“ talking  to  people  is   hard , ”     she  says  with  a  sigh ,  glancing  up  at  him .    “ i’ve  never  been  great  at ,  you  know ,  opening  up  and  making  friends .  people  always  said  i  was  way  too  awkward .  it  looks  like  camp  counselor  abi  is  no  different . ”    she  lets  out  a small  chuckle .     “ i  wish  i  could  be  half  as  social  as  emma . ”

“  you  know , ”           she  starts ,  offering  the  other  a  gentle  smile .     “ teaching  art  to  kids  is  surprisingly  fun . ”      she  pauses  as  she  lets  out  a  chuckle .     “ no  one  has  a  higher  level  of  purely   unhinged   creativity  than  a  kid ,  you  know ? ”

“ everyone  is  saying  it’s  a  bear , ”     she  starts ,  her  voice  on  the  edge  of  distress .      “ but  i  saw  that  thing  up  close  and  personal ,  and  there’s  no  way  that’s  a  bear . ”    she  wrings  her  hands  together  nervously .     “ whatever  that  is  out  there ,  it’s  so  much    WORSE    than  a  bear . ”

“ i’m  not  sure  what  to  do , ”     she  started ,  dropping  her  gaze  to  the  ground  as  she  aimlessly  kicked  at  the  dirt  at  her  feet .      “ when  it  comes  to  survival  of  the  fittest ,  i  definitely  don’t  fit  into  the  ‘ fittest ’  category . ”

she  lets  out  a  huff  as  she  plops  down  onto  a  log  by  the  fire ,  sighing  heavily  before  she  offers  the  other  a  tight - lipped  smile .    “ so ,  be  honest  with  me , ”    she  starts  reluctantly .      “ how  obvious  is  it  that  i  have    no   idea  what  i’m  doing ? ”

she’s  lost .  she’s  completely  and  utterly  lost ,  and  absolutely  terrified .  getting  separated  from  the  group  was  definitely  not  the most  ideal  situation ,  and  yet  it’s  the  one  she’s  found  herself  in .  her  head  whips  around  at  a  sound  from  behind  her ,  her  heart  pounding  as  she  scans  the  area  around  her .     “ is  someone  there ? ”

“ you  seem  to  know  a  lot  more  about  what’s  going  on  than  we  do , ”    abi  breathed ,  looking  the  other  girl  up  and  down .  you  could  tell  just  by  looking  at  her  that  she’d  been  through  hell .  the  eyepatch  alone  gave  that  away ,  if  abi  was  being  honest .     “ is  nick  gonna  be  okay ? ”

“ you’ve  been  quiet  for  a  while , ”     she  says  softly ,  her  eyes  never  leaving  the  pages  of  her  sketchbook  as  she  continues  to  draw .     “ if  there’s  something  on  your  mind ,  i’m  happy  to  listen .  i’m  good  at  listening . ”     she  pauses ,  glancing  up  at  him  for  a  moment ,  her  expression  sheepish .     “ talking ?  not  so  much . ”

she  would  be  lying  if  she’d  said  she  wasn’t  scared .  the  first  thing  abi  had  done  after  werewolf  nick  had  taken  off  was  hand  the  gun  over  to  kaitlyn ;  not  only  was  she  obviously  a  lot  more  skilled  and  confident  in  handling  it ,  but  after   shooting   nick ,  holding  onto  the  gun  was  the  last  thing  she  wanted .     “ i  can’t  believe  i  just  did  that , ”     she  mumbled  as  she  handed  her  friend  the  gun .        “ i’ve  never  even  held  a  gun  before  today . ”
