Yknow I kept wondering why the reception of double helix was so different from what I expected.
Because Technically I dropped this babygirl the moment I heard it was another adaptation of a round trip to love. (I have watched the movie and read some parts of the novel to know it was a red flag that I could not personally handle)
Also because I can't enjoy BL, when they are not equally down bad for each other. If it's just one person going insane I get annoyed. But picked it back up because of the intense Lu Feng defense and Yi Chen hate, cause curiosity.
I was already annoyed by Lu Feng in their university before the expose scene where he threw a tantrum over Yi Chen and sex, saying Yi Chen didn't like him back enough. Which honestly is not the type of manipulative I like. And then the brother pissed me off especially after he got the boyfriend.... Like don't play in my face, you lied to your older brother and still refuse to tell that Lu Feng messaged and all that?
Like nope, trying to force the man who loves you to date your brother is not redemption either, it's just you sacrificing someone else by pushing them in a situation neither of them asked for, instead of taking accountability.
And while people could see that. I did wonder why people can't see it for Lu Feng?
Lu Feng choosing Yi Chen over his own parents and family makes sense, when we know from the beginning he doesn't fuck with them. It's not that big of a sacrifice, he hated his father, he straight up does not gaf about his sister either, yknow the only girl who was by his side, his family, who chose him over and over again, even after Lu Feng essentially killed their father. (Homophobes dying because of their homophobia is always funny to me.)!
And I get it. I really do. It seems like a big sacrifice.... But it was the equivalent of Yichen not doing anything to help Lu Feng or telling his brother the truth, to help them because he doesn't care about Lu Feng, he hated him, so he has to put no effort into watching that relationship burn.
They are so similar it hurts my brain and pisses me off, for both of them, it's about what they feel is right. Yi Chen should do what they think would make him happy, instead of yknow, what makes him happy.
It's why despite loving him, they struggle to make him happy.
Which brings me to the main thought again, why don't the people see Lu Feng's selfishness when they can clearly see Yichen.
And the answer seems to boil down to, Yi Chen actually does seem much happier when he's with Lu Feng.
He smiles more, he makes promises that indicate he would stay with Lu Feng for a long time, if outside factors would stop interfering.
He daydreams about it.
He can't move on from him, even when he is given the space...
Yi Chen genuinely does want to be with him. (Which I now think about is not that surprising, considering how everyone else in his life is also super selfish and rarely takes his feelings into account, Lu Feng is similar but at least he tells him he loves and appreciates Yi Chen every day)
Also Yi Chen ices out in distress, his face doesn't crumple or break down easily, he just stops emoting. Whether it's with friends or family, his eyes dull but he's never kicking or screaming, completely internalising the pain but Lu Feng throws it all out in the open, so his pain is obvious to see.
Since Yi Chen doesn't seem miserable on the outside, it's easier to ignore his pain. Easier to forget that he's suffering too.
When the only proof of his happiness has been when he's with Lu Feng or day dreaming about being accepted with Lu Feng.
It begins to feel like, of course Lu Feng is the right choice.
He's surrounded by all those selfish people, why does he not just choose Lu Feng who keeps choosing him?
When in fact Lu Feng has been choosing himself too, it's about his feelings for Yi Chen, his love and suffering are at the forefront for him too.
Coming back and asking Yi Chen to immediately dump his gf? No hi hello how you been? Just get back with me.
Lu Feng is just as selfish as everyone around Yi Chen.
Which is why it is more annoying that Yi Chen hasn't learned to be more selfish too, and still caters to others.
Like omfg, everyone sucks here, why don't you fucking run away?
The answer is even more annoying, because he's used to it. The selfishness of others, being unable to take a stand for himself, seeking out the one person he knows will make the decision for him after being left behind by everyone else who pressured him into it.
I think the only character who did not annoy me in the show was Qinglong? Is that his name? The 2nd CP top, but he was also so boring, I could not care to remember his name.
The little brother is a new actor and already a pro at being annoying, like damn I wanted to beat that little shit up every time he opened his mouth.
Anyways, everyone is selfish, Yi Chen is a people pleaser who never grows out of it.
There's no way, this was going to end happy.
Of course there's people who watch the show specifically for the black flag content. I came into it for that too, but I also get annoyed easily so yeah.... Still loving it, but definitely annoyed too.
