«THE INTRIGUED READER BECOMES A WRITER AND THEN A READER ONCE MORE.»
Hello, dear friend, and welcome to A Day At Once!
A Day at Once was born out of the desire to create a growing narrative with a bunch of authors and contributors.
Every day (or in a consistent posting rhythm proportionate to the amount of contributors) a different person will be adding their contribution to it. It provokes the otherwise sedentary position of a reader, it reaches out to them to include their own twist in the conflict and make them the novelist for a little while. The goal is: 365 days - 365 contributors.
Wait, wait, so tons of people will create content for this? How will this work?
It may seem a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it should go pretty smoothly! At the beginning of each month, a calendar sheet will be made public, in which the participants can claim a day to post their work!
That, my friend, is why you’re here! Whether you’re a writer, poet, artist, beta, other, or a mere spectator and fan of great content, you have a part to play in this story. You’re free to customize your entry as you see fit. A diary is something personal and you don’t always feel like writing; you can doodle a resume of your day, or sum it up in a poem, or a few photographs! You’re free to create whatever you wish, so long as it follows the general line of narrative of the previous entries! It goes without saying that the content has to be 100% original and created by YOU.
This sounds SWEET! How do I begin?!
Thank you for your excitement! First of all, finish reading this post and then fill out this application form. There will be no selection process but this is just a formality so we can easily keep track of the participants!
From then on, you’ll be given access to the Discord server, and all you have to do is to claim a day for the current month on the proper channel! When the day for your submission comes, we expect you to have caught up on previous entries and have yours ready as soon as possible!
Can I claim more than one day a month?
That depends on how much the group grows! If we’re thirty at some point, that would be perfect, since we can coordinate between ourselves, but if we grow to be sixty or more, we have to make room for everybody, and then you will only be able to claim a day every two months! You cannot submit content for two days in a row.
What if I need to drop/change my day?
Changing your day is pretty easy so long as your day isn’t “tomorrow” or worse, “today”. But life gets in the way and things happen - trust me, I know - and for those cases we’ll have a pinch hitter ready to cover for you! If no one’s available, one of your dearest mods will step in, and if no mod is available, then our character simply went to sleep without updating their diary! Any way, the moment you begin to realize you won’t have the availability to contribute on your assigned day, let a mod know as soon as possible!
Lol, so what if I kill off the character when my turn comes???
First of all: rude. Second of all, there will, of course, be some restrictions as to what you can and cannot do in your entry.
- No (main) character death;
- You can’t ignore the plot points that have been dropped in previous entries (if the main character is a woman, you can’t change the gender, if they’re a Gemini you can’t have their birthday in January, if they’re twenty-years-old, the only way to make them ten-years-old again is to describe a memory for instance, and so on);
- You should know that the storyline should be logical; if it’s turning out to be a story about cowboys, you wouldn’t include aliens, you know?
Are there any minimum requirements for our submissions?
For writers: At least 100 words;
For artists: Minimum one sketch (or a full piece to your standards);
For poets: Two stanzas minimum if couplets or tercets, one stanza minimum if quatrains or so on;
For others: Since this is a rather subjective area to set your creativity loose, the minimum requirement is something that could fill up a page!
