Agustin was used to having office hours at the Board office alone, so it was a pleasant surprise when he walked in and Drakken was in as well. He...was an odd man. But he was Isa's friend and a frequent guest at Casita, so he could overlook that.
"Afternoon," he said in greeting, sitting down at his desk so see a new stack of petitions. "People have been busy, I see."
Isabela wasn't liking this new trend either, but Agustin kept sneaking it by her. Which was probably her fault. She wasn't around as much as she should be. Her eldest daughter duties were slacking. There was a piece of her that felt guilty about that.
Another part of her liked sleeping at Copper's too much. Even if they were in separate rooms. She liked the idea of his breathing on the other side of the wall.
Before she could chide her father about his habits, he distracted her by asking about Copper. She couldn't help but smile.
"Good! I invited him over to watch the match with us," she mentioned. "He'll be at work until much later. I hope that is alright?"
World Cup time in the Madrigal household was very sacred and it was going to be a late night.
He wasn't sure why she was asking if it was alright-- Copper was basically family already, he could walk into Casita unannounced if he wanted! He liked Copper. Wouldn't have said yes to him proposing to his daughter if he didn't just adore him.
"He's welcome any time any day, you know that," Agustin said, finally closing his laptop. "Of course he can come. I like Copper a lot!"
"Oh, I'm sure. My Mother is similar - not a kitchen witch, but- she has a tendency to loudly complain about not being offered help, but the moment she is, she takes it as an insult," he smiled.
What he wouldn't give for one of his mother's dinners now. The thought came, curiously, as quickly as Basil compartmentalised it.
It was - he satisfied himself with thinking - a shame there was not a proper Indian restaurant closer than NTO.
"But I think she prefers control of her domain. And we're all the better off for not meddling and ruining things," he added with a small grin.
"Right, right, that's her! I swear, I'm not a chauvinist who expects my wife to do all the 'women's work,' I have three daughters and actively tried to raise them to not settle for that kind of man." Agustin said. "It's just she gets scary if I mess up in the kitchen."
"Ugh, again?" Isabela said as she took a large bite of toast.
It was still warm. The butter had melted perfectly. She closed her eyes to enjoy it for a moment before flickering her gaze open again.
"Are you really working? It's the World Cup finale, Papa! You can't be working. Even Copper isn't working this evening." It was going to be a late match, because of the time difference, but that didn't matter to any of them! It was important to stay up and watch.
Even if the countries were Argentina and Spain. If she had to root for anyone, she supposed she would be supporting her South American brethren, but she wasn't overly enthused about it. Either way, it was bound to be a good game.
"Holaaaa, Papa!" Isabela sing-songed as she came in through Casita's door and saw her father sitting at the table, reading something. She came up behind him and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, giving him a squeeze and a kiss on the cheek.
She'd spent the night at Copper's last night, but she was home today to watch the World Cup game! Isabela tended to still not spend many nights at Copper's. Usually using the excuse that he'd had a weird shift and they hadn't seen each other in a few days when she did. Which usually wasn't even much of a lie!
The whole thing just made her self conscious.
She reached out to take a piece of his toast of his breakfast plate, then sat down next to him and started spreading butter and jam on it.
"It seems I've missed breakfast." She took a bite of the toast.
"Ah, I've heard a lot but never had a good excuse to go in," Basil smiled politely. That and he didn't fancy spending that much on food - not if he was footing the bill for it himself. But interesting that the corporation would spend so much... was that for all of its employees, or only those of a certain level, Basil couldn't help but wonder.
And was his wife's cooking truly that good, or was he merely a loyal man?
"You must be lucky then, a home-cooked meal almost every night," Basil smiled, hoping he might be able to prompt the man into saying more.
Eh, he didn't love the implication there, that he perhaps expected home cooked meals every day. It's just the way it was.
