7 weeks, 7 flights, 7 destinations and countless memories...
The Top 3's: If there's one thing I've learnt over the last couple of months it would be to never take a single second for granted. Treasure the moments you'll talk about when you're old and grey and remember the people that made those moments so memorable. The moments gained from the last few months are the ones I'll savour forever and I'll be forever grateful that I stomached the courage to take a risk. A risk that finally allowed me to just do my own thing and to deal with the consequences when it was time to. We're constantly pressured in life to get it right first time, to grow up and take responsibility for ourselves, except it's not as easy as a check list or a simple question and answer. It's a matter of trial and error and they'll be bumps in the road but that's ok. It's not necessary to copy those before us in playing it safe. They'll probably tell you it wasn't all fun and games and we should remember that there's no such thing as what can only be described as a 'normal' life. Ultimately I didn't want to look back on my twenties as a string of "ifs, buts and maybes." There's no right or wrong in the decisions you make. Have faith in knowing everything happens for a reason and know that it's no one else's right to tell you that you can't do something. Make your own mistakes, find the light at the end of the tunnel and remember that life would be boring if it didn't challenge us on the way we chose to live it. I've talked a lot about moments and those pinnacle occasions in life that make us who we are. Whilst this trip was full of these moments, I've summarised the ones that truly made an impact, validating my decision to bite the bullet and jump. Top 3 experiences 1. Diamond head trail - truly breath taking. The views across the whole of Waikiki are like nothing I've ever seen in my life. 2. Swimming with sea turtles in Tulum - being so close to both the Turtles, the Sting Ray and the fish of the coral was beautiful. A must if you're traveling to Mexico. 3. Grand Canyon - Absolutely incredible. Stepping out onto the cliffs edge gave me an adrenalin rush I've never felt. It put life into perspective whereby all those silly little things you concern your mind with on a daily basis are just that. Silly little things! Top 3 lessons 1. Treasure those who matter most in life. These are the people that you'll be able to experience the good times with but most importantly will support you through the bad. 2. Always think of the bigger picture. We often worry about being on our own but we fail to remember that we are forever surrounded by millions of people. The worlds a big place and no matter where you are in it, you'll never be alone. 3. Live in the moment, take it all in, forget about the past and most importantly, don't be in fear of what's to come. Top 3 moments 1. Stepping off the plane in Hawaii with no one to meet me the other end. This was such an invigorating emotion, knowing that I was there on my own, to do my own thing and to be with just my own thoughts. 2. Standing on the platform at Penn Station, waving goodbye to a very special someone. After the most incredible two weeks together exploring New York and Mexico it was heart breaking to have to say goodbye. It's moments like this that make me realise how lucky I am. Lucky enough to be so in love with someone that the thought of a few more weeks apart brought me to tears. You never think that those kind of moments exist but when they do, remember to savour every single second. 3. Touching down in London. This was a bitter sweet feeling because reminiscing about the last two months made me feel like I wasn't ready to face normality but at the same time I couldn't wait to see my friends and family and in all honesty, I actually missed having a job. In this moment I made a promise to myself that from that moment on I wouldn't take the easy way out. I'd make decisions based on passion and stay true to the life I envisaged. You only live once... So make it count!

Road trip to the West Coast...
Grand Canyon complete, next on the agenda... Santa Barbara. But first, an 8 hour drive. Poor Beck had to drive the whole hog because my driving license was in the bag that got stolen in Vegas. It's a shame as I was seriously looking forward to driving a convertible. In hindsight though, I actually make a much better passenger. We booked two nights in Santa Barbara and wound up finding this seriously cute hotel called Hotel Milo. It was situated right on the beach and only a 10 minute walk to both the Pier and the Marina. If you're looking for a crazy night out Santa Barbara's not the place for you. It's more about its elegant history and beautiful scenery. The main shopping strip can keep you entertained for hours and although we didn't have time, the locals rave about the hiking trails. It was exactly what we needed after a couple of days of sight seeing and what seemed like endless driving. Then there was LA... We stayed in Venice Beach in an apartment we rented through air b n b. I'd definitely recommend going down this route as it's much more reasonable and it's a great way to meet people. They know all the cool hang out spots which are much less touristy and they all seem to be so intrigued by the English accent. One mistake we made was not keeping the car. We only had it for 3 days in LA and trust me when I say the traffic is horrendous. Way worse than London with little to no public transport. If you're wanting to visit places like Hollywood Blvd, Beverly Hills, Universal Studios, keep a car for the entire duration of your stay. If not there's always Uber. Santa Monica is amazing for shopping, restaurants and bars and if you love people watching, Venice Beach is the place for you! Some days we just laid out by the pool, which to be honest is where we had our funniest moments. We met some right characters who insisted we spent the day with them. A BBQ, the play offs and for some, far too much alcohol. Let's just say it got a little bit out of hand. A recipe for disaster for a few but yet many hilarious stories for others. Need I say more... LA was the perfect place to finish off the trip. 6 weeks has flown by and LA gave me the best of both worlds. Traveling around so much can be exhausting but LA was perfect for the needed chilled days, touristy busy days and for the livelier nights we all know and love. I'm not sure I was there long enough as I would have loved to have seen more of Hollywood as there was so much we didn't get round to doing or seeing. All in all it was epic but I guess I'll just have to go back.. Until next time Cali!

