To go more in depth into this years Unit X (now it’s finally over) today im going to be posting image sets which show each step of the process. This first image set is from our site visit investigating the space that we could work with; the photos shown here have been taken within the red rectangle on the plan image. 

We decided to design for this part of the building (bike shed and event space) because we realised we could make the most significant difference with the smallest changes such as taking down dividing walls to improve wayfinding but more on that in a later photoset.

The final exhibition

It was good to display our work on the final exhibition night and see what people thought about our work. It was interesting to see how people reacted to our models, to see what they were drawn to first.

On the Friday when Brentwood came to look at our work it was quite nerve wracking to see what they would think of our final outcomes. However, I was very pleased with what Bilal said about our project and final model. He noticed how we had taken their advice on board and simplified our model and he said he could visualise it.

It was also interesting to look at everyone else work on our course and all the other courses such as textiles and fashion as well!

Over all I am pleased with out final outcome and I think out idea works well for the rooftop and has a our concept would work well for the users.

Our space

We used boxes to create podiums for our models to be placed on in the middle. the light from the window shined onto the model creating light and shadows. We then placed paintings around the models this showed how we would use colours of natural gradients on the structure and around the rooftop. To the side of our work we had a banner explaining our design concept and showing how it will work.

Setting up the exhibition

We chose a space by the window which was quite small but just enough for us to display our work. firstly we decided to take up the carpet and then painted our section white. This worked well when the whole carpet got taken up as the white made our section stand out more. We then painted the walls and beam and covered the radiator at the back with cardboard as his was the theme running through the exhibition.

‘Geo’- stands for the geometric shapes that are used to create the structure.

‘Scope’- the users have the scope to do what they want within the space.

The symbol is made up of triangles which represent how our structure looks, and green is used to represent how the space is suppose to be natural and ‘surround you by the elements’.

How is the structure put together?

MITREJOINT

Rivets are used to clamp two panels to- gether at an angle. A cover panel it used to protect the material from where the pan- els have been joined. and clamp the mi- tre joint together.