"I mean, my wife is a kitchen witch, it'd be impossible for her to not be good at it." Agustin said. "I help when she lets me, or one of our daughters, but she kind of doesn't like anybody in her way."
Phoebe glanced at each flier as it was pointed out, contemplating them all. There was so much to do in Swynlake. But book club sounded boring, dinner club exciting but her own skill was definitely not in the kitchen. She didn't think she needed a support group but-- it could be interesting. She wondered what sort of Magicks were there.
"Runnin' club..." she hummed as her gaze lingered on the flier before she turned towards the man. He looked like he belonged there. All business casual and such. "D'you know if they have a hiking club or something like that? Runnin' is fun and all but I like to explore the great outdoors at a much more leisurely pace."
"Oh, yeah, one of my daughters does hiking club I think." Agustin said. "They go on hikes through the trails in the forest. There's also camping groups if you're into camping."
He gestured to the flyers.
"Lots of ways to get involved and meet people around here."
"Oh, I heard about that!" Isabela said, eyes widening.
Being chronically online for her work plus that work taking place in Magick activism spheres meant that she always had her finger on the pulse of what was going on. And often, gave her opinion. Or, at least, posted things to her stories.
"I didn't realize that InterPride was getting involved. I suppose it makes sense. Of course everyone just went after the Bluecaps, like it was their fault the mine collapsed when they'd been complaining about the conditions for years." She rolled her eyes and huffed.
"I'm sorry it's keeping you up." She put a hand on his shoulder, slipping it around to rub his back gently.
Toby, reluctantly, obeyed his master, although his big brown eyes were fixed adoringly on the box in this strange man's hand as his tail brushed over the pavement wagging back and forth.
Basil caught up, and gave him a small pat. "Ahhhh, steak would explain it," he sighed in mild relief that it was something so easily explicable as that. Of course the dog would have taken an interest in that.
"Expensive tastes," he joked, nodding at the dog with a small grin. "Did you go somewhere locally for the dinner? It obviously meets his seal of approval."
"Oh, just to Gusteau's. InterPride isn't cheap about company dinners." Agustin said. "Thankfully. I can only take so many pizza parties. I rarely eat out anyway-- my wife is just too good of a cook, I compare everything to her cooking."
Swynlake was so different from home. There weren't any close friends or family members just a stone's throw away. The forest was different. The town was different. But it wasn't all bad. It was actually fresh and exciting. It made Phoebe remember just how much she had enjoyed getting to go new places with the band.
And that thought put a slight damper on things.
But that was why she was here! Not to get the band back together but to somehow get her brothers to stop being absolute idiots. She just... needed to talk to them first. Which she would! They were the big ticket items on her to do list.
She just... wanted to explore a bit first. She wasn't sure how long she'd be in Swynlake so she wanted to get the most out of it for as long as she could.
Peering at the communication board at Town Hall, she hummed as she took in everything that seemed to be going on. "How in the hell d'you pick just one thing to do?" She mused out loud. "Got any recommendations?"
"I guess that depends what you're into," Agustin said as he was on his way into the Board office. "Book club if you read. Dinner club if you like to cook. Oh--"
He pointed to a flier.
"Running club if you're into that sort of thing. My daughter runs a magick support group. And it's Pride, there's all sorts of events during Pride."
Yes, she knew this about her Papi. After all, he had always given her a model for her own work ethic. Isabela liked having things to do (not necessarily that she was getting paid for, but she included charity work as work.) She also liked her free time. Being busy was good when she was stressed, but otherwise, she liked her beauty sleep and days for shopping and enjoying life.
And she had learned that from her Papi, who was one of the hardest working people she knew (which was saying a lot), but he had always had good boundaries. He always made time to spend with his family.
"I do. Is there something serious going on?" she asked.
"Just a bit of a project all of InterPride is looped in on," he said, yawning and reaching for the tea. "Something about a mine explosion and bluecaps, I don't fully understand, I just know it's given me more work and it's a little time-sensitive so it can't stay at the office."
