I have studied Italian since I was sixteen years old (fun fact, I took the GCSE course in a nine and a half months and missed an A* by one mark, still bitter). It is one of the great joys in my life, a joy which has driven me to tears of frustration and has brought me immense pleasure. @royal_rory and @laurenolmeda have bother recommend Jhumpa Lahiri's 'In Other Words', or as I've decided to read the Italian rather than the English translation, 'In Altre Parole.' I hope that I will finally have found a piece of writing which expresses the agony and ecstasy that is immersing oneself in another language, another culture, and another self. I'll let you know.

It's time to stand up and be counted. This is, possibly, the most important election we will ever vote in, so make sure you turn up. Women in my age group, 18 - 24, are the least likely to vote, despite the fact that the policies of the n st government will effect is for far longer than they will effect those least likely to vote (men aged 55+, quelle suprise). Polling stations opened at 7am and they will stay open until 10pm this evening. Your voting slip will have the names of the candidates and their parties, if your not sure who your candidates are have a look online before you go, I think the Telegraph has a tool where you can search by postcode. When you arrive at the polling station, give them the first line of your address and they'll ask your name and give you your slip. Go to the booth, read through the names and mark the box of your chosen candidate with a cross. Fold your slip and put it in the ballot box. Remember, voting is completely private and you don't have to tell anyone whose box you crossed. You can vote at any time, and you're allowed to take time off work to vote. I'm not here to influence you, but I will be voting Labour for a myriad of reasons, even though my seat has been Tory for as long as anyone can remember. If your nervous about voting, take a friend. Yesterday, after a strenuous morning spent brunching away the sins of Friday night, my friend Amanda and I wandered over to our favourite bookshop, Persephone Books, where I persuaded her to pick up two of my favourite books, ‘Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day’ (a belated birthday gift) and and E. M. Delafield’s 'Diary of a Provincial Lady’, which in my humble opinion is one of the funniest books ever written. Whilst we were there, I bought 'Consequences’, also by Delafied, which I a hoping can coax me out of my job application induced reading slump. (At Persephone Books)
