i rewatched this nearly a week ago and it has taken me this long to write anything because i feel like my emotions could never be properly translated. this isn’t as well written as my thunderbolts one but I DONT CARE!!!! i just want to get my thoughts out here because i love this movie. okay thank you. watching iron man next!!
tldr ; im not normal about steve rogers.
this is my third time watching this movie and it gets better every. single. time. to say i love steve rogers is possibly one of the biggest understatements ever. out of every movie that he’s in, i feel like the first avenger depicts him the best and it’s the reason why i love him as much as i do. the way he’s depicted in this movie, the steve rogers we get to know and love is also the reason why i absolutely HATE his endgame ending. but i’ll get to that when i rewatch it (which im absolutely dreading btw)
one of many things i love about this movie is the time period and overall aesthetic of the film. now!!! that is not me saying war and nazis are aesthetic!!!!! they are not!!!!!!!!! that is not what i’m saying in the slightest!!!! but the way it’s shown, the fight scenes, the scenery, the camp set ups, i love it all. it’s oddly nostalgic to me because of some shows and movies i grew up on. the costumes are some of my absolute favorites, especially steve’s military outfit (after the initial hydra base retrieval), bucky’s howling commandos blue jacket, and peggy’s infamous red dress. they’re all just so well done and UGH!!! I LOVE THEM!!!!! they are timeless i fear.
now, more about steve rogers, of course. i wish his mom sarah was shown, or even talked about at all, especially because she is the reason he is the way he is. he’s selfless. a good man. dr erskine says “the serum amplifies everything that is insane. good becomes great, bad becomes worse.” and i just love seeing steve turn into an even bigger, better version of who he was before. him looking down at himself for the first time after the serum and really taking in how much he had changed? ugh. love. i also cannot even imagine how jarring that must have been for him.
i also love how we see dr. erskine’s statement proven, not only with johann schmidt, but later in the mcu with john walker. i hate that man. sorry not sorry.
a couple of my favorite moments / ones that stuck out :
- the grenade. steve wrapping his small, weak body around the grenade without hesitation because he didn’t know it was fake. he was willing to get himself blown up if it meant his teammates would be saved - even if they hadn’t been the kindest to him. i cry every time i can’t even lie guys.
- seeing steve use different items as a shield before he gets his official one. the trashcan lid in the very beginning and then the car door in the chase scene after he gets the serum. then his costume shield and later his iconic vibranium shield, of course.
- steve learning that the serum means he can’t get drunk. because he tried to drink himself stupid after bucky’s “death”. UGH.
- the fact that at the end of the movie he was so determined to go down with the plane. peggy says she can grab howard stark and he would most likely have been able to figure out a solution for steve to get out of there alive. yet he insists against it. he chooses to go down with the plane and fully expects to die. only he doesn’t.
other thoughts :
i really wish we saw more of the howling commandos!!! we see so little of them but they seem like such a fun group. i wish we saw more of their dynamic while everyone was still around, i think they could’ve been really great.
i just love steve rogers guys!!! i love him so so much. i wish i could write out all my thoughts about his character but there’s just so many and no words can do them justice. me when i understand the complexities of a character i love but also find them extremely attractive #ethicallygooningtosteverogers.
which speaking of, the fact that i’ve seen people say that steve would be maga makes me actually fucking LIVID. did we watch the same movie?? are we talking about the same character? just because he has “america” in his title doesn’t mean he’s one of those!!! he’s the opposite in fact!!! he chose to fight for his country in a time of need, he wanted to so so bad!! he wanted to be someone, to have an impact! he literally willingly fought nazis guys. not to mention he is the son of irish immigrants. before the serum he was chronically ill and we know he had quite a bit of medical debt wracked up. in later movies he actively goes AGAINST the government. he’s also the victim of american war propaganda - which is literally how he got the “captain america” title in the first place. y’all piss me the fuck off actually 😒. i do NOT take steve rogers slander unless it’s endgame steve. let’s all point and laugh at him.
also, if it wasn’t obvious already i did in fact rate this movie five stars, thank yeww!