He sighed wistfully, missing his job back in Avalor, working for the Ministry of Immigration and Refugee Affairs. He was not cut out for the corporate-adjacent life, he was very much meant for public service.
InterPride was a middle ground, a nonprofit that did do a lot of good, but grant-writing vs. what he used to do, very different things.
"Toby?!" Basil called, breaking into a light jog with a caustic sigh as he strained his eyes to try and spot where the dog had got to this time. "Oh come on buddy," he chastised, mostly to himself. He should have seen the warning signs, when Toby suddenly started sniffing and staring off into the distance like that. He'd got a scent of something. Exactly what, Basil would have to find him to know.
"There you are!" He cried, seeing the dog pawing at someone's leg rudely. "Toby! Sit! Stop that-" He ran over, slipping the leash back onto the dog's collar.
"I'm terribly sorry," he said, shaking his head as he looked up at the person apologetically. "He got a scent of something and then just was off-"
What had Toby caught the smell of, Basil wondered, as he looked up.
Agustin of course wasn't thrilled when a random dog came bounding over to him, but when the dog didn't jump on him and simply stood there looking at him, he relaxed. This, he can deal with.
He watched as the owner deftly put the leash back on and looked down at the to-go box in his hand.
"Ah, maybe smelled the leftover steak from my work dinner."
The coffee in front of him had been replaced with a freshly brewed cup of camomile tea. The sun had set and wouldn't release the light until the morning again.
She knew that Agustus was busy. Working in Town Hall, she heard snippets. Not only about going ons about town, but InterPride too.
Agustin blinked a few times before rubbing the sleep from his eyes and reaching for the tea.
"Yes, yes of course," he said. "I just couldn't leave all the work at the office today unfortunately."
He hated bringing work home. Even when he worked for the Avaloran government and did some of his work from home, he kept strict working hours. This was a rare occurrence and one that clearly didn't need to be regular.
Pride Playlist June Task: What Agustin Was Dancing To At Avaloran Gay Clubs in the Late 80s to the 90s
link
Agustin, who realized he liked men and women as a teenager, happened to fall in love with and marry Julieta pretty young, but he had a period of self-discovery and hanging out in Avalor City's gay clubs before he met her, and even after because A. still part of the community even in a straight-passing relationship and B. shaking ass is fun!
Here's some songs that would've been playing at the clubs at the time: featuring Spanish, Portuguese, French, and English.
Massive credit to this reddit thread for some old gay club songs
¿A quién le importa? - Alaska y Dinarama
Mi destino es el que yo decido
El que yo elijo para mí
¿A quién le importa lo que yo haga?
¿A quién le importa lo que yo diga?
Yo soy así, y así seguiré, nunca cambiare
When I looked up Spanish-language LGBTQ+ anthems, this song came up eeeevery time.
Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable
I feel like once Agustin learned English he was like "damn what a banger"
Girls & Boys - Blur
Girls who are boys who like boys to be girls
Who do boys like they're girls, who do girls like they're boys
Always should be someone you really love
Girls who are boys who like boys to be girls
Who do boys like they're girls, who do girls like they're boys
Always should be someone you really love
So a lot of songs are in English because it was hard to find a lot of international LGBTQ anthems especially ones from the 80s and 90s. But also I think it makes sense with how global English-language media is! This song came up a lot in researching gay club songs of the 90s
A Little Respect - Erasure
And if I should falter
Would you open you arms out to me?
We can make love not war
And live at peace with our hearts
I'm so in love with you
I'll be forever blue
What religion or reason
Could drive a man to forsake his lover?
A banger! Agustin has continued to listen to this song and it was a staple in the car for the girls growing up, they probably knew the words before they knew English properly.
Linha-vida - António Variações
Vou perguntar ao mais vidente
Se o meu futuro será sorridente
Vou consultar quem tem visão
Se ainda vale a pena fazer tensão
Quem é capaz de me indicar
Se eu hei de andar depressa ou devagar?
