Alador: And Darius doesn’t ignore his headaches for 14 years straight so I can share a bed with him instead of sleeping on the couch!

“You’re welcome,” he responds as a warm smile spreads on his lips. “It’s always perfectly fine to let me know if you need anything, alright? Usually I’m either around here somewhere or at Darius’ office.” 

Howell then chuckles a little as he sheepishly rubs the back of his neck. “But, it might be good not to let me near your inventions since I’m not the best with technology. The fact that I haven’t accidentally destroyed my own scroll yet is a miracle.”

“Oh, uh, sure,” he said, hesitating just a bit. Alador wasn’t really one to ask for things unless it pertained to his work. Just another thing Odalia had instilled in him...

“That may be for the best. A lot of my work is very experimental and Darius would kill me if you got hurt because of it.”

“For your sake, for your children’s, I didn’t want to be.” Sure, when they were younger. He was bitter and brokenhearted, always talking of how the pair would never last. But….to some extent, he was right, and now he has his old friend falling apart before him. He wished he could take it all back.

“You can cry if you need to.” He whispered into his hair. “Cry, scream, vent. Just get it all out, tell me what it is you need, and I’ll do my best to get it for you. But this isn’t your fault, you deserve to be loved and cherished by someone. Do you hear me?“

He can’t. He can’t cry. Instead his body shakes, trying to bottle it up. He’s just getting emotional again and he shouldn’t. Darius didn’t need to see him act so childishly, he didn’t-

Alador stopped his train of thought. That’s how she treated him. Not how Darius did. Even as teens, Darius made sure he felt his feelings and encouraged him to do so... Odalia was the one who reprimanded him for it... Not him...

There’s a small choked sound as he finally let’s himself start to cry. His feelings over Odalia and their marriage and their kids... Those were still real... He cherished and loved them all so much. But those were not returned by his wife. It was all out of convenience for her. It all just furthered her own plans to have a family and heirs and someone so devoted to her that he was too blind to see anything else.

“I was wrong. I was so terribly wrong about everything-” he sobbed.

I don’t know how or where to begin to unpack this scene… what I’m getting it that she doesn’t tell him things because he’ll get emotional

She just brushes off what the rest of her family feels, says, and wants because it’s not what she wants, which is power and a good image.

It's. It's so gross? It's a typical "mother knows best" kinda line. She's undermining his autonomy and maturity by asserting that his reactions to things are unreasonable, or childish, that she keeps him in the dark because he'll just make a fuss? It's infantilising and patronising and I want to make her swallow her necklace.

this scene is SOOOO upsetting this MARRIAGE was sOO upsetting. From the moment that she crushed the bug Alador was interested in I knew that she sUCKED SOO MUCH. Because there was no reason for her to do that! She ruined something he was interested in for essentially no reason other than, idk, she thought it was annoying? She thought it made her look bad??

Alador held her just a touch tighter. “I’m so sorry that you had to endure that. I’m sorry that I never noticed. I’m sorry I was always too busy to be there for you and the twins. But I want to be here for you three now… The best that I can. I care about you all so much.”

He rested his chin on top of her head. “I really believed she was doing what was best for all of us… And I followed her so blindly… And it caused you and Edric and Emira so much pain and anxiety… I wish I could take it all back…”

She wrapped her arms around him and held on tight to his lab coat. Amity pressed her head to his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. There was a long pause and she said quietly, “Do you think mom got you to work like that on purpose? To keep you away from us?” It was a fear that had been growing in her mind ever since the reveal earlier that her mother had known about everything. 

“Mom is good at talking to people…” she murmured. Her arms tightened again and she turned her head, burying her face against him. “Just be there for us from now on.”

At her question he felt his chest tighten, his heart speed up just a bit. Had she done it to keep him away from their children? To make sure he didn't see what was happening to them?

"I... I can't say for sure..." Alador replied. He frowned a bit. He was still trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, wasn't he? "But it's possible. At this point I wouldn't be surprised. She knew how to pull all the right strings to get what she wanted..."

His hand combs through his daughter's lilac hair. Alador gives the top of her head a small kiss. "I will, sweetheart. I promise."
