Hi hello, I'm Bridgette but most online call me Arcane (and have before it was cool) - I'm a queer person from KY in their 30s who has three dogs and loves photography.

The main stars of the blog are: Evie, the oldest, a bully breed mutt from a local shelter. > Evie passed away May 10th, 2024 from cancer. Astaroth, a red merle Australian Shepherd from a local breeder. > Astaroth passed away May 21st, 2026. Pazuzu, a red tri Australian Shepherd from the same local breeder. Moxie, a bully breed mix puppy from the local shelter, welcomed home late May 2024.

We also have cats, rodents, a jumping spider, a mantis, and a couple of crested geckos I may post from time to time.

My camera for the ~fancy~ photos is a Nikon D850. Primary lenses are an 85mm and a Sigma ART 35mm. Sometimes I upload pics from my iPhone as well but those are mostly just to get a glimpse into the cozy, domestic life we lead.

Asks and questions are always welcome re: photography or pet care. We are primarily a pet home, the most our dogs do is hiking with us. Me and my partner are both neurodivergent and mentally ill so the energy is low here at times. I sometimes go very long bursts without posting but we've been here since Evie was young and intend to stick around, even if it's just occasionally popping in!

I will try to make a better, more honorary post when I have the mental capacity, but I just wanted to update everyone.

We lost Astaroth. I’d had him the entire time I’ve ran this blog. Since he was 8 weeks old.

He’d just turned 10 in April, and since 10 is a cursed dog age for me apparently, he had some really complicated health issues arise. We tried so hard to get him the care he needed to be painfree and comfortable again, but he was in surgery when they found masses that complicated things even further, and raised his chances of the issues repeating. We opted to not continue and say goodbye given his age and how much pain he’d gone through already.

To say we are devastated is an understatement. I have felt sick for days, my partner keeps bursting into tears. We miss our forever puppy. Even if he has good company waiting for him on the other side, it just isn’t fair. We hoped for a better outcome.

I’ll make a better post later. With some of my favorite photography images of him throughout the years. We would have had him 10 years come June 8th. I’m really tired of not getting to celebrate that milestone Gotcha Day with my dogs. :’)

I'm hesitant to add this because times are tough for everyone, but we got about $4500 in the hole between diagnostics, an overnight hospital stay, procedures that we hoped would heighten the chances of success for the surgery only to get the bad news, the euthanasia and cremation, etc.

We've gotten some help, which I desperately appreciate. We've still got about $2500 sitting on my CareCredit card, which will still be a struggle to pay off even over 6 months. My partner and I just don't get paid enough, the cost of living keeps getting insane, etc. My partner had a car wreck and their vehicle was totaled and just had to finance another car right before this happened. Pazuzu also needs a skin growth removed and that had to be pushed to the backburner because Astaroth's issues were more urgent. If we could get a good chunk of that CareCredit bill paid off, we'd be able to get that taken care of (another $700 to start but that's way more manageable for us).

So... if anyone wants to toss us a $5 donation or something, it would be vastly appreciated. I know I'm not as active on this blog these days as I used to be, so I definitely understand if no one is comfortable with it, I'm just tossing it out there because you get zero % of the help that you don't ask for. Astaroth

April 10 2016 - May 21 2026

Astaroth wasn't an easy dog and that wasn't his fault, he was riddled with anxiety and had big feelings that he wanted to scream about, especially whenever we had guests. But he was my baby dog, my forever puppy. He always tried so hard for me. Just wanted to be loved and get butt-scritches. He loved to chew on Evie's ears growing up like his own security blanket, and after we lost her, he was the best big brother to Pazuzu and Moxie. He passed the torch well.

He was healthy until he wasn't. And that's the heartbreak of it all in the end. I wish we could have helped him. One of the most painful parts of this was that he was so brave, sitting in the waiting room for hours, we knew he was so confused and nervous but he was being so brave and so quiet. But I know he just wanted to come home. It devastates me that he never got to come home. Whenever we got back in the car and took him somewhere new and strange instead of returning to the house, he seemed even more confused. He wanted us to take him home. I wanted to take him home.

He was a little butterball of a floof when we got him. When we made a stop for coffee on the way home, he fell asleep in my friend's lap (she remained one of his all-time favorite humans). We all called him a demon potato. He had an abundance of nicknames in no time.

My first little puppy. Stayed a puppy. So many people didn't believe his age. He got complimented so much in those waiting rooms, so many people told him how pretty he was. He was the softest dog you'd ever meet -his fur was so silky smooth, our friends called him a cloud.

He was smart and capable, even if his nerves failed him a lot of the time. He was such a little show-off in front of the camera sometimes, too. There's been a pit in my stomach and a hole in my heart since he left us. I hope he's chewing on Evie's ears again, and running amok through the stars. 10 years is not enough time with any of them, and it feels so unfair. I feel robbed. It's so cruel that he wasn't even on this earth long enough to get gray. I'm going to miss him so much. The silence will be deafening to me now, because it's not an absence of sound, but an absence of him.

Rest in peace and run free, soft boy. My awful waffle. My Astawaff. My Asterpuff. Our anxiety son. Our sweet, gooey eyed boy who had the best puppy eyes and would unapologetically steal peoples' seats on the couch. You are so loved and will be so, so dearly missed.

Very glad I took him out for photos that day. I never would have anticipated it'd be the last photography session I'd ever get to do with him. But I'm glad I have some images of him in his double-digits, even if he barely got to live them.

Moxie loves him, he hates her, but she’s very warm so when he’s asleep he doesn’t mind her being close, sometimes even gravitates towards her lol. He’s 20 so he sleeps very heavy.

Hey y’all, I hate to ask for help like this, but Basil is at the vet after a severe attack from a loose dog during our morning walk.

Right now, the biggest concern is that he almost certainly has a fractured skull. Initial exam upon intake indicates that it appears to be a sinus cavity skull fracture rather than damage to the brain cavity itself, he wasn’t exhibiting neurological symptoms and was able to stand despite being in shock and the wounds on other parts of his body, responsive and mostly alert etc, so it’s possible that we got very, very, VERY lucky, but we will need to take him to a larger veterinary hospital once he’s stabilized here in town, since we’ll need to do a CT to get better imaging and determine if surgery is necessary. The other injuries are all pretty superficial (bruising, lacerations, damage to his ear, etc) in comparison to that.

This level of specialty care is very expensive and will push me past my emergency savings. If you’re in a position where you can chip in a few bucks towards his care, I would really, really appreciate it. Basil is one of those once-in-a-lifetime dogs. Within days of him being dropped off as a foster I knew that he was never gonna leave, he just fit in so well with my crew and I fell in love. He is so, so special to me, and I’d do anything for him including ask for help.

I should be hearing back from our vet soon with an updated quote and some referrals out to specialists & their quotes, and I’ll share those here ASAP.

An update for everyone, Basil is hospitalized overnight. X-ray findings confirmed the sinus cavity fracture, his ear is torn up, he has some lacerations on his back leg and the hip was dislocated but was able to be put back in place. I visited him for about an hour this evening and he’s a trooper 💔 tomorrow, if he continues to stabilize, he will go in for a CT which will help us determine if he’ll need surgery or not.
