mechanical ones so he can have some room to run around but still be close?”

“I love that idea” Abraham said. Not releasing the pup just yet. He was just as cute as could be. And as much as he missed his Moxie, he was getting on board of the idea of having another family pet around. “We should probably finish up and get him home anyway. The kids don’t know we’ve decided to keep him. 

He set Pooka back in the cart with his chew toy. Then he picked up the blue collar and leash. He stopped at the harnesses and grabbed one too.”I’ve heard attaching the leash to the collar isn’t good for dogs. Hurts their neck...especially when they were little”

Almost like he knew, Pooka pawed for the squeak toy and gave it a test chew a couple of times before letting him have it again.

“Huh. Don’t think he likes that one.” Alexis had an idea and scooped him up, setting him down at the bottom of the toy display and picking out a few for him to try. He seemed to like the ones with noises but only if they had faces. “Ha, look at him. Little feisty guy isn’t he? Think he likes this weird little sheep thing… let’s get it.” Even though the squeakiness would probably drive them insane later down the line.

“Better to do this now than have to deal with him messing up our good shoes because he needs a good chew.”

Abraham knelt low with him and listened to him play, growling as he did so. “Aw, such a fierce little guy! What a champ” 

When Pooka had picked, Abraham snatched him and the toy up an held him close. The toy was clamped tightly in his jaw as Abraham played around like he was going to take it away. It was really cute to watch the little guy struggle to hold onto his toy. 

“Collars and leashes?” he asked Alexis between moments where he kissed the pup’s cold nose. Causing him to sneeze but continue to grip the toy protectively.
