at what point does something become trauma? like when does something count as trauma vs just a bad experience?

I'm gonna share with you something that my last therapist told me. My therapist suggested many times that my family had emotionally abused me, or at least neglected me when I was growing up. And for a while I protested and protested, saying that things really weren't that bad and that I couldn't point to any specific events that were so terrible as to warrant being called either trauma or abuse.

And my therapist told me, in essence, "I can't tell you for certain what did or did not happen to you in the past. But imagine if you went into the emergency room with an arm that was fractured in a manner consistent with a physical assault. Your doctor couldn't prove that anybody specific had broken it, but they could tell just from looking at the break that all the signs of an attack were there. And it's the same thing with you. I can't prove for certain that any particular relative abused your or that your family mistreated you. But you have all of the indications of somebody who grew up in an environment that emotionally invalidated and neglected you."

I found that very helpful. I don't think we have to litigate whether an experience was bad enough for it to count as traumatic, or even identify what the root of a trauma response even was, all we can do is look at how we were affected and what scars and fracture lines are still on us.

I don't remember my childhood particularly well (though of course few of us do). my sister's memory is intensely alarmingly worse. I can't point to many things that happened to me as a kid that were really all that bad. I can't say that the intensest of my bad memories are the worst of what happened, or the singular capital-T Trauma that led to the trauma response, or if some of those memories more just like symbols of an overall pattern that I lived under and then mostly forgot. But I do know that I show all the response and behavior patterns of trauma and abuse. And that's enough to tell me I need help and deserve to live a different way than I did when I was young.
