Abierto Art is pleased to announce its third group show, “When You Know It You Will Find It”. As we begin to grow up, we are led to view ourselves as individuals, or as independent beings separate from one another; however, most of us know or have experienced the interconnectivity that in fact unifies our universe. It is important to realize at a point that one thing does depend on another, thus linking us together as one entity. As the Dali Lama says: “...this absence of some kind of independent, autonomous reality is said to be ultimate truth." As we leave the sense of wonder and imagination from our childhood behind, we tend to feel that something is lost. We then spend most of our lives searching for that “something”, or a replacement, feeling not quite complete. In reality, all we truly need to feel whole or connected is inside ourselves, joining us all to each other as living, breathing humans. This connection and inner completeness is something that is inherent in childhood but tends to slip away with the demands of the modern world.
These pieces are curated with that same connectivity in mind. It is important not to exclude the dark side that grows within all of us as we lose our innocence. A somewhat grim, almost eerie emotional blockage that aims to protect us, pulling us further away from reaching our true potential. These artists have produced works which examine the collective negative mind more closely. The works here also aim to explore the goofy, silly side that lives in us all, which is often sheltered by our dark more serious illusions. These works of art, as well as the artists themselves, are open to exploring this bipolar notion. Art, as is life, is not something to be looked at with fear but rather a child-like curiosity, recalling our innocence that we claim to have lost.
While the works--from Kerry Lacy’s beguiling painting "Three" to Tara Gayle’s multimedia piece depicting the “housewife headache”--may demand thoughtfulness, they are not austere. All of the works strive rather to promote acceptance of the dark in order to fully see the light. We invite you to abandon your soul-protecting fear tonight and experience the connection of humanity through artwork. Let go and embrace your inner child, talk to a stranger, and bond over your dark thoughts in order to laugh at them.
Enlightenment of the human condition puts to rest the once seemingly endless search for unity. At one with the universe within, at peace with knowing you have found that elusive “IT,” your search will be no more.