Breaking rules at the Grand Canyon - Indescribable!
A 4 hour drive from Vegas and we'd arrived at the Williams, Arizona. We chose to stay at a Best Western on the historical Route 66, about an hours drive from the South Rim of the Canyon. The hotel was very basic but we weren't looking to spend a lot of time there, just somewhere to sleep. It's definitely worth staying further out as the drive to reach the Canyon is pretty cool and the rates are so much more reasonable. The South Rim itself is really easy to get to and sign posted from about 30 miles out. You pull up to these gates where you pay $30 to park the car and that covers all the occupants too. Seems a bit punchy but I promise it's worth it. Don't underestimate how long it takes to see the different viewing points around the Canyon. Some are within walking distance but others you need to drive to or jump on the free shuttle bus provided. This can take up to an hour depending on what parts you want to see. You can't begin to imagine how phenomenal the view is, it honestly takes your breath away. I'm not condoning climbing down rocks or breaking the rules but to walk out onto the cliffs edge was probably one of my most surreal experiences. The adrenalin I felt when having to turn around to get that picture was out of this world. Some people can be stupid with it though by doing hand stands or genuinely sitting right on the edge, my advice is to just be careful. I would 100% go back but next time would love to do a full days hike. Some can last up to two days with an overnight camp but even to just do the 6 hour trail would be one hell of an experience. We sometimes take for granted the natural beauties of the world and get so caught up in our materialistic ways of life that we miss out on the moments that can truly take our breath away. Make the time to fully appreciate what's on your doorstep and recognise that the little things in life (in this case not so little) are what really shape the way we chose to live it. A stolen bag and multiple sore heads... Vegas 1, Abi 0.
Let's just say my second time to Vegas was eventful. This time we stayed at the Venetian which is beautiful once you've actually found your way around it. I think we must have got lost every time we left our room. I met Beck at the airport early afternoon, with only an hours flight I felt fine, she however had just endured a beastly 10 hour trek from London so was definitely already feeling it. The plan was to go to see 'Thunder From Down Under' (an Australian male strip show) but after one too many cocktails at the hotel pool bar it was near enough impossible to wake Beck up after she decided to take just a 20 minute cat nap. Error! We hit Tao on the second night and although we had to wait over half hour for a table the food was incredible. A bottle of bubbles later along with a number of vodka sodas we were ready for what we could only assume would be a long night... Until my bag got stolen! I couldn't even have written a more drastic and short lived night. We must have literally turned our heads for no more than 2 seconds. Just enough time for some idiot to take what didn't belong to them. With my phone in my hand I thankfully only said goodbye to my ID, make up and about $100. Yes mum, I know, lesson learnt! "Don't take your eye of your bag and serves you right for putting it down." By no means did this ruin an amazing few days in Vegas. Let's just say we're not all cut out for the long hours of drinking, the crazy bar tabs and the outrageous heat. Until next time...

