funny story, my first steam username actually did have my deadname in it. I wanted to change it for obvious reasons, and bc i didnt want to lose my games by remaking the account. Unfortunately, steam doesnt have a build in option to change it

I decided to write to steam support about it. Wrote a short sincere email explaining that Im trans and why I want to change the name. Two days later they actually replied! told me to log out everywhere and turn off automatic log-in and wait - lo and behold, I no longer had the deadname in my username! So it can be changed, just requires asking steam support

Steam Support asked me not to share info about this story, bc they dont want too many people asking for this, but I believe people knowing would do more good than keeping this story secret.

Anita Sarkeesian, feminist who interpreted media under a feminist lens. She did a series about video games and she was the subject of targeted harassment. That was the start of gamergate

Minor correction, the start of gamergate was based around a different reporter, Zoe Quinn, but they were both absolutely violently threatened over their involvement in video game criticism and development. A hate campaign was started by Quinn's ex-boyfriend when he wrote a post falsely accusing them of dating video game journalists in order to receive positive reviews on their own game, Depression Quest, which led other bad actors to accuse all women in the industry (Zoe identified as female at the time) of perceived sexual immorality. Anita Sarkeesian's brilliant Youtube series Tropes vs Women in Video Games (which everyone should watch, right now) sparked a particular nerve for criticizing popular games of killing and/or victimizing any important female character (there is a CHILLING bit that borders on ludicrous where she describes the plots of a seemingly endless parades of games as "In [title], [male player character's] wife dies, and you then have to rescue [his] daughter."). That series did actually make a huge change in the industry, especially when touted by progressive legacy developers like Tim Schafer (Monkey Island, Psychonauts), who went on to expand hiring in his company to front women and minority voices, but the shift didn't really show for a long time and echoes of the sexism that plagues the industry at its core are still rampant.

Zoe Quinn also has a book called Crash Overdrive, which I feel should be required reading for literally anyone using the internet in any capacity, especially as more and more things get moved to online spaces, and especially for people who use the internet for their livelihoods. It's a fairly short read (I read the entire book in a single day, although I will note this was during and for grad school, so actual reading time may vary for normal, non-grad-student readers), and can be a bit depressing--Quinn details the years of harassment they received due to gamergate, it's not a pleasant read, but I do think it's an absolutely necessary book to understand what happened and why and how, and Quinn has a surprisingly resilient sense of resolve come the end of the book, which details all the safety measures someone can and should take with their online activity.

If you can't get out to your local library to borrow the book, you can also find it here on the Internet Archive (though it looks like the lending is limited? it doesn't appear to be an open text at least, so a library might be your best bet if you can't purchase the book). Of all the books I was required to buy and read for college classes, this is probably the most important and impactful, and it's the only one I'd strongly encourage everyone to read for themselves.

Alright, so I'm condensing the previous donation post into this so it's more manageable:

I'm Alexis, local nerdy Miku-loving autistic trans girl trying her best to survive in a world that REALLY fucking hates giving me the tools I need to do that.

I just lost my job. Right now I'm doing what I can to stabilize things, but this came at a bad time where my rent is getting jacked up by 20%, and I've got a lot of outstanding medical bills due to a really stupid incident a few months back. Right now, my primary focus is dealing with the medical bills and making sure I'll have enough to be good through the next few months while I search for a new job and do what I can to get some income through other sources. It'll also just help me work on downsizing, finding roommates and getting me and my cat into a smaller and more manageable space.

i am scraping together thoughts for a post. is it just me or does Hometown in deltarune seem like. weirdly sinister? or not sinister just... creepy? not the normal npc, not onion san or the librarby, literally the town itself and everyone in it, possessing of a vague sense of... wrongness? like *something's* not right here but i cannot tell what it is?

or, am i hallucinating that? let me know your thoughts. i am trying to build a thesis about asgore and trying to figure out why the game keeps positioning him as sort of *threatening*, like the town is afraid of him, not just that he's an embarrassing social pariah.

to me hometown feels very twin peaks/lake mungo, but i can't quite put my finger on why and if i'm just hallucinating it or not.

The construction of the town is really weird. It's surrounded by trees in every direction. There is a road, but only 2 people have cars. The only grocery store in town is implied to only popping up recently. It has this weird sugary vibe of "yeah nothing bad ever happens in this town". The graveyard has literally only 4 graves? The school implies the existence of little kids, but you never really see anyone younger than the protagonists. Despite how small the town is, no one really reacts to the fact that people start disappearing. It's eerie.

i think if i ever continue working on my story-based game thing i'll borrow Undertale's fun value concept

the entire point of the game will be that it's not meant for completionists, and everyone's experience will be a bit different due to different choices and such

so if i randomise some side aspects i can further enhance that, and make it more annoying to 100% because you'll be relying on RNG

as i mentioned in a reply, i think the best way might be to ship every variation ships as a patch file, and the chosen one gets applied and all other deleted on first launch sadly that'll re-apply on redownload, you'd need to do some typically DRM-ass bullshittery to tie it to like, hardware or something

i know that undertale tries to prevent going around for example deleting fully some save information by having fake save files in multiple locations and hiding the true save files deep in the pc, so that's one way to do it, but it would not be perfect...

combining the deleting process with reading some of the hardware data to determine what gets deleted could be the way to go, although i assume there is no perfect way to solve this conundrum
