Here’s to you, on Nurses Week

People talk all the time about how nurses are Superheroes

The media

Social media

Patients

Their families

I don’t feel like I’m a hero,

And I thinks that’s ok,

I say it for the reality of what I do each day:

I speed through a marathon shift that often feels like it will never end,

I clock in some days and wonder where all the time went,

All the excitement I once had in nursing school of becoming a nurse

Then I clock out some days,

Where I think this was an ordinary day - no one died on my watch, no admissions, no rushed discharges, no codes,

And I can breathe again in the ordinary way

Then, some days I find I crave the adrenaline of fast interventions, the heightened sense of chaos and urgency and high stakes it takes to save a life -

And I feel re-centered

But I am not a superhero

No specialty is superior to another,

At any given time, I have been humbled by this

I am simply doing what I am trained to do,

I am one piece of the extraordinary puzzle of integral caregivers working to either save a life, or gently let go of one.

For the rest of the world it’s a view of superheroes,

But for me it’s an ordinary day

You don’t have to be a super hero to stand out,

There’s meaning in being ordinary.