A sore bum and thorough leg workout...A flying visit to San Fransisco
So I only had two days in San Fransisco and by no means was this long enough. I had just enough time to rent a bike, tour the main attractions and take a trip the Alcatraz. I chose a bike rental company called blazing saddles. A solid choice but if your a bit of a speed freak and slightly impatient like I am I'd advise you opt for the self guided tour. They simply give you a map and send you on your way. I asked for the guided tour as I knew I was doing it alone but got stuck with a family that I'm assuming don't bike all that often. If you know SF you'll know it's very hilly, having to stop and wait for people to push their bikes up those hills got a little tiresome after a while. The tour itself was great though, learning some really interesting facts and I got to see the beautiful town of Saulsalito. The company give your a ferry ticket for the way back (because trust me you wouldn't want to bike it) which is great as you don't have to queue but I'm pretty sure they sting you with the price. It might be worth not using it and just purchasing your own. I also did Alkatraz... This is a must and really made the trip for me. My advice is to definitely book a few weeks in advance as I really struggled to get a ticket last minute. The ferry left at 9.30am and once on the island I had as long as I wanted with the last ferry back being around 6pm. (I'm not sure you could spend the whole day there.) The guided audio was pure brilliance and really set the tone when being directed through the prison. They use voices of prisons guards and convicts which really encapsulates your imagination. They do a night tour which I'm sure would be amazing, not sure I could have done this one alone though. In all the city was beautiful but I definitely wasn't there long enough. I didn't get a chance to see the different neighbourhoods or a chance to find the best hangouts, restaurants and bars. You can count on working up a sweat walking from street to street as I felt like I was playing hill roulette with the routes I was choosing. If you don't feel like playing, stick to the main roads, these tend to be a lot flatter but to be honest you can't avoid climbing at least one or two of the monsters...

Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen
My mum played me a song about 10 years ago and never has its lyrics and underlying meaning resonated as much as it has over the last week or so. It’s a common debate in life, that we all should know who we want to be, where we want to end up and how we’re supposed to get there. In my opinion, we shouldn’t over think it or at least not let it cloud our judgement, force things that aren’t meant to be and let it mess with the decisions we chose to make in life. Contrary to that, I’ll admit that I’m the biggest worrier. Mole hills become mountains and non existent issues become dilemmas but I’m making a conscious effort to stop worrying about the future because maybe “worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.”
If there’s one thing that I’ve learnt over the last couple of months it’s that everything in life is about timing. Good things happen to good people and as cliche as it sounds, maybe everything does happen for a reason. Life’s not a race! “Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and in the end, it’s only with yourself.” We’re not competing in life for happiness and we’re certainly not looking for recognition that we did a god job at living. So why are we constantly seeking the next best thing and doubting our destiny. Is the grass really always greener? Or are we just gambling a field of dreams for a possible concrete maze? Ive recently realised that we should chase every opportunity, be confident in the decisions we make and hold on to those precious few people that make life worth living.
I’ve just completed the second segment of my trip, spending a week in Mexico and a week in New York. I can honestly say I’ve had the time of my life, spending it with someone who I’ll most certainly be holding onto… for life! I’m a true believer in that it doesn’t matter where you are in the world but with whom you chose to be there with. “Tan lines fade but memories last forever!” You might find that you take these moments in life for granted and by the time you realise how special they are, they’re gone. Don’t waste another moment… Recognise it’s beauty, digest it's significance and remember that memories last an eternity.
Mahalo Oahu, Hawaii - You were awesome!
So my week here in Oahu, Hawaii has flown and it’s been epic. From my first hostel experience, a waterfall and volcanic hike, a road trip to the north shore, to simply enjoying the Hawaiian zest for life. The pace of life here really is hypnotic. Every morning you witness the early raisers waking up to run along the coast line in sync with the sunrise, whilst the local surfers make the most of the vacant waves before the tourist pile in. There’s so much to do and see on this island and I barely scraped the surface:
The Breach Waikiki Boutique Hostel So this was my first experience staying at a hostel and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. As far as my preconceived judgement of how I thought it would be, it wasn’t that bad at all. Staff were extremely helpful and the rooms with pretty clean. It was no 5 star stay but better than can be expected. Every morning there was free breakfast on the rooftop which consisted of porridge, toasts and muffins and two nights a week they served complementary pizza and hotdogs. More than what most hostels offer I’m sure. I chose to stay in an all girl dorm just because boys can be so gross and it’s common for a lot of people to come and go with some just staying for one night. Never at any point did I feel unsafe and I made sure to use the lockers provided for my valuables. This place was really generous with the use of their snorkelling equipment, surfboards, floats etc and if you needed any guidance getting around the island they were more than happy to help. As far as hostels goes, this one gets my seal of approval.