Quem é capaz de me tirar
Desta incerteza, se hei de rir ou chorar?
Avalor is primarily a Spanish-speaking country, with a significant Portuguese minority so Portuguese-language music has always been popular there too. Agustin speaks both fluently and natively as most people from Avalor City, the capital city, do. António Variações was a gay singer from Portugal in the 80s and his music is loved through the Lusophone LGBTQ+ community, so of course this belongs on here! This is another singer that Agustin's daughter absolutely know from the car lmao
It's A Sin - Pet Shop Boys
At school they taught me how to be
So pure in thought and word and deed
They didn't quite succeed
For everything I long to do
No matter when or where or who
Has one thing in common, too
It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a sin
It's a sin
Everything I've ever done
Everything I ever do
Every place I've ever been
Everywhere I'm going to
It's a sin
If this doesn't give raised-Catholic bisexual man in the 1980s and 90s idk what does.
Desátame - Mónica Naranjo
Desátame o apriétame más fuerte,
pero no quiero que me dejes así.
No pararé, me muero por tener
algo entre tú y yo:
algo contigo ¡ay, amor!
This was another song that came up when searching for Spanish-language gay club music!
Estou Além - António Variações
Quero quem, quem eu nunca vi
Porque eu só quero quem
Quem não conheci
Porque eu só quero quem
Quem eu nunca vi
Porque eu só quero quem
Quem não conheci
Porque eu só quero quem
Quem eu nunca vi
I could've put SO MANY of his songs on here, especially from this album. There's one more on this playlist too bc I couldn't NOT include it. I think Agustin's daughters probably know this whole album, whether or not their Portuguese is good, just because he's played it so often.
Go West - Pet Shop Boys
life is peaceful there
(Go west) in the open air
(Go west) where the skies are blue
(Go west) this is what we're gonna do
(Go west, this is what we're gonna do, go west)
This one came up on Reddit a lot, I can see why, it's very gay club musically, I love it
Laissez-moi danser - Dalida
Laissez-moi danser, laissez-moi
Laissez-moi danser chanter en liberté tout l'été
Laissez-moi danser [Monday], laissez-moi [Tuesday]
Aller jusqu'au bout du rêve
Avalor is very worldly, very cosmopolitan, so it's not uncommon for a danceable banger in a language other than Spanish, Portuguese, and English to get popular and this song did especially in gay clubs in Avalor. It's a French LGBTQ+ anthem according to my researching
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away, I've got to
Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
I will never pretend this song is cringe, it's a banger. Ofc it's on a playlist about 80s and 90s gay club music!
O Corpo é que Paga - António Variações
Quando a cabeça não se liberta
Das frustações, inibições
Toda essa força que te aperta
O corpo é que sofre
As privações, mutilações
Quando a cabeça está convencida
De que ela é a oitava maravilha
O corpo é que sofre
O corpo é que sofre
Deix'ó sofrer, deix'ó sofrer
Se isso te dá prazer
I think THIS is Agustin's favorite song by António Variações. It translate to "It's the Body Who Pays" click the link for the English lyrics, it's SO good. And danceable! This is a song that Agustin's daughter would 100% associate with him
Oh L'amour - Erasure
Oh, love of my heart
Why leave me alone?
I'm falling apart
No good on my own
Oh l'amour
Broke my heart
And now I'm aching for you
Mon amour
What's a boy in love
Supposed to do?
It's just a danceable banger y'all.
New York City Boy - Pet Shop Boys
New York City boy
You'll never have a bored day
'Cause you're a New York City Boy
Where Seventh Avenue meets Broadway
You can't tell me this isn't peak gay club.
Nada Personal - Soda Stereo
Ella no puede pensar, está aburrida
De tanto simular, cayó dormida
Busco en TV, algún mensaje entre líneas
Busco alguien que sacuda mi cabeza
¡Y no encuentro nada!
