Jessica Steen was, well I can't say "one of the nicer" ones at the
convention because they *all* were so very nice to everyone, but I would
have to agree that she was probably one of the most relaxed on stage. :-)
Although, she would often say something and then check the back of the
room for confirmation; I assumed that her husband was there although I
never verified that. Kirk Trutner (Cameron) and Lisa Ebeyer and Jeff
Deist (the Grendlers) were often in the back of the room, sometimes making
comments, so she might have been looking at them.
One of the questions posed to Jessica was in relation to the fight scene
with Devon (and, by extension, with Morgan). She told us that they had a
good time with that and, if I remember correctly, that there was very
little for the stand-ins to do because they both got so involved in it.
In fact, I distinctly remember her saying that they were both complaining
the next day over all the bruises that had come up from that scene! She
also indicated that she found the fight with Devon to be a little more
"fun" in the sense that Julia and Devon were really fighting while Morgan
was just trying to get away. "What a wus" was a comment made during that
talk regarding Morgan. :-)
Someone asked her about who the nicest person on the set was to work with.
She had a very difficult time answering this; in fact I expected her to
give up and say that she couldn't choose. Ultimately however she said
that Kirk Trutner was the nicest person to work with. I don't know, maybe
he was holding money up in the back of the room or something! (Although,
to be quite honest, Mr. Trutner came on Friday afternoon and gave a talk
and stayed around for some time that day. He was there again on Saturday
before any of the other "stars", and stayed long after most everyone else
left. He was also there Sunday for the panels that were given on that
day. So maybe he is just the "nicest" of the whole bunch.)
Jessica brought a tape that, I believe, she had made. I saw a few minutes
of it, but it was shown after the banquet was over (and I did not attend
that), so only some people were aware that it was on. I heard that it had
scenes of a Terrian (in full costume) dancing in a parking lot, as well as
several of the actors around a table doing their 'public service'
announcements for NBC and Earth2. I saw a few minutes where someone was
trying to get the spider to stay on the piece of fruit when the Grendler
was investigating Julia's quarters. That, evidently, was a long process
since they used *real* spiders for everything (or almost everything --
this is second hand information so I'm not sure exactly what was said.)
Someone asked her about a kitten that I guess they had adopted recently.
As a fellow cat lover, I was quite pleased to see the way her face lit up
when talking about it. I believe the name was "sazi", short from
'Anasazi', which is (of course) the name for an ancient group of people
native to that area who disappeared leaving no trace behind as to why they
would just up and leave. (Needless to say, archaeologists are not too
pleased with them.)
Surprisingly enough, I do remember one comment she made. Actually, it is
surprising that I remember, but also I was surprised at the comment.
::sigh:: Here it is -- something about her and Debra Farentino both
liking to eat. The reason I found this so surprising is that Clancy Brown
once mentioned (not at the con, on a chat or a TV interview or something,
I don't remember) how he worked with some of the *skinniest* women in the
business and how much fun it was to tease them. Along the lines of
"you're having *another* bagel? Is that wise?" LOL! Anyhow, maybe she
was just saying that after the fight scene they both needed extra energy;
I don't remember the context in which the comment was made.
Hmmm, what else? She is, of course, very beautiful. Very natural in
terms of how she was dressed and the amount of makeup she had on (not sure
that she had any makeup on, but it's kind of hard to check those kinds of
things. :-> ) Very pleased to hear that we had a few Canuckleheads
(Canadians) in the audience. Rather surprised that anyone remembered (and
liked) her work in Captain Power -- seems she didn't enjoy that job and
was counting the days until she could get out. Of course, when you're in
the middle of a situation it's sometimes hard to see how others might view
it, but people at the con were telling her how it was a good role model
for young girls at the time. She was focusing on the violence and general
mayhem that was the hallmark of the show and seemed a bit surprised that
others would overlook that and concentrate on the female role model
potential.
She did mention that it was amusing to her to go from one show (Captain
Power) where she would just wave these funny appliances and claim that
everything was "fixed" to another show (Earth 2) where she'd wave this
funny glove and claim that she knew what was wrong with a person!
Her work on Homefront seemed to have made quite an impression. She
mentioned a couple of times how the people on that show were very *very*
good friends of hers. I think she really grew a lot on that show and was
very happy to have been involved in it. (Since this was a con about Earth
2, obviously she didn't elaborate too much on that topic.)
Let's see, I'm running out of comments. She sat on a stool on the stage
with a can of soda in her hand. If she'd popped the tab *before* she came
on stage she might have actually gotten a drink; there were times in the
talk when she looked at it as if she were considering opening it, but she
never did. If I remember correctly, it was a Diet something-or-other, but
she talked just fine for an hour or so without it! (The ConCom people
evidently realized how dry someone can get while talking for that long;
they did a good job of making sure the speakers had a glass of water or
something while on stage. I noticed that Jeff Deist, who spoke the next
day, made sure his soda was opened *before* he got on stage!)
