The final exhibition

It was good to display our work on the final exhibition night and see what people thought about our work. It was interesting to see how people reacted to our models, to see what they were drawn to first.

On the Friday when Brentwood came to look at our work it was quite nerve wracking to see what they would think of our final outcomes. However, I was very pleased with what Bilal said about our project and final model. He noticed how we had taken their advice on board and simplified our model and he said he could visualise it.

It was also interesting to look at everyone else work on our course and all the other courses such as textiles and fashion as well!

Over all I am pleased with out final outcome and I think out idea works well for the rooftop and has a our concept would work well for the users.

Our space

We used boxes to create podiums for our models to be placed on in the middle. the light from the window shined onto the model creating light and shadows. We then placed paintings around the models this showed how we would use colours of natural gradients on the structure and around the rooftop. To the side of our work we had a banner explaining our design concept and showing how it will work.

Setting up the exhibition

We chose a space by the window which was quite small but just enough for us to display our work. firstly we decided to take up the carpet and then painted our section white. This worked well when the whole carpet got taken up as the white made our section stand out more. We then painted the walls and beam and covered the radiator at the back with cardboard as his was the theme running through the exhibition.

‘Geo’- stands for the geometric shapes that are used to create the structure.

‘Scope’- the users have the scope to do what they want within the space.

The symbol is made up of triangles which represent how our structure looks, and green is used to represent how the space is suppose to be natural and ‘surround you by the elements’.

How is the structure put together?

MITREJOINT

Rivets are used to clamp two panels to- gether at an angle. A cover panel it used to protect the material from where the pan- els have been joined. and clamp the mi- tre joint together.

Section plan of how the space will be used. Seating areas for users to sit and have meetings/work/relax, moveable furniture so space can be versatile for events and different activities.

The final model

The final structure we have created is made up of much bigger panels of material. We took on the criticism Brentwood gave to us and simplified the structure quite a lot. I think this makes it much more sophisticated but still eye catching and a focus point for the rooftop. Using bigger panels means that where the mirror is concerned, the view points it creates are much bigger, and therefor take in much more of the surroundings. The paintings are also much bigger which means there is more colour to the structure, making the rooftop even brighter which is what we aimed to do in the first place.

MAKING THE FINAL MODEL

To make the final model we cut all the shapes out by hand. We then used the model I had made on Sketchup to work out where each piece went and how it fit. We had to sand each edge to create the right angles to fit correctly with one another. Although this took hours of working out, we got there in the end and made a model that looked like the model on the computer.

MAKING THE FINAL STRUCTURE

To make the final structure I used Sketchup to create a template and scale. I tried doing this by hand but it proved very difficult because of the angles of the shapes, and so I created the whole thing on Sketchup which we then used to copy the lines with a compass onto the materials we were using to create the exact same shapes so it would all fit together to create the same 3D model.

Presentation to Bruntwood

This was our second presentation to Brentwood. From the first we had developed the idea and explained it in much more detail.

the model we had made showed the idea we were proposing, however Bruntwood told us we need to simplify this structure a lot more to make it practical within a real life environment and also make this bigger for the activities it would be used for. After hearing this i could completely agree with what they were saying.

Bruntwood did like the original model we had showed, they liked the way the materials worked together, particularly the mirror and colours (which was positive as these materials/designs were the main part of our idea) so it was just a case of needing to sit down and think about how we can make a structure more suitable but still with the same effect.

This was the result of the structure with the shapes we had cut out using the laser cutter.

The idea of the structure was to incorporate the different materials together to create something which would be a focus point on the rooftop.

The structure is purposely very angular this is so its would capture different view points from around the rooftop. The idea is that the users of the rooftop would be able to see different parts of the view in areas that they wouldn't usually be able to. It would also be interesting to try and guess which part of the view they were looking at.

Using the shapes we cut out on the laser cutter we started putting together small structures, Keanu painted some of the pannels to show how the colour would be incorporated in real life. 

Here we put the structure within its environment to see how it reflects and blends into its surroundings.

FIRST MODEL We then wanted to create a structure out of individual shapes to see what results we could get experimenting with this. We used the laser cutter to cut out geometric shapes(triangles, parallelograms, squares, rectangles) on mirrored acrylic, clear acrylic and ply wood, which we could then put together to see how the materials would work with each other.

Me and Luke started using card to experiment with geometric shaped structures. We were looking at what shapes we could make using the geometric shapes and the shadows and gradients this would create.
