Kaiyō was born into the grungy underbelly of Republic city; becoming the first Granddaughter of the known Triple Threat leader Viper and the sole heir to the Triple Threat organization. Her father, “Shade” the current leader of the triple threats fell in love with a woman of the southern water tribe by the name of Kota during a routine visit to trade fur and other goods in the port market. Shortly after their encounter, Kota returned home to the Southern water tribe, leaving Shade to handle his business in Republic city, though they never lost touch with one another. Nine months later, Kota gave birth to Kaiyō.
Kaiyō remained in the southern water tribe with her mother far from her father’s influence. Though Shade kept very close tabs on his daughter that came with a yearly visit during festival times. By 10 Kaiyō already showed signs of her water bending abilities. She also had a knack for getting into trouble, causing havoc wherever she decided to play a prank on someone. Kota began putting Kaiyō through training that the southern tribe as well as the white lotus had to offer in hopes to keep Kaiyō on the right path
By 15 she had already mastered many healing and combat skills, making her a fierce warrior amongst her people. Shade of course saw this as an opportunity to mold his heir to lead the Triple Threats. Shade forcefully took Kaiyō from her mother, convincing her to come back to the city to set herself up at the International Academy for Bending to continue her mastery of water bending. Upon her arrival Shade told his daughter of her family’s legacy and what she would come to do when she was ready for succession. To this day Kaiyō is still unsure if she will honor her father’s wishes and succeed him.
Kaiyō is very shut out from the world. Though loved greatly by her mother and her people there was always an underlining feeling that she never belonged, this feeling was much stronger when her father came into town. So she turned herself away from all of that and delve deep into her training, burying her strong emotions deep into the corners of her heart until she explodes (Which happens every now and again.) This caused her to have very little friends because she had difficulties connecting with others. Despite that Kaiyō can talk her way out of anything, she has a air of mischievous charm and is known to play very discrete pranks on the student body, only to leave the question of why. But nevertheless it has made her very lonely, even more as her father is beginning to push her to take her rightful place in the Triple Threats, which she is still unsure if that is really what she wants.

Being the daughter of Notorious criminal does mark high in Kaiyō books of secrets. Feeling that the student body and instructors will treat her differently if this fact became common knowledge, Kaiyō keeps her personal life a mystery including changing her last name to Hikage, Though it has become increasingly difficult to hide this secret with her father’s aggressive approach to claim Kaiyō as his successor.