Manoa Falls On my first day I met two other girls in my hostel who invited me on this hike to Manoa Falls. To get there it takes about half an hour by car from Waikiki and a taxi worked out about $70 return which between a big group isn’t too bad. The hike is about 3 miles round trip and took us just over an hour. I’d recommend wearing walking boots or trainers as the up hill path can be quite muddy and wet in places. The trek itself is pretty easy and not too strenuous for those who are reluctant to work up a sweat and the entire trail is in the shade from the trees of the rainforest. The top the 200 meter waterfall is breath taking but note that your not allowed to swim in the plunge pool although some rule breakers do. In all, a really relaxing, beautiful scenic walk, perfect to kick start your day. Oh and don’t forget to take your camera, you might get lucky like me and get the chance to see a Hawaiian rainbow at first hand.
Diamond Head Trail By far the best thing I did… I woke up on my second morning with the worst jet lag and looked at my phone to see 5.30am. Bug eyed and wide awake I thought I’d make the most of the day and get up to do the Diamond Head Trail. People I’d spoken to said it was best to do it first thing in the morning as there were less tourists and the temperature would be a lot more bearable. I was starting to feel slightly guilty about the lack of exercise I’d be doing in the next couple of days, so made the decision to walk to the crater which in itself took me about 40 minutes. A further 30-40 minutes later and I was faced with the most spectacular view. Words can’t describe the feeling you get when you look out across the Hawaiian coast line. Bright blue waters accompanied by golden sands, green mountain tops and its own miniature concrete jungle of Waikiki. The walk itself can be quite vigorous in places (aprox 3 miles round trip) with the option to take additional steps if you want to challenge yourself. For the lazy, you’re able to walk around which takes slightly longer and if you’re like me and wanting to get your heart rate up, be aware of tourists who are in no rush what so ever. Definitely take some water with you and don’t forget your camera. Sensible shoes are a must because trust me, the amount of wedges I witnessed attempting to climb a mountain was comical. And finally, have fun and take it all in. Honestly this is a once in a life time!
North Shore A more natural surrounding, the North Shore is perfect for a day at the beach, a wander around the local shops, paddle boarding, canoeing and if your any good, surfing. The beaches are surrounded my natural greenery and family homes. I visited a Haleiwa which is full of character and famous for its secluded white sandy beaches and delicious shaved ice. If your looking to visit the North Shore and coming from the South of Oahu, I’d suggest renting a car, I got two buses which took over 2 hours. That way your able to drive up the coast allowing you to see other major attractions including Turtle Bay, which I’d heard nothing but amazing things about.
Pearl Harbour Memorial So if your anything like me you’ll be embarrassingly ignorant to the events of Pearl Harbour or perhaps you’ve only ever watched the film. Well I hadn’t even managed that so was extremely interested in visiting the memorial. It’s about an hours bus ride from Waikiki but again, drive if you can as its only approximately 9miles away. I’d also reserve a ticket, they’re released online at 7am the day before and garentees you a spot. Otherwise you can find yourself waiting for up to 2 hours to see the memorial once you get there. The venue consist of a number of different museums all containing memorabilia and facts about the day the Japanese army attacked. I couldn’t believe how little I knew about such a pinnacle day in history. At your given time slot you’re ushered into an auditorium where you watch a 20-30 minute video followed by a boat trip out the memorial which lays in the middle of the harbour. This for me was quite surreal. The memorial sits on top of a sunken boat that got attacked on December 7th and you’re told that over 1000 bodies still lay beneath its armour. It’s pretty powerful where not a single word is spoken during the 15 minutes you spend admiring the names of the fallen. I wouldn’t categorise this as a must see but if you have time I would definitely go. It’s important to know about the history behind Pearl Harbour and it really opened my eyes to the on goings of World War ll.
So… I’m so glad I decided to start my ‘Journey of Self Discovery’ here in Hawaii. It gave me a chance for some 'me' time, to read a book, to embrace the outdoors, to meet new people and to just enjoy myself. One of the most important things you can learn in life is to appreciate and value your own company. Nobody knows you better than you do. It takes time but when you’re no longer afraid to go at it alone, it'll means so much more when you get to do all those things with someone you love. Next stop...NYC to meet my someone!