I wanted another Spanish-language song on here, and while this isn't really gay club specific, it's an absolute 80's banger and it would've made it on the playlist some nights because Soda Stereo out of Argentina was so popular in the 80s and 90s.
Smalltown Boy - Bronski Beat
Mother will never understand why you had to leave
But the answers you seek will never be found at home
The love that you need will never be found at home
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Another song that came up all the time when I was looking for songs!
Love To Hate You - Erasure
I like to read murder mystery
I like to know the killer isn't me
Love and hate what a beautiful combination
Sending shivers make me quiver
Feel it sliver up and down my spine
A Reddit user called this the gayest song to ever exist and I gotta admit it's a contender.
Agustin, as a general rule, did not like to bring work home with him. But considering the gravity of the mine collapse situation, he didn't have much of a choice but to be holes up at the breakfast nook with his laptop long after he got home from work.
Eventually though, his eyes gave up on him and he nodded off in front of his laptop, his coffee long since gone cold on the table.
He didn't even wake up to Isabela's footsteps, only stirring when he felt a hand on him.
Copper felt like he couldn't breathe. In the few short moments between him saying it and Agustin responding, it felt as if all the air had been sucked out of the room. Copper liked to think he was generally pretty calm and collected, but the suffocating feeling sent him spiralling. What if they said no? Isabela would never marry him if her parents said no, he was sure of it. Then what would he do?
It took another beat, after Agustin had finished speaking, for his words to sink in. Finally Copper felt like he could breath again, like the entire room had been set back to rights. He smiled, small at first but steadily growing wider, his heart beating wildly.
"Thank you." He said, the same sincerity colouring his tone. "Really, thank you. I-- It means a lot to me. I didn't want to - I couldn't have done it, without speaking to you both first. I know how much Isabela loves you both, and--" Copper took another steadying breath. "Thank you."
Agustin still wasn't so sure. But the way he saw it, Copper was going to do it anyway, regardless of what he said. And he didn't have any good reason to say no. All of his reasons were based in anxiety, or in his personal opinion that they should date longer -- maybe move in together, Agustin had a modern opinion on dating that not all of his relatives shared, both his in-laws and his natal family.
There were other concerns he had, but they were all things he really had no say in. So he'd said yes.
At least, unlike Clayton, Copper was asking.
"I certainly hope you don't make me regret it." Agustin said firmly.
Copper did go to the living room, giving Agustin a friendly smile - as friendly as he could manage, given how nervous he felt - as he passed. At first he sat on the edge of the sofa, and then he stood, and then he paced for a bit before sitting back down again. He felt restless, and he knew exactly why, except...
Well, why was he worrying? As far as he knew, he got along well with Isabela's parents. With her entire family, in fact. He'd spent pretty much every holiday with them since he and Isabela had officially gotten together, had spent her birthday with them, and no one had ever batted an eyelid. So why was he so nervous about getting Agustin and Julieta's approval?
Copper knew why. Because he knew Isabela, and he was pretty sure that if they didn't have her parents' blessing, this whole thing would be over before it even started.
He was in mid-motion, standing up again, when Agustin returned with Julieta.
"Yes!" Copper nodded emphatically. He didn't want to worry them. "Yes, everything's fine, it's just-- I have something important that I wanted to talk to you, both of you, about. It's..." He took a breath. He needed to just get it out there. "I want to propose. To Isabela. And I-- I want to make sure I have your blessing before I do."
No, because nobody would ever be good enough for his baby.
No, because of what happened last time.
No, because he still thought they should date a little longer.
But as he looked at Copper, his sincerity on his face, worn on his sleeve, Agustin could find no good reason to say no. Julieta seemed to be in agreement, or rather, to defer to him because she looked at him waiting for him to answer.
"I think...I think that's a wonderful idea," he said, though he wasn't so sure. "Yes, of course you may ask her to marry you."
